General supervisor of PA official media calls to prevent the Eurovision from being held in Jerusalem to prevent “legitimization of the Israeli occupation and the Israeli actions, such as Judaization”

“General Supervisor of the Official Media, Minister Ahmad Assaf, yesterday [July 3, 2018] thanked Chairman of the Arab States Broadcasting Union Muhammad Al-Awwash, Secretary-General of the Union Abd Al-Rahim Suleiman, and all of the bodies that responded to the call to intervene with European institutions in order to prevent the Eurovision from being held in occupied Jerusalem. It should be noted that Assaf sent dozens of letters to Arab and European bodies, in which he warned against this event being held in Jerusalem due to it being occupied Palestinian land according to international law and UN resolutions, and by virtue of the international consensus around this. In his letters, which he sent to the Arab League and to European institutions, he explained that holding the Eurovision in occupied Jerusalem would mean legitimization of the Israeli occupation and the Israeli actions, such as Judaization and the destruction of Palestinian houses. He added that this is a severe violation of international law, and especially of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which determines that the reality of an occupied city cannot be changed.”
