Fatah official: Balfour Declaration caused loss of Palestinian self-determination and independence, Britain should not celebrate with Israeli PM

Regarding the hosting [on Feb. 6, 2017] of occupation [Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by the government of Britain for [the 100th anniversary] of the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration) (sic., while in Britain on an official visit, Netanyahu was invited to the celebrations that will take place later this year –Ed.), Fatah expressed its discontent over this step, which it described as a ‘saddening provocation.’ This is because through the Balfour Promise and its implementation, Britain caused our people to lose its right to self-definition and independence in its homeland. Nazzal said: ‘What would be more efficient for making justice and peace in the world as far as Britain is concerned would be for Britain to be a guarantor for stopping the historical injustice that was caused to many peoples who were harmed as a result of the history of Britain in the period of colonialism.’”
The EU-Israel Association Council was set to renew its annual meetings on Feb. 28, 2017, after a five-year hiatus. Following the ratification of the Regularization Law by the Israeli Parliament on Feb. 6, 2017, which validates and finalizes registration of land for Israelis in the West Bank, the EU postponed the meeting.
The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and is seen as the basis for later international commitments to establish the State of Israel.
