Jerusalem under assault
Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.

Denial of Jewish connection to Jerusalem
"Jerusalem is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine - the Jews have no right to it," declared senior PA religious official, Dr. Tayseer Al-Tamimi, PA Chief Justice of religious court. Accordingly, any Jewish life and development in Jerusalem is labeled as "Judaization." Jerusalem is presented as an exclusively Muslim and Christian city, with no regard to history or archeology, and even the existence of the Temple being denied.
PA Mufti: The Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e., Temple Mount) is "the exclusive right of Muslims"
Source: Ma’an, independent Palestinian news agency, Feb. 12, 2015
Headline: "Grand Mufti warns of the naming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque 'Temple Mount'"
"[PA] Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian Territories and Preacher at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque Sheikh Muhammad Hussein warned about the placement of a sign by the occupation [Jerusalem] municipality near the Council Gate ( i.e., entrance to the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount), with the inscription, 'Temple Mount.' The Mufti said this step came as part of the attempts to divide the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews, extend their influence over it and establish facts on the ground inside it, like what happened at the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron, in order to realize their aspirations to build the alleged Temple on the ruins of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
The Mufti explained that with the elections of the occupation authorities approaching, all the parties are trying to draw the votes of the extreme right by increasing the attack on the Palestinian people and its holy places. He emphasized that the Israeli plan to Judaize Jerusalem and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and to lay hands on them, is an illusion, because the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque with its courtyards, porticoes and all [other] parts, both those above ground and those below - is the exclusive right of Muslims. He also noted that Jerusalem would retain its Islamic character and Arab identity, and that the occupation would not steal its character and identity, no matter how long it continues its crimes and its falsification of facts."

Abbas' advisor on religion: "Jews have no right" to Jerusalem
Source: WAFA news agency, Feb. 11, 2015
Headline: "Al-Habbash demands that UNESCO intervene to prevent the falsification of the facts and history in Jerusalem"
"Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari'ah Judge and the President's [Mahmoud Abbas'] Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, demanded today [Feb. 11, 2015], that UNESCO urgently and immediately intervene to prevent the Israeli occupation from falsifying the facts and destroying the human heritage in Jerusalem. In a press release, Al-Habbash warned of the severity of the escalatory measure implemented by the Israeli occupation municipality crews, in placing a sign in Arabic, Hebrew and English calling the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque 'the Temple of Solomon' near the Inspector's Gate (Council Gate) [parenthesis in source], one of the gates of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Al-Habbash said that Israel's changing of names in the Holy City is a kind of intentional falsification of history and heritage, and a desperate attempt to deny the [city's] Arab and Islamic character and force a new, invented character - the Jewish character. He noted that this was a most dangerous step, heralding grave consequences. Al-Habbash explained that, despite the Judaization actions carried out by the Israeli occupation government and its various branches against Jerusalem, and despite the attempts to eradicate its Arab and Islamic characteristics and the continuing land expropriation and construction of settlements on its land, this will not change the fact that it [Jerusalem] is the religious, political and spiritual capital of Palestine, to which the Jews have no right."

PA Minister of Religion: Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e., Temple Mount) "is an exclusively Islamic and Muslim right
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 5, 2015
Headline: "Ida'is: The occupation opened the new year with over a hundred attacks and incidents of desecration of the holy places"
"[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida'is said that the occupation had opened the first month of the new year with over a hundred attacks and incidents of desecration of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs)... He explained that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque is in grave and direct danger, and that with every sunrise, this danger grows - [a fact that] requires the consolidation of a mode of operation on the Islamic, Arab and international levels, in order to save it [the Al-Aqsa Mosque] from destruction, division or [from] the building of the alleged Temple. He stressed that the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with all its territories, plazas (i.e., including the Temple Mount), buildings, porticoes and foundations both above and below ground, is an exclusively Islamic and Muslim right."

PA Mufti: “The Al-Aqsa Mosque (i.e., Temple Mount) is for Muslims alone”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 20, 2014
“Over 55,000 [Palestinian] citizens, including 200 elderly worshippers from the Gaza Strip, held the Friday prayer in the plazas of the Al-Aqsa Mosque…
The Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories, Sheikh Muhammad Hussein, emphasized during the Friday sermon that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is for Muslims alone, and condemned the policies of targeting the Mosque that are being implemented by the occupation authorities and the extremist Jewish groups. In addition, he urged the citizens to visit it [the Mosque] more often and to do more to protect it, and held the occupation authorities responsible for the consequences of their policy against the Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

PA daily: Israelis “have no historic connection to this land”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 27, 2014
“The Jewish State did not actually exist in the long historic sense as the Kingdom of Judah, the location of which I do not know; and if it did exist, it was [only] for a limited period. The Jewish Khazars had a state, which was the accidental result of the encounter between two cultures – Byzantine Christianity and the Islamic Abbasids. After a consultation between their elders, the Khazar tribes decided to adopt a different religion, in order to be able to live peacefully with their Muslim and Christian neighbors – for had they adopted Islam, this would have meant war with Christianity, while had they converted to Christianity, it would have spelt war with Islam. Thus, the Khazar state was created out of a conflict between two religions, and it quickly collapsed, while the Khazar Jews scattered throughout Central Asia. The majority of the Jews of Israel are their descendants, and they have no historic connection to this land [Palestine/Israel].”
Jewish Temple never existed and Jews never had any connection with the land of Israel
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 24, 2014
Op-ed by Fatah Revolutionary Council member Bakr Abu Bakr, regular columnist for official PA dail
“If we as Palestinians, Arab and Muslims, do not disown the historic myths [prevalent] among us that is, the false Biblical stories about Jerusalem – what they call the ‘People of Israel,’ the house of worship or the Temple, and about their [past] presence on our Arab land in Palestine – then what can we expect the result to be? The myths about the redeeming prophet (and there is no prophet after Muhammad, peace be upon Him) [all parenthesis in source] will naturally prevail, as will the myths that the Israelis (the Jews living in the State of ‘Israel’ today, whose origins can be traced to the Khazars, Russians, Ukrainians and Europeans, and who borrowed their name from an extinct Yemenite tribe) have a ‘country’ and that they were a ‘nation,’ and that the Temple – which actually never existed anywhere in the area – was situated at the site of Al-Aqsa, surrounding it or at a distance of 20 to 200 kilometers from it.
The political, diplomatic, legal, or even the military struggle or the [struggle] on the ground, are not sufficient to refute the narrative that has been perfectly constructed since the 19th century by imperialism and its ambitions, in cooperation with the Zionist mentality of darkness, extremism and racism… and we are the first to have been convinced by them, while we merely argue over tiny details! For example: ‘Yes, they have been here (in Palestine) – but not for long’ or ‘Yes, they had princedoms or kingdoms, but not like these!’ And the evident truth now is that they were never here, and that even those who are here now, who are different, and the ancient ones, whose stories are documented in books, were never [present] in this Arab and Islamic land.”
PA daily op-ed: “Palestine was never… the setting for any Temple or the other Biblical myths”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 23, 2014
Op-ed by Fatah Revolutionary Council member Bakr Abu Bakr, regular columnist for the official PA daily:
“Should we strive for the militant way of thinking, according to which we cannot relinquish even a single grain of [our] demands or of Palestinian land, on which no non-Arab race has ever tread without being driven out? Palestine was never the cradle of any of the prophets of Israel (the extinct Yemenite Arab tribe, to which the Jews living in Palestine today bear no relation) [parenthesis in source], nor did it ever serve as the setting for any temple or the other Biblical myths. How will we correct history and turn it [Palestine] into clear fact? Will we bear on our shoulders today the trust of the Arab, Islamic and Christian [character] of Palestine through the power of thought, history, facts and the true scientific narrative versus the false Israeli narrative, which is full of fairy tales? ... We are at the beginning of the path started by the founder of the Palestinian state in the 18th century, Daher Al-Omar Al-Zaidani, followed by Yasser Arafat, and the Arab Canaanites and purely Arab and Islamic history that preceded them.”

Note: Daher Al-Omar Al-Zaidani, an Arab native of Ottoman-controlled Galilee, was the independent ruler of Northern Palestine in the mid-18th century. Al-Omar founded the modern city of Haifa and fortified numerous cities, creating – with foreign assistance – an autonomous territory that was legitimized by the Ottoman authorities, who awarded him the title of “Sheikh of the Galilee”. Remembered for his relatively enlightened economic policies and tolerance toward Jews and Christians, Al-Omar is often cited as a pioneer of Arab liberation from foreign occupation and – by some contemporary authors – as a forerunner of Palestinian nationalism.
Abbas’ advisor: Jewish Jerusalem is a “fairy tale”
Source: WAFA news agency, Nov. 23, 2014
“Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that Arabs and Muslims around the globe, especially those with foreign citizenship, must go to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and come together to Jerusalem to support the resolve of its residents. During a political forum held at the embassy of the State of Palestine in Algeria, Al-Habbash said: ‘Our people is now in the last stage of a war of existence and self-coercion against the occupation, which is seeking in any way possible to eradicate our identity, force a Caesarian birth of a Jewish entity and clone an illegal entity at our expense.’… In addition, he emphasized that the occupation – which thinks it has succeeded in winning the geographic war with [its] racist fences and roadblocks and that it will have the last word in the fairy tale of Jewish Jerusalem by taking over the Al-Aqsa Mosque – must be opposed.”
Abbas' advisor: No Muslim will ever accept "non-Muslim sovereignty over even a millimeter of... Jerusalem"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Nov. 21, 2014

Abbas’ advisor and Supreme Shari’ah Judge Mahmoud Al-Habbash delivers Friday sermon in the presence of Mahmoud Abbas:

“The [Israeli] violations, arrogance, recklessness, stupidity and foolishness will lead to what we fear - outbreak of a religious war between them [Israelis] and all Muslims... If [war] breaks out, it will not be confined to Palestine’s borders, nor to those of the Middle East. It may spread to the entire world. Wherever there are Muslims, there will be confrontations. Al-Aqsa is a part of the religion, creed and faith of every Muslim, so he will never accept any violation or any attack against it, or any desecration of its sanctity, or any non-Muslim sovereignty over even a millimeter of its land and the land of Jerusalem.”

Israel’s claim that a Temple stood on the site of Al-Aqsa Mosque is false
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 16, 2014
This article was published during a period of high tension in Jerusalem. On Oct. 22 and Nov. 5, 2014, two separate terror attacks took place in which ‎Palestinians ‎drove their cars into pedestrians in Jerusalem, killing 4 and injuring dozens. In addition, on Oct. 29, 2014, Islamic Jihad member Mutaz Hijazi attempted to assassinate Rabbi Yehuda Glick, a prominent activist working to assure rights for Jews to visit and pray on the Temple Mount.
“Fatah spokesman Ahmad Assaf said that [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas had been leading a fierce battle to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque from the [Israeli] attempts to Judaize and take control of it, and to realize [Palestinian] freedom and independence and obtain a decision on setting a timetable for ending the occupation… Assaf added that the occupation government has lost its senses and is trying to change the existing situation at the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In addition, he warned of its actions aimed at dividing the Al-Aqsa Mosque according to place and time, and of its old claims that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was built over the ruins of the ‘Temple Mount’ – a claim they have not succeeded in proving over all these years.”

Note: The physical division and division according to time refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to implement separate prayer times for Muslims and Jews at the site.

Supreme Muslim Council: “Jews have no connection” to the Al-Aqsa Mosque
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 13, 2014
“The Supreme Muslim Council and the Council for Holy Places and Islamic Affairs in Occupied Jerusalem emphasized yesterday [Nov. 12, 2014] that the media reports, according to which the so-called Israeli ‘Minister of Internal Security’ would act together with the Israeli police to install electronic gates at the outer entrances to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, signal the takeover, in practice, of Al-Aqsa. The Council emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is an Islamic mosque, and by divine decree intended for Muslims alone… and [that] its [ownership] is not shared with anyone. Furthermore, [it noted that] the Jews have no connection to it, and that their arrogant power will not buy them any right to it.”
PA daily: “The alleged ‘Temple’” is “myths and lies” and “no proof [of its existence] has ever been found”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 10, 2014
“Fourteen years ago, the Al-Aqsa Intifada (i.e., PA terror campaign 2000-2005) erupted – to be more precise, on Sept. 28, 2000, after the Palestinian masses in general, and in Jerusalem in particular, took to the streets to challenge the criminal [Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon, who had attempted to desecrate the Al-Aqsa Mosque with a group from among the herds of settlers and extremists – those who even today live in illusions of the myths and lies about the alleged ‘Temple,’ of which no proof has ever been found, neither below or around the Al-Aqsa Mosque, or even in all of Palestine. This has been confirmed by scholars and researchers, including Jewish scholars, who have used all possible means [to find proof of the Temple’s existence] – to no avail.”
Abbas' advisor: Western Wall "is ours and will remain ours"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Nov. 7, 2014

Abbas' advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash:
"All of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, including its plazas, stone benches, prayer niches and walls, including the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount), including the blessed Al-Buraq Wall - all these are waqf to us (i.e., an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law). All this is waqf and kharaj land (i.e., land belonging to Muslims) and no one is permitted to sell it or negotiate over it or forfeit it. It is ours and will remain ours. The occupation is the one that will leave."

Note: Islam's Prophet Muhammad is said to have ridden during his Night Journey from Mecca to "al aqsa mosque", i.e., "the farthest mosque" (Quran, Sura 17), and there tied his miraculous flying steed named Al-Buraq to a "stone" or a "rock." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 47, Hadith 3424). In the 1920's, Arab Mufti Haj Amin Al-Husseini decided to identify the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem as that "rock" or "stone," and since then Muslims refer to the Western Wall as the "Al-Buraq Wall."

Abbas: “We need to defend” Muslim and Christian holy places in Jerusalem
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Nov. 5, 2014
Official PA TV broadcast a filler showing Christian and Islamic holy places in Jerusalem together with statements by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas on the need to protect them:
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas: “Jerusalem, Jerusalem the first of the two Qiblahs (directions for Muslim prayer. The Second Qiblah is the Kaaba in Mecca). What, have we forgotten? It is also the Jerusalem sacred to Christianity, of course – the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the Church of the Nativity [in Bethlehem]. We [Muslims] also have our holy places. We need to protect them and defend them, because they are mine!”
Fatah: Al-Aqsa Mosque (Temple Mount) "has Arab, Islamic and Palestinian status"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 4, 2014
“Fatah’s Jenin branch warned of the harm [threatening] the national holy places in general and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular. The branch stressed that the movement would not allow the occupation forces to approach Al-Aqsa, and that the occupation’s scheme to divide the Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount) is criminal, and will lead to an explosion in the region and to renewed tension and confrontations. Fatah called on those countries that have recognized the Palestinian state along the June 4 [1967] borders to express their fears and their opposition to what the occupation state is planning. In addition, Mansur Al-Said, the official spokesman of the [Fatah] branch in Jenin, called on our entire people to beware and prepare to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem, [the latter] being the capital of the State of Palestine, and the [former] being the first direction for Muslim prayer, which has Arab, Islamic and Palestinian status, which the world must take into account. In addition, Fatah published instructions to all its branches in Palestine and abroad to prepare to hold marches and demonstrations against Israel, in the event of any Israeli aggression against Al-Aqsa.”

In addition, [Al-Habbash] emphasized the Arab nature of the Holy City and the Islamic nature of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and that the Jews have no right to either of them.”
Israeli “attacks” on Al-Aqsa Mosque are part of plan to change Jerusalem’s “Palestinian Arab character”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 29, 2014
“[PA] President Mahmoud Abbas presided over a meeting of the Supreme Committee for Jerusalem Affairs yesterday evening, in the presence of Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah. The [participants] discussed the latest developments in occupied Jerusalem, especially the settlers’ continuous invasions of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque. The participants warned of the gravity of Israel’s actions and unceasing attacks and discussed ways to strengthen the resolve of the Palestinian residents in the Holy City and to fight the Israeli violations, whose goal is to cause the Palestinian people to emigrate from Jerusalem and to change its Palestinian Arab character. They warned that the continuation of these provocative attacks and violations would lead to a deterioration of the situation and to an intensification of the cycle of violence, the results of which cannot be foreseen – if Israel continues to allow extremist Jews to continuously invade the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”
From WAFA, official PA news agency

Note: The PA considers any presence of Jews on the Temple Mount an "invasion." However, all visitors are subject to rigorous checks by Israeli security personnel before being granted access to the Temple Mount.
