Jerusalem under assault
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Jerusalem under assault
In 2009 the Palestinian Authority has initiated an unprecedented campaign of historical revision and anti-Israel libels concerning Jerusalem, the focal point being the erasure and denial of 3,000 years of Jewish history in Jerusalem.

In addition, the PA disseminates the libel that Israel is acting both to expel Arabs from Jerusalem and to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Jerusalem libels are designed to evoke religious hatred by portraying Israel and the Jews as a threat to Arabs and Islam.

This section documents the recent intensification of the Palestinian Authority's campaign of distortion, historical revision and hate incitement surrounding Jerusalem.

This cartoon with the caption "Judaization of Jerusalem" shows, from right to left, a sinister-looking Jew first sharing the chair with an Arab and then shoving him off.
[Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, official PA daily, Feb 24, 2009]
"Judaization" of Jerusalem
Since Jews are said to have no connection to Jerusalem, nor any right to live in the city, any Israeli action in Jerusalem is defined as "Judaization" and an attempt to erase the city's supposedly authentic Islamic Arab character. The PA has launched an incendiary libel campaign which presents as fact the lie that Israel is acting to destroy the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to expel Arabs from the city. The goal of this PA alarmist campaign is to promote fear and hatred of Jews and Israelis.

[It should be noted that the PA allegation that Israel is pursuing a policy of ridding Jerusalem of its Arab inhabitants is blatantly untrue. In fact, according to May 2009 statistics released by the Jerusalem Center for Israel Studies, since Israel’s liberation of all of Jerusalem in the 1967 Six Day War, Jerusalem's Jewish population has increased by 186%, with the Arab population of east Jerusalem growing by 291%, almost twice the growth rate of the Jewish population.]

“The Fatah Movement in Nablus today, Wednesday [Dec. 6, 2017], called to come out determinedly and in force against American President [Donald Trump’s] decision to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem. During the emergency meeting convened by Fatah’s Nablus branch today, Fatah called… on the masses of the people, with all of its components and parts, and in all places where it is located, to bear the moral, national, and human responsibility to come out against the aggression that threatens to harm our Islamic and Christian holy sites, and to be ready to express their rejection of the dangerous American bias, if Trump’s speech tomorrow includes a decision to transfer the American embassy to Jerusalem or recognize it as the capital of Israel... Fatah emphasized in a statement that the members of the Palestinian people – who stood [firm] during the last Jerusalem uprising and presented the most spectacular examples of resolve and sacrifice – will stand against any attempt to harm the holy city [of Jerusalem], Judaize it, and change its characteristics and its eternal Arab-Islamic cultural identity.”

PA official on Palestinian Heritage Week in Hebron: “This area… will remain Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic despite the occupation’s attacks and its attempts to Judaize it” and “fabricate” its history

“The [PA] Ministry of Culture and its advisory council, in partnership with the Committee to Renovate Hebron, and in cooperation with the [PA] Ministry of Tourism, cultural centers, and feminist organizations, yesterday [Oct. 10, 2017] opened Palestinian Heritage Week in the Old City, in the center of Hebron…
District Advisor for Old City Affairs Nidal Al-Ja'abari emphasized the connection of Palestinian society to its historical roots, whose source is thousands of years on this land… Head of the Hebron Directorate Atef Al-Jamal referred to Hebron’s history… and said: ‘This area, where Palestinian Heritage Week has been opened, will remain Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic despite the occupation’s attacks and its attempts to Judaize it in various ways. This is a cultural and human heritage that our Palestinian forefathers have created for thousands of years. We must protect and defend it from the fabrication [of history].’”
Palestinian newspaper quotes Islamic religious figure who accuses Israelis of “invading” the Cave of the Patriarchs and “Judaizing” it, and denies any Jewish “right” to the site

“Yesterday [Oct. 10, 2017] an unprecedented escalation in the settlers’ attacks against the religious and civilian sites in the West Bank was recorded. The Israeli occupation forces continued yesterday – on the second consecutive day of the closure of the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) to Muslims in occupied Hebron to protect more than 20,000 Jewish settlers who came to the mosque in order to hold ceremonies for the Sukkot holiday…
Director and Head of the Guardians of the Ibrahimi Mosque Sheikh Hafzi Abu Sneineh said that the occupation authorities are Judaizing Hebron in different ways, including through the media, while pointing out that the number of settlers who invaded the Ibrahimi Mosque during the Sukkot holiday that the Israeli media is noting is not precise, and that through this they are trying to draw additional settlers to visit Hebron and the Ibrahimi Mosque. [Abu Sneineh] said: ‘The Ibrahimi Mosque will remain a religious site for Muslims only, and the Jews have no right of any sort to it.’”

PA Government claims rebuilding of Silwan synagogue south of Al-Aqsa “constitutes a new aggression against Jerusalem” and was done for political, not religious, reasons
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 26, 2017
Headline: “The [PA] government: The participation of senior Israeli officials in the inauguration of a synagogue south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a new aggression against Jerusalem”

“The [PA] national unity government said that the participation of senior Israeli officials in the ‘inauguration’ of a synagogue south of the Al-Aqsa Mosque constitutes a new aggression against Jerusalem, and a serious blow to the natural status and the Arab-Islamic landmarks of the city (refers to the reinauguration of a historical synagogue; see note below –Ed.).
Official [PA] Government Spokesman Yusuf Al-Mahmoud said in a statement yesterday [Aug. 25, 2017]: ‘The [Palestinian] national unity government thinks that the establishment of a synagogue in Silwan, south of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, stems from purely political reasons that are connected to the character of the Israeli occupation government. [The synagogue] is part of the settlement enterprise and has no connection to religion’…
Al-Mahmoud again mentioned the warnings of the leadership and government against the government of Israel’s policy, which is liable to lead to religious wars that nobody wants. He demanded that the international community and free world intervene to put an end to the tensions immediately, and act seriously to establish peace and security in the entire region.”

In 2015, the Jerusalem District Court evicted an Arab family that was living in the building, and members of the Jewish Ateret Cohanim organization moved in. The synagogue is now being restored (2017).

PA daily: Arrest of Palestinian singer for song glorifying terrorist who stabbed 3 Israelis to death is part of Israeli "killing, abuse, settlement, Judaization, and demolitions" against Palestinians
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 31, 2017
Headline: "The occupation arrested the composer of 'A Song for Kubar'"
"The occupation forces yesterday [Aug. 30, 2017] arrested popular singer Muhammad Al-Barghouti (23) and his colleagues, organ player Naji Ali Al-Rimawi and studio owner Nazzal Al-Barghouti, from the village of Kafr Ein north of Ramallah. This was due to a folk song in which he praised his homeland and its Martyrs (Shahids), wounded, and prisoners. (the song glorified terrorist Omar Al-And, murderer of 3 Israelis -Ed.)
Al-Barghouti's arrest was preceded by 'a huge amount' of incitement and racism by the Israeli leaders, which led in recent months and even before that to the cancellation of freedoms, killing, abuse, settlement, Judaization, and demolitions, in blatant violation of human morals and standards... The occupation state - which has a record packed full of assassinations, especially against politicians, artists, writers, and authors - has already closed Palestinian radio stations and news channels on the pretext of incitement in the past..."

PA Council official: Israel’s goal is ”Judaization… destroying the Al-Aqsa Mosque and building the alleged Temple on its ruins”
Source: Amad, independent Palestinian news website, Aug. 21, 2017
“The [PA] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places today, Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2017 – which is the 48th anniversary of the arson of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque – said that the crimes, daily invasions, and Judaization actions that the occupation authorities are carrying out by establishing outposts, excavating tunnels, and preventing worshippers [from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque] are a continuation of the great crime of the arson of the blessed mosque…
Secretary-General of the [PA Islamic-Christian] Council [for Jerusalem and the Holy Places and Fatah Revolutionary Council member] Dr. Hanna Issa said: ‘The arson of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque was the start of a comprehensive and dangerous plan to Judaize the mosque and completely take control of it.'... He added: ‘The crime against the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the rest of the sites that are holy to Islam and Christianity in occupied Jerusalem is being continued by changing their names and details. This is as the occupation authorities and extremists still work with all of their energy to implement the goal that they have striven for – destroying the Al-Aqsa Mosque and building the alleged Temple on its ruins.’”

He added during a speech on behalf of [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas in a ceremony that Al-Quds Open University held yesterday [Aug. 9, 2017] for the launch of the graduation ceremonies of the 20th class of its graduates and to honor the outstanding students: 'We must be careful, as the Israeli assessment is that [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu is a wounded wolf (PMW could find no such statement in the Israeli media, but this apparently refers to corruption investigations against Netanyahu and those close to him –Ed.) who is attempting to take revenge and complete his plan in Jerusalem, and he has opened the way for the settlers to desecrate our holy sites and expel our people.'"

“Fatah Movement Commissioner of Information, Culture, [and Indoctrination] [and Fatah Central Committee member] Nasser Al-Qidwa said that occupied Jerusalem is the symbol of the Palestinian cause and what is happening in it is unacceptable, and Israel must retract all of its steps and return the situation to the way it was before July 14, [2017]…
He noted that despite the occupation removing the metal detectors (placed at the entrances to the Temple Mount following an attack there on July 14, 2017, in which 2 Israelis were murdered; see note below. Israel decided to remove them on July 24, 2017 –Ed.), it placed surveillance cameras and continues the closure of seven of the gates of the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount).”

Editorial in PA daily condemns Israel's "brutal attack against Jerusalem and the plans to Judaize the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque," promotes Jerusalem riots
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 23, 2017
Excerpt of an editorial by the official PA daily

“After an expanded meeting of the Palestinian leadership, which was held two days ago [July 21, 2017] and was dedicated to a discussion on the ways of dealing with the occupation’s brutal attack against Jerusalem and the plans to Judaize the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas gave a speech directed to the Palestinian people. In his speech, he called on all the national activity factions – and particularly on Hamas – to rise above our disagreements, give preference to the national matter over matters connected to the factions, and act for the unity of our people… President Mahmoud Abbas’ call is the call of Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. This is a crucial historical moment: Either there will be national unity to support Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque, or there will be a more brutal occupation and more dangerous plans. But Palestine will not agree to anything other than unity. It will not agree to a continuation of the occupation, and will not agree that its holy sites be harmed or undergo Judaization.”

PA officials: Jews have “no connection” to Temple Mount, continued Israeli “crimes in Jerusalem” will lead to “more violence and spilling of blood in the entire region”

Headline: "Sources of authority in Jerusalem call to boycott the metal detectors, and Ida'is calls to go up to the Al-Aqsa Mosque"

"The Islamic sources of authority in Jerusalem… called on residents of Jerusalem and Palestine to resist all of the Israeli occupation's cruel steps, which are being expressed by a change in the historical status quo, and include placing metal detectors at the Al-Aqsa Mosque gates. They called not to use [the metal detectors] under any circumstances and not to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque through them.
In a joint statement, Islamic sources of authority yesterday [July 17, 2017] called on citizens to go up to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque to pray and serve Allah. They said: 'If they continue to require entry to the Al-Aqsa Mosque by passing through metal detectors, we call on the members of our people to pray and devote themselves to serving Allah before the gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in the streets of Jerusalem, and its alleys.'
[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida’is called on citizens to go up to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to pray at the places they can reach, and to support the members of our people in Jerusalem, who are living these days under the swords of the right-wing [Israeli] government…
Ida'is also issued instructions to focus on the occupation government’s unprecedented attacks and violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the next Friday sermon…

PA official: Israel changing Temple Mount status quo with placement of metal detectors; “more dangerous” than attack by “Jewish extremist” on Al-Aqsa Mosque

Headline: "Tayseer Khaled: Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are the main concern of the leaders of the Arab and Islamic states"

"PLO Executive Committee member and Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) political bureau member Tayseer Khaled called on the Arab and Islamic governments to act to curb the dangers threatening Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque now when it is clear that the government of Israel is using the events of last Friday in the area of the mosque and its plazas (i.e., terror attack on July 14, 2017, 2 Israelis were murdered; see note below –Ed.) as an opening to change the status quo step by step, from letting worshippers pass through metal detectors, to the division of one of the holiest sites in the eyes of Arabs and Muslims according to areas and times (i.e., separate prayer times for Muslims and Jews).
He noted that what is happening at this time at the Al-Aqsa Mosque is much more dangerous than what has happened through all the years of the occupation, including the fire that broke out at the mosque after Jewish extremist Dennis Michael (sic., Michael Dennis Rohan, an Australian Christian; see note below) ignited a fire in its western wing on Aug. 21, 1969."

Following terror attack, Fatah calls on Palestinians to go to Al-Aqsa Mosque to defend it from Israel
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 15, 2017
Headline: “Wall-to-wall national and Arab condemnation of the occupation’s closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
“The Fatah Movement called on the Palestinians to go up to the Al-Aqsa Mosque following Israeli Prime Minister [Benjamin Netanyahu’s] decision to completely close the mosque yesterday (Friday) [July 14, 2017] (the Temple Mount was closed in response to a terror attack at the site that morning in which 2 Israeli border policemen were murdered, see note below. It was reopened on Sunday, July 16, 2017 –Ed.).
The movement said in a press statement yesterday: ‘The Israeli occupation and the systematic Israeli policy of oppressing the members of our Palestinian people, particularly in Jerusalem, preventing the free access of believers to the holy sites, and the repeating invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas by settlers are the root of the problem. They are the beginning of the endless cycle of violence, and they are the factor that necessarily leads to Palestinians being murdered over and over in cold blood, with no consideration for the sanctity of the site and the sanctity of life...’”

Fatah responds to accusations of inciting violence: The “true incitement” is by Israel, which carries out “invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque” and attempts to “Judaize” the Cave of Patriarchs in Hebron

Headline: "Al-Qawasmi: The occupation, settlement, and invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque"
"The Fatah Movement rejected the Israeli accusations against the Palestinian leadership, the movement, and the Palestinians in general, according to which they are inciting to violence. The movement emphasized that the true incitement is inherent in the continuation of the occupation, settlement, ongoing invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its plazas, and attempts to divide and Judaize the purely Islamic Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron.
[Fatah] Movement Spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi said in a press statement today, Monday [July 10, 2017]… that everyone must understand 'that the Palestinian people is the victim of the Israeli occupation, and not as Israel tries to portray [the situation].’"

The PA and its leaders consider all of the Temple Mount an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Therefore they view any presence of Jews on the mount as an "invasion." It should be noted that Jews who visit the Temple Mount only enter some sections of the open areas, and do not enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock.

PA Ministry of Foreign Affairs accuses Israel of “Judaization” of Jerusalem; calls on UN to intervene

"The [PA] Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the occupation's Judaization plan to build a new level under the Al-Buraq (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) plaza at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque…
This was stated following the exposé of the Hebrew weekly Jerusalem, according to which Jerusalem occupation Mayor [Nir Barkat], during a tour with members of the ruling Likud party, announced the municipality’s intention to build an additional level at the Al-Buraq plaza (apparently referring to plan for a tunnel under the Western Wall plaza to improve handicapped accessibility - the source noted here does not exist and these statements could not be found in Israeli newspapers -Ed.) and presented a draft of the aforementioned plan, as part of the occupation’s many plans to deepen the Judaization operations at the Al-Buraq plaza and tunnel…
The ministry again emphasized that occupied East Jerusalem is an inseparable part of the Palestinian territories that were occupied in 1967. It also emphasized that the excavations, Judaization operations, and the settlements and attempts to change the holy characteristics of the city [of Jerusalem] and its holy sites that are being carried out by the occupation authorities are invalid and illegal according to international law and the agreements that have been signed. This requires that all of the countries and the relevant UN organizations cease their silence and act seriously and effectively to stop the Israeli operations and violations and to implement and defend the relevant UN resolutions."
