PA Minister of Justice in the wake of Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital: “Martyrs are the conscience of the people, the pioneers of the freedom struggle”
Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida - Jan. 9, 2018
Headline: “The Palestinian Martyrs' Day ceremony in Ramallah became a rally for Jerusalem”
“Great masses marked Palestinian Martyrs' (
Shahids'
) Day – with official participation and participation by the factions – in a central ceremony that was organized by the National Association of the Families of the Martyrs [of Palestine] at the Ramallah culture hall…
[PA] Minister of Justice Ali Abu Diyak noted in a speech on behalf of [PA] Prime Minister [Rami Hamdallah] that the marking of this great day falls at a time when the Palestinian cause is in a fateful and historic period, in which our people and its leadership are dealing with [US President Donald] Trump’s tyrannical declaration that attempts to steal from Jerusalem its Arabness and Palestinian national identity, and to declare it Israel’s capital.
Abu Diyak directed a blessing of appreciation and esteem to the Martyrs who have sacrificed themselves for Palestine from the British Mandate period, on to the Martyrs of the
Nakba
(i.e., “the catastrophe,” the Palestinian term for the establishment of the State of Israel) and aggression of 1967 (i.e., the Six Day War) from among the members of the Palestinian people and the precious nation, and ending with the Martyrs of the battles of Lebanon, the two Intifadas, the assassinations, and the ongoing acts of aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip…
Abu Diyak conveyed the blessings of [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas] and the prime minister to the families and relatives of the Martyrs who paved the path to freedom and independence with their blood and sacrifice, and sacrificed their souls for Palestine. He also said that these Martyrs are the conscience of the people, the pioneers of the freedom struggle, and the defenders of the national path
…
The minister of justice mentioned the cause of the Martyrs whose bodies are being held in the numbered cemeteries (i.e., Israeli cemeteries for terrorists and enemy soldiers), as the occupation is still holding 270 bodies of Martyrs in these cemeteries and committing the ugliest crime against humanity by sentencing them to imprisonment [even] after their deaths as Martyrs.”
US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel
- On Dec. 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and instructed the State Department to begin preparations to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump added that the final borders of Jerusalem will be determined during negotiations.
The Cemeteries for Enemy Casualties are two burial sites maintained by the Israeli army for burying the bodies of enemy soldiers as well as terrorists. They are fenced and well-marked. Graves have markers instead of gravestones. Burial is temporary, on the assumption that the bodies will eventually be returned to their countries of origin. No ceremony is held. The bodies are buried in numbered caskets after their identities are documented.
