Jerusalem under assault
Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
"Jerusalem is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine - the Jews have no right to it," declared senior PA religious official, Dr. Tayseer Al-Tamimi, PA Chief Justice of religious court. Accordingly, any Jewish life and development in Jerusalem is labeled as "Judaization." Jerusalem is presented as an exclusively Muslim and Christian city, with no regard to history or archeology, and even the existence of the Temple being denied.
PA minister denies Jewish history and complains of “Judaization” of Jerusalem

“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized that the continuing settlement and Judaization of the holy city [Jerusalem], the attacks on its holy sites, the escalating Israeli aggression against Jerusalem, the falsifying of its history with the aim of erasing its cultural, human and historical heritage, and the demographic and geographic changes in the city are all moves that are null and void according to international law, the decisions of the international institutions, and the Geneva and Hague Conventions for the Protection of Cultural Property.
In addition, he warned again of the danger of the racist Israeli violations being planned against [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], the Ibrahimi Mosque (Cave of the Patriarchs), and the rest of our people’s holy sites, all of which confirm that Israel’s aim is to tighten its control over [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], in preparation for destroying it and building their alleged Temple.”

PA minister accuses Israel of goal to rule over Al-Aqsa; refuses to recognize Israel's "existence in Jerusalem"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Feb. 28, 2014
Official PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon from the Al-Tashrifat Mosque in the presidential compound. The sermon was delivered by PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash.
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “In the occupation state (i.e., Israel), they are talking about a tale, about a lie and [the] insane [idea] of extending Israeli sovereignty to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. What sovereignty is this? Whoever told you we even recognize your existence in Jerusalem? Whoever said we recognize your right to even a single millimeter of the land of Jerusalem? Who said this? You even talk about [having] sovereignty over our hearts, over our faith, over our religion. Who said this? Who can imagine such insanity? This insanity will not end well. It will not end well; it will not lead to anything good. They must understand that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is not a red line. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is a line of fire that will burn any hand that may be extended towards it to harm it.”
PLO Executive Committee member mocks Jewish tours that teach about the "alleged Temple"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 27, 2014
“Ahmed Qurei, ‘Abu Alaa’, PLO Executive Committee member and Head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs… said that Jerusalem is in a very difficult situation, which manifests itself in [the fact] that the occupation government has intensified its racist Judaization measures against the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased the settlers’ invasions of its plazas, as well as the discovery and instruction tours they conduct inside it, during which they give lessons on the ‘alleged Temple’…
In addition, the head of the Department for Jerusalem Affairs rejected the criminal actions being perpetrated by the Israeli occupation authorities, which contradict all norms and international conventions: the ongoing excavations beneath the foundations of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He emphasized that these excavations, deep underground, which target the foundations of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, have been going on non-stop for years, to the point that a gigantic synagogue has been built beneath the Mosque.”
Op-ed in PA daily: Jews were never present in Israel, such claims are nothing more than “fairy tales”
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 27, 2014
Op-ed by Adli Sadeq, PLO Ambassador to India and regular columnist for official PA daily
“These days, the occupiers have reached the height of their rampage in their parliament, which is populated by a handful of crazy people reinforced by fairy tales and bundles of dreams, not a single letter of which has been proven true by a single stone of Jerusalem…
Each day, they come out with a new refrain that not [even] the first Zionists before them could have imagined, and pretend that their alleged Temple stood exactly at the site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque…
Recognizing the ‘Jewishness of the State’ is an implicit confirmation that the refugees have no rights, that we stole ourselves a homeland and have not been [living] on our ancestors’ land for thousands of years. If the Jews were indeed present [here] for a short period in the history of our land, that presence was not along the coast, nor in the north or south of Palestine. In other words, the Jews never passed through or were present in the territories which the peace process firmly defines as being outside the negotiations and [designates] as Israeli territory.”
Fatah official denies Jewish historical connection to Western Wall
Source: Al-Filistiniya TV (Fatah Party), Feb. 19, 2014
Al-Filistiniya TV program Special Coverage hosted Fatah Central Committee member Dr. Jamal Muhaisen.
Fatah Central Committee member Dr. Jamal Muhaisen:
“We demand that all the lands conquered in [19]67 be under Palestinian control. As I said, the exchange [of territories] will be in the border areas, not in Jerusalem. When you talk about what is known as the ‘Al-Buraq Wall’ (i.e. The Western Wall of the Temple Mount), even the British committee that came to Palestine in the 1930s and examined the issue found that this is the ‘Al-Buraq Wall’ and not the ‘Wailing Wall.’ For this reason, we repeat that any site with a connection to the religious aspect – we believe in freedom of religion and in people’s [right to] visit the religious sites. However, so far, none of the archeologists, not [even] the Israeli ones, have proved the existence of a single remnant of the Israeli side in the places claimed to be theirs. I repeat: we will only agree to all [parts] of Jerusalem conquered in ’67 being a part of the Palestinian state and the capital of the State of Palestine.

Note: The 1930 Wailing Wall Commission was appointed by the British government, with the approval of the League of Nations, to settle the matter of the Jews’ and Muslims’ rights and claims to the Western Wall. The commission concluded that the Western Wall had served as a Jewish holy site long before it became a Muslim Waqf (an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law) and that it had never served the Muslims for religious purposes. The commission’s final conclusion was that the Western Wall was holy only to the Jews and therefore they should be granted free access to worship at the site.
PA religious leader: Jews have no rights to Western Wall of Temple Mount
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 17, 2014
“[Sheikh Tayseer Al-Tamimi, former Chief Justice of PA religious court] warned of tomorrow’s [February 18, 2014] discussion in the Israeli Parliament on the subject of the bill to extend the sovereignty of the Israeli occupation to include the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, [noting that] if this bill, which is contrary to the law of God and to international treaties and laws, is passed, it will lead to a religious war…
Al-Tamimi added that ‘Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, decreed that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islamic and belongs to Muslims alone… It is part of the religious belief of a billion and a half Muslims, and the Jews have no right to it. No party, no matter how much power and international support it has, can change this established fact by giving the Jews any right to it, or the right to pray in any part of it. The Al-Aqsa Mosque includes all its courtyards, foundations, skies, gates, domes, walls, and specifically, its western wall (Al-Buraq Wall), [parentheses in source], which is, after all, a part of it...’
Al-Tamimi said: ‘It is with great pride that we remember the attitude of President Martyr Yasser Arafat, of blessed memory… who refused to give the Jews any right to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.’”

PA minister: Jews are "employing techniques of falsification and fabrication to turn the historical and religious facts upside down"
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 11, 2014
“[PA] Minister of Jerusalem Affairs and Jerusalem District Governor Adnan Al-Husseini received the new British Consul General, Dr. Alastair McPhail, in his office in the [Jerusalem] neighborhood of Al-Barid yesterday afternoon [Feb. 10, 2014], and briefed him on the latest incidents that have befallen Jerusalem and its residents.
He [Al-Husseini] explained that the arbitrary measures being implemented by the occupation authorities in the various areas – economic, social, political and legal – in addition to the racist separation fence, the support of the settlers’ provocations and rampages, as well as other factors, have paralyzed life in the Holy City. In addition, he noted that the occupation authorities are desecrating the Islamic and Christian holy sites, and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular, and are employing techniques of falsification and fabrication to turn the historical and religious facts upside down, in order to realize their false claims regarding the extension of Jewish character [over the city] and erecting the alleged Temple on the ruins of [the] Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
PA daily calls ancient Jewish Temple in Jerusalem a “myth”
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 30, 2013
“Groups of settlers invaded the Al-Aqsa Mosque yesterday [Dec. 29, 2013] through the Mughrabi gate, under heavy security provided by personnel from special units from the occupation’s police.
Extremist rabbi Yehuda Glick led one of these groups and told a story from the Talmud about the myth of the [existence of] the alleged Temple in the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s location.”

Note: The PA considers any presence of Jews on the Temple Mount an "invasion." However, all visitors are subject to rigorous checks by Israeli security personnel before being granted access to the Temple Mount.
Rabbi Yehuda Glick is the Chairman of the Temple Mount Heritage Foundation that works to increase awareness of the central place the Temple Mount and the Temple hold in Jewish heritage through educational activities and by encouraging people to visit the Temple Mount. He is also active in the Temple Mount Faithful movement whose goal is to build the Third Temple on the Temple Mount. In addition he is the coordinator of the LIBA initiative - The Jewish Freedom on the Temple Mount initiative whose goal is to obtain freedom and civil rights for Jews on the Temple Mount. The Israel Police has banned Glick from entering the Temple Mount and has detained him on several occasions for acting in a way that could disrupt order.

In addition, he stressed that the current situation requires unity to face the Israeli claims that Jerusalem is a Jewish city.”

PA minister: Western Wall is part of Al-Aqsa Mosque and belongs to Muslims by right
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Dec. 6, 2013
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "Jerusalem is religion's trust and history's trust in the hands of all Muslims, in the hands of this Ummah (Islamic Nation). We are Muhammad's heirs. It is we who inherited Jerusalem, by its being conquered religiously through the Prophet [Muhammad]'s will, and later by [Islam] actually conquering it [in 683]. We are its inheritors and it belongs to us and to no one else. Visit Jerusalem. We, as Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims, must visit the Al-Buraq Wall. The Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) is an authentic part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque only... It [the Wall] is our right, it is our permanent right. It is part of our Al-Aqsa [Mosque], without intending to harm the rights of others in any way, and without harming the rights of others. Freedom of worship in our Jerusalem is guaranteed to all... We do not dispute anyone's traditions, and we do not dispute anyone's religion. Nonetheless, we have rights, principles and positions that cannot possibly be altered."

PA official: Jews have no historical rights in the region

“Mayor of Bruqin, attorney Nafez Barakat, said that… the name of the settlement [called] ‘Brukhin’ was taken from the [Arab] village of Bruqin in a disgraceful act of falsification and name-manipulation by settlers. [This is done] for the purpose of deluding themselves [into believing] that they have historical rights in the region, just as they claim that the Temple Mount was located where the Al-Aqsa Mosque is.”
Al-Aqsa and surroundings (i.e., the Temple Mount) belong exclusively to Muslims
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 7, 2013
“Islamic dignitaries in Jerusalem warned of the Israeli occupation’s schemes regarding the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and said that the suggestion to divide the Mosque between Muslims and Jews is playing with fire. This [was said] at a press conference held yesterday [Nov. 6, 2013] by the Supreme Muslim Council of Jerusalem in order to emphasize that what has happened at the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., the Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron will not be repeated at Al-Aqsa.
Chairman of the Islamic Waqf Council Sheikh Abdul Azim Salhab said that the conference is being held in the shadow of powerful settlement attacks against the city of Jerusalem. He stressed that Al-Aqsa and its surroundings, around it and beneath it, belong to Muslims exclusively, and Jews have no rights to it… He went on to say, ‘We, in the Islamic Waqf Department, together with masses of our people who can get to Al-Aqsa, stand before this racist attack, raising our voices and calling out as loudly as we can that Al-Aqsa is in danger, and the great Arab and Muslim Ummah (nation) must relate to these dangers… [We] must unify efforts in order to save the blessed Mosque…’
Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories Sheikh Muhammad Hussein stressed that Al-Aqsa is an Islamic mosque [and is] for Muslims only, and no one will share it with them. He described the occupation’s and radicals’ intrusion into the Mosque as aggression and a direct blow to it… The Mufti added, ‘Enough playing with fire, if they want peace. Enough dragging the region to a blaze that no one can guess how it will end, for attacks on faiths, on religions and on ritual is an attack on security, on peace and on all religious and moral values of this world.’"

PA daily acknowledges possible Jewish connection to ancient Jerusalem well
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 20, 2013
“Near the Monastery of Mar Elias, on the outskirts of Jerusalem, roughly half way between it and Bethlehem, one can find the well of Kadismo that was an important landmark on the historical Jerusalem-Hebron-Bethlehem road before [that road] suffered a painful blow with the occupation of what was left of Palestine in 1967. Researchers tell us that the name of the well is a distortion of the Greek name kathisma, meaning ‘seat’ or ‘place of rest’, while others believe it comes from the Hebrew word kodashim, meaning ‘what is sanctified.’ Since the fourth century, when the Roman Empire adopted Christianity, it has been known as ‘the Virgin’s well.’”
Jews have no connection Al-Aqsa Mosque, which belongs to Muslims only

House of religious ruling – the Jerusalem Mufti’s office) in Jerusalem denounced media publications about the occupation’s plans to build a synagogue on one-fifth of the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s area…
In an announcement published on their behalf yesterday [Oct. 12, 2013], the three organizations described these plans as the peak of corruption and destruction…
They emphasized that Jews have no connection to the Al-Aqsa Mosque – no religious, political or sovereign [connection] – and that the Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to Muslims only, according to Divine Decree.”

PA daily op-ed by Fatah official: “Jerusalem of the Bible” never existed in modern-day Jerusalem
Source: Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 21, 2013
Opinion piece by Bakr Abu Bakr, member of Fatah Revolutionary Council (since 2009) and regular columnist for official PA daily:
“There are many dimensions to the question of Jerusalem, just as there are many dimensions to the Palestinian issue…
Firstly: The historical time dimension of the city of Jerusalem is broad, since for 5,000 years Canaanite-Palestinians have been in this land that was ignored by invaders throughout history… Fifthly: …We still see only crumbs from the money to support Jerusalem’s resolve in the Arab, Islamic and world-wide dimension, while the Palestinians and Jerusalemites alone challenge, resist, and substantiate - by standing firm on their land in the face of the most horrendous kinds of persecution, - [the claim] that our “Al-Quds” (Arab name for Jerusalem) is not “Jerusalem,” and the Jerusalem of the Bible was never here, as has been proven by modern research and excavations.”
