Jerusalem under assault
Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.

Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
"Jerusalem is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine - the Jews have no right to it," declared senior PA religious official, Dr. Tayseer Al-Tamimi, PA Chief Justice of religious court. Accordingly, any Jewish life and development in Jerusalem is labeled as "Judaization." Jerusalem is presented as an exclusively Muslim and Christian city, with no regard to history or archeology, and even the existence of the Temple being denied.
PLO accuses Israel of “invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and attempts to impose the occupation’s falsified reality and falsify the history and culture of Jerusalem”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 5, 2016
Headline: “The [PLO] Executive Committee decided to immediately implement decisions of the [PLO] Central Council to limit the relations with the occupation”
“The PLO Executive Committee welcomed the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) decision to refuse attempts to falsify history and to emphasize the true and natural Arab Islamic character of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque (UNESCO referred to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Al-Buraq Wall in their decision, and mentioned their sanctity to the Muslims, ignoring the names “Temple Mount” and “Western Wall,” and the sanctity of these places to the Jews –Ed.). Likewise, the committee called on the international organization to act to end the daily violations of the holy sites, expressed by invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and attempts to impose the occupation’s falsified reality and falsify the history and culture of Jerusalem, the eternal capital of the Palestinian state and its people.”
Op-ed in PA daily denies Jewish history: “I challenge… daily to bring me one Jewish archeological remnant from Jerusalem, or to show us a rock from the alleged Temple”

Headline: “Those who pass between fleeting words”
Op-ed by Jihad Al-Khazen, originally published in the London-based Al-Hayat newspaper
“The terrorist [Israeli Prime Minister] Benjamin Netanyahu promises not to give up the Golan. I say to him (through a third party because I cannot speak with him) [parentheses in source] that Tel Aviv is not his. The Golan is part of Syria, and all of Israel is occupied Palestine… What I say is that the occupation of Palestine is an evil thing that will end with the return of the occupiers to the place from where they came. I do not expect that the justice will include putting the members of the Israeli government on trial as the Nazis were put on trial after the fall of the Nazis, but just that they will leave, as Mahmoud Darwish requested when he said to them that they ‘pass between fleeting words’ and that they should take their names and get out from on us. All of their news is a crime or lies. The Jewish holiday of Passover falls on the 22nd of this month, and it marks the anniversary of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. According to information I have received from two university professors, which was verified by my friend, the archeologist Zahi Hawass, this whole story is a biblical myth. I challenge them to bring me one archeological remnant from Egypt or Sinai, as I challenge them daily to bring me one Jewish archeological remnant from Jerusalem, or to show us a rock from the alleged Temple.”

PA bodies protest Israeli Ministry of Tourism maps of Jerusalem that use Jewish names for Jewish religious sites and not the Arabic names
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 6, 2016
Headline: "The presidential committee and the Foreign Ministry condemned the fact that Israel has forged tourist maps"
“The [PA’s] Higher Presidential Committee of Churches’ Affairs in Palestine and the [PA] Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the fact that the Israeli Ministry of Tourism has left important Islamic and Christian sites off the latest version of a guidance pamphlet, which includes a map of Jerusalem and is meant especially for foreign tourists… Likewise, the committee condemned the fact that the names of ancient sites in the Old City [of Jerusalem] have been changed in a way that serves the Israeli historical narrative, such as the use of 'Wailing Wall' instead of the Al-Buraq Wall, and 'Temple Mount' instead of the holy Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary."
Archaeologist on PA TV: Israel is "trying to enlist all the archaeological sites in Jerusalem in support of the alleged Jewish history in Jerusalem"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Apr. 3, 2016
Official PA TV program The Occupied Capital on Israel harming tourism in Jerusalem

Archeologist at the Israeli Arab Al-Aqsa Institute for Islamic Trusts and Heritage Abir Zayyad: "They are trying to enlist all of the archeological sites in Jerusalem in support of the alleged Jewish history in Jerusalem. We have a number of examples of this. The most conspicuous example is the city of Jebus, in the village of Silwan, where Jerusalem developed 10,000 years ago, becoming a real city 4,000 years ago. The occupation is always trying to present it to tourists as a city built by David (i.e., King David), or that David lived in, but David has no connection to the antiquities there, as the antiquities are completely Palestinian Arab."
PA Minister of Religious Affairs: The Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger from “Israeli plots” to destroy, divide, or replace it with the “alleged Temple”

Headline: "Ida'is: More than 109 attacks and violations against the holy sites during the months of January and February"
"[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is stated… ‘The occupation has turned the occupied city of Jerusalem into a military base through widespread and increased deployment of its forces around the holy sites, in various streets, and around the city, as part of a series of intensified Israeli measures.' Likewise, he said that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is in grave and immediate danger today, which is increasing from day to day, which necessitates the determination of a mechanism of action on the Islamic, Arab, and international level, to deal with the Israeli plots in order to save the [Al-Aqsa] Mosque from destruction, division, and the building of the alleged Temple."

"Division according to areas and times" refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to designate separate prayer times and areas of the site for Muslims and Jews. Israeli PM Netanyahu has stated on many occasions that the Israeli government has no intention of ‎changing the status quo on the Temple Mount.

Headline: "Mattour: The occupation's actions will not harm our resolve"
"Deputy Secretary of Fatah's Jerusalem branch Shadi Mattour emphasized that the occupation state's actions will not lessen the Palestinian people's determination to protect the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and in particular the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In an interview yesterday [Jan. 12, 2016] with Radio Mawtini, Mattour added: 'The Israeli aspirations regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque continue, due to its attempts to destroy it and establish the alleged Temple."
Fatah official: "When a state is established and we take Jerusalem, the Zionist idea which inspired their hearts will collapse and they will leave, defeated" because of "myth" that Jerusalem is the Promised Land
Source: Facebook page of Fatah Central ‎Committee Member Abbas Zaki, Jan. 4, 2016
Member of Fatah Central Committee, Abbas Zaki: "Yasser Arafat has been reborn and the crusade continues. The blood, the sweat, and the tears will be a minor matter when the hope for the return and the establishment of a [Palestinian] state with Jerusalem as its capital is realized. When a state is established and we take Jerusalem, the Zionist idea which inspired their hearts will collapse and they will leave, defeated, because they created the myth according to which Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria are The Promised Land, and they are Allah’s chosen people. They will not be Allah’s chosen people, Ursalim (i.e., infrequently used Arabic name for Jerusalem, parallel to Hebrew name) will be nothing but Al-Quds (i.e., more common Arabic name for Jerusalem), Samaria will be nothing but the Mountain of Fire (i.e., nickname for Nablus), and Hebron will be nothing but the capital of rage, until liberation.”

Fatah official: “The current Zionist strategy… is based on the effort to build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
Source: Al-Dustour (Jordan), Dec. 16, 2015
"Fatah Central Committee Member Abbas Zaki said that Jordan is considered the present refuge for all oppressed, and emphasized that Jordan's stability is a real strength for Palestine. During the mass rally in the [Jordanian town] Zarka at the compound for professional unions, organized two nights ago [Dec. 14, 2015] by the popular committee for the support of the popular uprising [in Palestine], to mark the anniversary of the Palestinian Stone Intifada (i.e., Palestinian wave of violence and terror against Israel, 1987-1993), he added that the current Jerusalem Intifada is the fruit of the renewed willpower in Palestine, and is an undirected intifada, arising as a result of the inability to coexist with the Zionist occupation… He noted that the Zionist entity carries out organized terror against the Palestinian people, as they are assembling Zionist organizations, like the Zionist Irgun and Haganah (i.e., Jewish defense forces in the pre-state period) gangs, which carry out terror and intimidate. He stated that the right of return of the Palestinian people who was exiled from its land will be guaranteed if Jerusalem is returned, and added that the liberation of Jerusalem can blow up the current Zionist strategy, which is based on the effort to build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque."
Op-ed in official PA daily: “Religious, historical, and even biblical facts deny any connection between the Jews and Jerusalem” or to “historic Palestine”

Headline: “Ziedan’s irrational teleology”
Op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, columnist for official PA daily
“[Egyptian author] Dr. Youssef Ziedan dropped a heavy bomb with his rational approach to the status of Jerusalem when he rejected its Arab identity, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the First Direction of Prayer and the third ‘Sanctuary’ , its Islamic value, and considered it a ‘myth’ with no connection to reality. He relied on the history of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, which was built by Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan (the 5th Umayyad caliph. –Ed.) in 65 AH, in other words after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, thus giving the Jews the right to Palestine...First, the religious, historical, and even biblical facts deny any connection between the Jews and Jerusalem. Anyone turning to Jewish historians and archaeologists will understand this truth, as some of them, such as Israel Finkelstein, Neil Asher Silberman (i.e., Israeli archeologists), and Shlomo Sand (i.e., a history professor at Tel Aviv University), have confirmed that there is no such connection. In addition, Israel is already in existence for seven long decades in historic Palestine, and its archeologists are searching for any evidence that will connect them to Jerusalem or the Palestinian land, but they have not found even a small piece of evidence to confirm the Zionist assumption. Second, a large number of Arab and foreign historians have confirmed that the locations noted in the bible have no connection to Palestine, and they are all to be found in Yemen and the Arabian Peninsula. Third, the fact that the [Al-Aqsa] Mosque was not built in its present form does not rule out its presence there in its original form and the fact that Caliph Abd Al-Malik Ibn Marwan built it here, where it stands until today, only reinforces the words of the Quran. Fourth, Dr. Youssef knows well that the Zionist narrative is a fundamentall
Op-ed in PA daily: Jerusalem was never the Hebrew name of a Jewish city, and the Hebrew language never existed

Headline: "The Blathering Intellectual"
Op-ed by Editor-in-Chief Mahmoud Abu Al-Hija
"Those who founded Jerusalem were the Jebusite and Canaanite Palestinians, and they inhabited it in the fifth millennium BC. First, it was called Jebus, and then 'Ur salem' after its Canaanite king, and 'Ur Salem' is a completely Arab name. After the Islamic conquest, it was renamed 'Aelia [Capitolina]' (Roman colony built on the ruins of Jerusalem in 136 AD following the Bar Kochba Revolt, conquered by the Persians in 614 AD –Ed.) and this name appeared in the Pact of Umar (i.e., pact signed between the Muslims and Christians of Syria after the Muslim conquest of 637). Later on, during the Abbasid period (i.e., third of the Islamic caliphates to succeed the Islamic Prophet Muhammad), it was called Bait Al-Maqdis, and this name appeared in the poems of Abu-Nuwas (i.e., classical Arabic poet born in the 8thcentury BC). The holy city did not carry any Hebrew name in history, and the Hebrew language did not exist there or anywhere else, it was Aramaic.”
PA Minister of Jerusalem Affairs emphasize that Temple Mount is “purely Islamic”

Headline: “Al-Husseini rejected Netanyahu’s claims”
“Governor of Jerusalem district and Minister of Jerusalem Affairs Adnan Al-Husseini rejected the statements of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Likewise, he warned against the deception and lies he uses when he speaks of his commitment to maintaining the status quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and not allowing non-Muslims to pray in it, but rather only Muslims.

Likewise, he [Al-Husseini] emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque, including all its mosques, domes, buildings, and plaza, which stands on 144 dunams (approximately 35.6 acres -Ed.), is a purely Islamic site, where it is forbidden for non-Muslims to pray or worship, and its management is under the exclusive authority of the [Jerusalem] Islamic Waqf [Foundation] of the Jordanian Ministry of religion and Islamic matters.”
PA daily regular columnist: “There was no Temple” and “tribe of Israel is a Yemenite Arab tribe that has passed from the world”

Op-ed by Fatah Revolutionary Council member Bakr Abu Bakr, regular columnist for official PA daily
Headline: “Where are we in terms of victory over Netanyahu’s ‘Temple’?”
“Netanyahu won by spreading a mishmash of concepts, in addition to his contribution to the chaos in the region and the publication of lies, while armed with violence and force. One of the noticeable results of this is what his Zionist friend John Kerry declared, who adopted [the idea that] the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque [plaza] is Jewish, and called it the ‘Temple Mount.’ There was no Temple here, and no mountain, and no history, not even in dreams. All this is intended only to advance Netanyahu’s fraud, which is still spreading patiently and moderately, and through daily actions, regarding what he calls the ‘land of Israel,’ or his lies about Jerusalem, which is mentioned dozens of times in the bible, and which according to him does not appear even once in the Quran! … In an attempt to follow in his historian father’s footsteps, Netanyahu also publicized a series of lies… regarding what he calls the ‘kingdoms of Israel,’ and claimed a connection to them. The tribe of Israel is a Yemenite Arab tribe which has passed from the world, and he has no connection to it, as he is a non-Arab who came from Lithuania.”

They [the Israelis] divided the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron and now they want to destroy the Al-Aqsa [Mosque] or to divide it, saying that they want Palestine to be a homeland and a state for Jews only, and that they want to destroy the Al-Aqsa [Mosque] in order to search for the alleged Temple! ... Abbas in speech in Moscow condemns "systematic aggression against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque", claims the Mosque "belongs to Muslims only"

"President of the State of Palestine Mahmoud Abbas called on the international community to provide protection to the holy places of Christianity and Islam in Jerusalem and ensure the freedom of religion, as it existed before the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem in 1967, especially at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
His honor stated during his speech today, Wednesday, [Sept. 23, 2015], at the inauguration of the Moscow Cathedral Mosque in the presence of President of Russia Vladimir Putin and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoan, together with Arab and Islamic delegations and international personalities: 'The systematic aggression against the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, the first direction of prayer and the third holiest [Islamic] sanctuary, in occupied East Jerusalem, the capital of the State of Palestine, cannot serve peace, coexistence and tolerance between the religions and nations. It provides an additional excuse for extremists around the world who use religions in their terror and their aggression against humanity.'
His honor emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to Muslims only, and it is the right of every Muslim in the world to visit it and hold religious ceremonies in its plaza. In addition, he expressed his strong opposition to any measure taken by the occupation, aimed at limiting Muslims' access to it and preventing them from holding their ceremonies freely inside it."

Abbas' advisor: "The Israeli enemy aims to destroy about half of the Al-Aqsa Mosque… and build the alleged Temple in its place"

Abu Al-Einein stated that the Israeli enemy aims to destroy about half of the Al-Aqsa Mosque after it completely takes it over, and called on the Arab and Islamic nations to intervene immediately on all levels in order to restrain Israel and defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque from what the Jewish extremists are plotting against it. Abu Al-Einein called on our people everywhere to come to Al-Aqsa and carry out Ribat (religious conflict/war to protect land claimed to be Islamic -Ed.), and not to leave it as easy prey for the plots of the Israeli extremist right to destroy it and build the alleged Temple in its place.
He concluded with a call to Fatah movement members and all of the factions to enlist for Jerusalem and carry out widespread public uprisings, in order to make the enemy pay a price for its actions 'because the hand that will be raised against the Al-Aqsa [Mosque] will be amputated.'"

PA daily: Israel has no connection to Jerusalem or “this land” and “the children of ‘Israel’” were actually an Arab Yemenite tribe
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 9, 2015
Headline: “Is Netanyahu the only enemy of the Al-Aqsa Mosque?”
“[Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu stood up and stated: ‘How do they (i.e., Palestinians and the Arab and Islamic nation) dare to not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of ‘Israel,’ we have been here for 3,000 years!’ He lied to himself, his supporters, the world, and history… Our Jerusalem was never the capital of a thing called ‘Israel,’ not of the previous and not of the present entity. He and the others [Jews] have no connection to this land, not 3,000 years ago, and not 100 years ago. Likewise, it [Israel] has no genetic, anthropologic, national, or historical connection to the [biblical] children of ‘Israel,’ the Arab Yemenite tribe that is extinct, and which lived at its highest and lowest points in a different geographical region.”
Gaza conference: All excavations since 1968 show Jews have no connection to Temple Mount or “anywhere in Palestine”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 28, 2015
Headline: “The [Lebanese] Al-Quds Institute organized a conference in Gaza on the danger of the Israeli plans against the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
“Politicians and academics warned of the dangerous Israeli plans against Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and of the escalation in the rate of recurring attacks and invasions, which are reaching the level of war crimes, and whose goal is to force the division [of the Al-Aqsa Mosque] by times and areas. Likewise, they noted that the historical facts verify that the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall/Wailing Wall of the Temple Mount) is a holy site for Muslims, and it should not be called ‘the Wailing Wall’, as it has no connection to the Jews, according to a document of the International British Committee from 1930. This was said during a conference organized by the International Jerusalem Institute yesterday [Aug. 27, 2015] regarding the Al-Buraq Wall – between the Islamic right and Jewish claims, with the participation of many experts on Jerusalem, politicians, and academics… Dr. Abd Al-Latif Abu Hashem, an expert on Jerusalem, said that the Jews, according to what their bible says, tried to create their own historical and religious right to Jerusalem by claiming that the Al-Buraq wall is one of the walls of the Temple of Solomon, who is buried under the Al-Aqsa Mosque. However, the historical facts, the archeologists, and all excavations since 1968 have found no proof of Jewish antiquities in the area of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, nor was any proof of their antiquities found anywhere in the land of Palestine. This proves that the presence of Jews in the land of Palestine was nothing but the presence of invaders, like all of the other invaders who conquered Palestine and Jerusalem.”
PA Ministry of Religion refers to the “false and alleged Temple” and claims Jewish connection to Western Wall completely fabricated
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Aug. 25, 2015
Headline: “The occupation gathers all its political and media forces in order to Judaize the Al-Buraq Wall”
“The [PA] Ministry of Religious Affairs stated in a report by the Public Relations and Communication [Department] today [Aug. 25, 2015], Tuesday, that the Israeli occupation is gathering all its forces, political and media, and using force, deception, and fraud, in order to Judaize Jerusalem, all of its parts, whether the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its plaza, graveyards, the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount), or any other heritage or site…
The report states that ‘after the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration), Jewish Zionist announcements appeared in Western press calling for the establishment of their false and alleged Temple, until it reached the point that in 1928 the Jews placed a divider that separated men and women in front of the Al-Buraq Wall, and blew their shofars (i.e., rams’ horns used in Jewish religious ceremonies) there. After the war of June 1967 and the Israeli occupation of East Jerusalem, the first step of aggression was the Judaization of the Al-Buraq Wall and the expansion of its main plaza. This was done by destroying the Mughrabi neighborhood, which was in front of the Wall, and the [stating of the] claim in the media that the Al-Buraq Wall, which is the western wall of the Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount), was part of the remnants of the alleged Solomon’s Temple.’”
