PLO official claims Israel wants “religious war,” is “burning” the Al-Aqsa Mosque to establish the “alleged Temple"

“Head of the PLO Department of Jerusalem Affairs [and PLO Executive Committee member] Ahmed Qurei warned of the dangers and consequences of the cruel and unprecedented Israeli attack against the holy city (i.e., Jerusalem) and the Al-Aqsa Mosque… in a pitiful attempt by the occupation government to change the status-quo at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in preparation for its complete Judaization – from the rejection of the [Jordanian] Waqf’s authority to the increase in the invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza by the extremist settlers and rabbis…
He said: ‘The Israeli occupation government’s insistence on increasing the invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its plaza and preventing [Muslim] worshippers from reaching it, is a step that is part of the implementation of the aggressive and racist Israeli policy that indicates the declaration of a religious war. [The war’s] main target is the holy city and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque…’
Qurei added that the occupation authorities are burning the Al-Aqsa Mosque, with all of its characteristics, on a daily basis… in order to realize the largest goal of the occupation state: the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the establishment of the alleged Temple on its ruins.
He emphasized that the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs only to the Muslims, on all of its 144 dunams (approximately 35.6 acres -Ed.), and that it is holy to the same degree in the eyes of Muslims worldwide. He added that no Muslim will agree to the repeated attacks on the Al-Aqsa Mosque, or in any way allow the Al-Aqsa Mosque or any part of it to be turned into a synagogue. Likewise, he called on the Quartet (i.e., US, EU, Russia, and UN), the international institutions, and the UN organizations – and especially the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and human rights organizations - to come out against the dangerous Israeli steps, which will fan the conflict and lead to violence in the region.
Likewise, he emphasized the need for Arab and Islamic coordination in consolidating practical plans and creating an Arab and Islamic safety net for the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is subjected to the fiercest Israeli attack since the occupation of Palestine .”
"Division according to areas and times" refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount, what the Palestinians call the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza. The law seeks to designate separate prayer times and areas of the site for Muslims and Jews.
The PA and its leaders consider all of the Temple Mount an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Therefore they view any presence of Jews on the mount as an “attack.” It should be noted that Jews who visit the Temple Mount only enter some sections of the open areas, and do not enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock.
