Mahmoud Al-Habbash

Mahmoud Al-Habbash was appointed Minister of Religious Affairs by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in June 2009. He served in that position until June 2014, when the Fatah-Hamas unity government was formed. He was then appointed Supreme
Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice.

In a press conference broadcast on Al-Aqsa TV, Al-Habbash explained that when he served as Minister of Religious Affairs, he was responsible for “all activity within the mosques” including the sermons, which require prior approval by his ministry:

“It should be noted that the Ministry of Religious Affairs held the press briefing in the conference hall at the Ministry of Information to talk about the steps taken by the PA in order to regulate the activity of the mosques…
Al-Habbash [PA Minister of Religious Affairs] emphasized that the mosques and everything related to them belong to the Ministry of Religious Affairs, from the employees – the imam, the speaker, the Quran teacher, the librarian, the caretakers and custodians –via the mosque and its adjacent structures… to regulation of the activity and the functioning, in accordance with Shari’ah and civil law…
He emphasized that the Ministry is responsible for all activity within the mosques – the functioning, the centers for Quran study, the calls to prayer, and the sermons – and that the Ministry would not take lightly or be negligent in the fulfillment of its obligation. He noted that the religious lessons, Quran study and other activities going on in the mosques require prior approval by the Ministry.” [Al-Ayyam, Aug. 16, 2010]

In his capacity as minister, Al-Habbash delivered the Friday sermons transmitted on official PA TV, using them to convey different messages to the people. The sermons, many which of are documented on PMW’s website, are a reflection of the messages that the Ministry of Religious Affairs choose to disseminate to the Palestinian people.

A recurring message propagated in Al-Habbash's sermons is that Palestinians are in a Ribat, an eternal religious conflict with Israel. In many of his sermons, Al-Habbash emphasizes the importance of Ribat as a religious duty incumbent upon all Muslim Palestinians, as expressed in the following example:

"Allah has preordained for us the Ribat (religious war) on this blessed land. We are committed to it by Allah’s command. Let no one be mistaken or under the illusion that Ribat (religious war) is a choice and nothing more. It is a commandment that necessitates hardship and requires the person to rush to fulfill this command. If Allah has chosen you for Ribat on the land of Ribat, you, the choicest of God’s servants, then this is an honor. The enemy is patient, it is waiting for the nation to collapse. The struggle over this land is not merely a struggle over a piece of land here or there. Not at all. The struggle has the symbolism of holiness, or blessing. It is a struggle between those whom Allah has chosen for Ribat and those who are trying to mutilate the land of Ribat." [Official PA TV, Feb. 12, 2010]

Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 3, 2017
Headline: “Al-Habbash: The entire world is liable to pay the price if the reality changes in Jerusalem”

“[PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine, [and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice] Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that these days there is much talk targeting Jerusalem , among them [reports] that the US wants to recognize it as the capital of Israel as a prelude to transferring the American embassy to it.
During a speech that he gave yesterday [Dec. 2, 2017] at a ceremony for the birthday of Prophet [Muhammad] at the [PA] presidential headquarters in Ramallah on behalf of President [Abbas] and in [Abbas’] presence, Al-Habbash added: ‘The clear position of the president, the Palestinian people, the Arab nation, and the Islamic nation is that if this occurs, it means the total destruction of the peace process. We say this clearly – if any change takes place in the political reality of Jerusalem, the entire world will pay the price of this targeting and change.’ He continued: ‘Jerusalem is our capital, and we will not agree to anything else. Any other plan – it would be better that its developers keep it to themselves. This is not only our position; it is the position of the Arab and Islamic nation, led by our brothers in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan.’”

Abbas advisor: The Temple Mount will remain a “purely Islamic” mosque under Muslim sovereignty, despite Israeli “acts of falsifying history and distorting historical facts”
Source: Donia Al-Watan (independent Palestinian news agency), Nov. 26, 2017
"Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine, [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, [and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice] Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash… explained that the Palestinians in all of their varieties and leaders, and the Arabs and Muslims together with them, will never allow the occupation authorities to impose their sovereignty over the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount), which was and will remain a purely Islamic mosque, over which non-Muslims have no sovereignty. This is as was determined by divine decree in the holy Quran and also by UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) resolutions, despite all the acts of falsifying history and distorting historical facts that the Israeli occupation state is attempting to carry out."

Note: Israel has publically stated multiple times that it has no intention whatsoever of changing the status quo at the Temple Mount.
Abbas’ advisor denies attributed statements that were negative toward killed terrorists: "The Martyrs are more honorable than all of us, and all of us bow our heads before [their] heroic acts"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 5, 2017
“Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine, [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash denied the publications of several people on social media about statements attributed to him regarding the Martyrs (Shahids) that fell in recent days in the Gaza Strip (refers to terrorists killed in an attack tunnel in Israeli territory; Reports were published on Facebook alleging that Al-Habbash condemned tunnel digging and said that those who die digging a tunnel are not Martyrs –Ed.).
Al-Habbash said in a press statement: ‘We are proud of our Martyrs and the members of our people that stand firm everywhere who have fallen because of the criminal occupation – whatever the path and location by which they have risen [to Heaven]. We consider all of them Martyrs with Glorious Allah.’ [...]
Al-Habbash emphasized that whoever published this fake and baseless news item will be prosecuted and persecuted by the people, because the Martyrs are more honorable than all of us, and all of us bow our heads before the heroic acts of the members of our people and their sacrifices in the struggle against the occupier that steals our land, our Jerusalem, and our freedom.”

Abbas advisor: Balfour Declaration is “a promise from one without ownership to one that is undeserving” [i.e., Jews] which was a “crime”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 30, 2017
"[PA] Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized that the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration) is a promise from one without ownership to one that is undeserving. [Al-Habbash] held Britain responsible for the tragedy resulting from [the promise], and from which the members of our people and the peoples of the region are suffering due to this ominous promise, and [said] that this injustice must disappear so that the world and region will live calmly and in peace. [Al-Habbash] added that this crime that Britain committed caused tragedies to the Palestinian people, and it is a crime against our people and the Muslims in general…
He noted that after 100 years, instead of Britain apologizing it is holding a celebration for the anniversary of this crime, and British Prime Minister [Theresa May] is proud of her country's crime, due to which blood was spilled and rights were stolen… The supreme Shari'ah judge explained that after 100 years of oppression, our people is still resisting, and its determination has not been broken."

Abbas’ advisor on religion: All Muslims must visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque and carry out Ribat in it
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 28, 2017
“Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized the brotherhood between the Muslims in all countries of the world… Al-Habbash said this yesterday [Oct. 27, 2017] during a Friday sermon at the Mercies of the World Mosque in Hyderabad, India…
He noted that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is occupied because of the rift between the Muslims [internally] and because of their weakness, and that Al-Aqsa Mosque will not revert to being under the rule of Islam until the Muslims unite.
Al-Habbash demanded that the Muslims act to liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque and fill it through visits from around the world... [Al-Habbash added:] ‘This is the least the Muslims must do today – to fill the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to visit it, to close themselves inside it, and to carry out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) in it – as is being done in Jerusalem by the Palestinians who are struggling against the occupier and carrying out Jihad through Ribat, prayer, and closing themselves in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and its plazas.’ He continued: ‘My advice to you is to make a decision in your hearts to visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and that today you turn the visit to the Al-Aqsa Mosque into part of your Jihad…’”

Abbas’ advisor: Balfour Declaration was an “ugly crime,” giving Palestine to “undeserving” Jews
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Oct. 20, 2017

Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "In another few days we will mark the miserable anniversary of the ugly injustice and ugly crime that befell our people, through what is known as the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration). In another few days, on Nov. 2 [2017], it will be 100 years of the ugliest injustice to ever befall [our] people in this land, in the modern age. One with no ownership of this land – Foreign Secretary [Arthur Balfour] of Britain which occupied Palestine while having no ownership of any part of Palestine, not even one millimeter or one grain of sand – gave a promise to one undeserving who has no connection to this land, not religiously or historically, at the expense of the Palestinian people... They [Britain] have no ownership and they have no right, and those to whom they made the promise [the Jews] have no right to it... Balfour and Britain committed this crime at our expense and at the expense of our history and rights, and this is not consistent with reason, religion, law, and morals."

Abbas’ advisor: US Ambassador “motivated by satanic urge”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Sept. 8, 2017

Official PA TV, Friday prayers from the mosque at the PA headquarters in Ramallah. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and Fatah Central Committee member Jamal Muhaisen are in the audience.

Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs and Supreme Shari’ah Judge: "One of the representatives of the superpowers - who some people consider to be the most expert and knowledgeable people, the greatest supporters of justice, and the greatest democrats - one of them [US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman] spoke several days ago about the occupation, which is clear even to the biggest idiot, and all the more so to a wise man. Regarding the Israeli occupation of the land of Palestine - he [Friedman] said that it is an ‘alleged occupation,’ in other words: ‘You claim there is an occupation? It isn't really an occupation.’ What idiocy is this? What satanic urge motivates these people? These are people who have lost all morals, who watch the oppressed and support the oppressors and stand by their side."

In an interview with the Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post on Sept. 1, 2017, US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman was asked what had taken him most by surprise since being appointed ambassador.
His response: “'I think the American Jewish community tends to look at Israel somewhat myopically,' he said. The Right, he said, is portrayed as believing that peace is not possible. The Left, he explained, is portrayed as believing that only if the 'alleged
Abbas’ religious advisor claims Israeli security measures on Temple Mount “constitute aggression against religious and political rights of Muslims”; Fatah claims Israel planning to “empty Jerusalem” of Palestinians
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 20, 2017
Headline: “Friday is a day of general high-alert and prayers will not take place except at the Al-Aqsa Mosque”

“Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash called on the international community to act before it will be too late to prevent the deterioration of the situation in the Middle East and the world because of the continuation of the racist Israeli attacks against the Al-Aqsa Mosque (Israel placed metal detectors at its entrances after a terror attack in which 2 Israelis were murdered took place there on July 14, 2017; see note below –Ed.).
The supreme Shari’ah judge emphasized that the responsibility for the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the sole right of Muslims, and that the Israeli interference in Al-Aqsa Mosque affairs constitutes aggression against the religious and political rights of the Muslims.

The Fatah Movement yesterday [July 19, 2017] again emphasized its absolute opposition to the Israeli steps of aggression in occupied Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque.
Fatah Revolutionary Council member [and Official Fatah Movement Spokesman] Osama Al-Qawasmi said in a press statement that Fatah will not agree to the implementation of the Israeli plan to empty the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy city [of Jerusalem] of its original inhabitants, the members of the Palestinian people.
Al-Qawasmi added: ‘We and all the members of our people that carries out Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) condemn the illegal steps of the occupation authorities, and also oppose entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque through metal detectors.’”

PA officials: Jews have “no connection” to Temple Mount, continued Israeli “crimes in Jerusalem” will lead to “more violence and spilling of blood in the entire region”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 18, 2017
Headline: "Sources of authority in Jerusalem call to boycott the metal detectors, and Ida'is calls to go up to the Al-Aqsa Mosque"

"The Islamic sources of authority in Jerusalem… called on residents of Jerusalem and Palestine to resist all of the Israeli occupation's cruel steps, which are being expressed by a change in the historical status quo, and include placing metal detectors at the Al-Aqsa Mosque gates. They called not to use [the metal detectors] under any circumstances and not to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque through them.
In a joint statement, Islamic sources of authority yesterday [July 17, 2017] called on citizens to go up to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque to pray and serve Allah. They said: 'If they continue to require entry to the Al-Aqsa Mosque by passing through metal detectors, we call on the members of our people to pray and devote themselves to serving Allah before the gates of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, in the streets of Jerusalem, and its alleys.'
[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida’is called on citizens to go up to the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to pray at the places they can reach, and to support the members of our people in Jerusalem, who are living these days under the swords of the right-wing [Israeli] government…
Ida'is also issued instructions to focus on the occupation government’s unprecedented attacks and violations against the Al-Aqsa Mosque during the next Friday sermon…

Abbas’ religious advisor: Jews have no right to Temple Mount; Netanyahu is dragging region toward a “merciless religious war”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 4, 2017
Headline: “Al-Habbash: Netanyahu is dragging the region in to a volcano of religious war"

"Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decisions are a sort of declaration of war against the Al-Aqsa Mosque and a dragging of the region to the opening of a volcano of merciless religious war that will bring about total destruction, and by whose fire everyone will be burned.
Al-Habbash said this after Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced the cancellation of the ban on Israeli Parliament Members and ministers entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas (i.e., the Temple Mount)…
He noted that this step is a blatant violation of the international resolutions regarding the holy sites in the holy city [of Jerusalem], and of the occupying authority’s obligation to defend them and prevent the falsification of their history with false claims that have no connection to history or human civilization.
Al-Habbash noted that the Al-Aqsa Mosque and all facilities of the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount), including the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount), are an Islamic site that belongs only to the Muslims, and that nobody but them has a right to it. This is based on the divine decision that appears in the Al-Isra Sura [of the Quran] (i.e., describing Prophet Muhammad's Night Journey – see note below), in addition to the international decisions on the matter and the latest UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) resolutions that affirmed the Islamicness of the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary. Al-Habbash also noted that the Palestinians will not let their Al-Aqsa Mosque be subjected to violations and desecration by the extremist gangs and the Israeli right, which is leading Israel and the region to disasters, wars, and destr
Abbas’ advisor: Israeli minister’s dress with Temple Mount was ”racist and a denial of history,” Jerusalem is “Arab and Islamic,” Temple Mount “belongs only to Muslims”
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, May 18, 2017
Headline: "Al-Habbash condemned the Israeli minister of culture's harm to the sites holy to Islam"

"Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash condemned the open provocation of extremist Israeli Minister of Culture [and Sport] Miri Regev of the sensibilities of the Muslims and Palestinians by wearing a dress on which was a picture of the holy Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount), including the Dome of the Rock and the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque…
He described this behavior as racist, a denial of history and culture, and a failed attempt to steal the culture of our people that has been rooted in this land for thousands of years. He also said that if the head of the cultural pyramid in Israel commits theft in broad daylight before the eyes of the whole world, this is proof that all of the occupation state’s institutions are uniting in order to falsify the facts and challenge the decisions of the international community and the world, which have verified that the holy city [of Jerusalem] is Arab and Islamic and that the holy Jerusalem Sanctuary, with all of its sections, belongs only to the Muslims and nobody but them."

Abbas’ advisor to foreign Muslim audience: Jerusalem is “Islamic by divine decree,” Israel “perpetrates a historical and cultural massacre against the Islamic culture and heritage”
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Feb. 21, 2017
Headline: "Al-Habbash in a lecture in Bosnia: There is a massacre of the Islamic heritage and culture in Jerusalem"

"Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash gave a lecture at the Islamic College in Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia…
During the lecture Al-Habbash spoke about the religious and historical status of Jerusalem. He noted… that the Islamic identity of Jerusalem was established by divine decree and not by human decree, as is stated in [Prophet Muhammad’s] Night Journey [Quranic] Sura …
Al-Habbash said that Jerusalem is now in its most difficult period, in which an invasion of thought and heritage are being perpetrated, and the Islamic identity in it is being erased through an attack led by the occupation through the extremist settler NGOs and the attempt to undermine the awareness of global public opinion. [He added that this is being perpetrated] through a falsification of the facts and through false claims that have no basis in the past or present…
He noted that what is happening in Jerusalem is a historical and cultural massacre against the Islamic culture and heritage…
He also explained that the invitation to the Muslims who are able to do so to visit Jerusalem had the greatest impact on the spirits of the residents of Jerusalem, and that it constitutes a double message: [first] to the occupation, which is that Jerusalem will not be alone and is not easy prey, and [second] to the Palestinians, which is that they are not alone…
Al-Habbash said that visiting Jerusalem and praying at the Al-Aqsa Mosque is normalization with the Palestinians, and not normalization with the occupation."
Abbas’ advisor: Non-Muslims have no right to Temple Mount, including the Western Wall
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Feb. 15, 2017
Headline: "Al-Habbash in response to the statements of Erdan: Non-Muslims have no right to the Al-Aqsa Mosque"
"Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is Islamic property that belongs to the Muslims alone by virtue of a divine decision... Al-Habbash emphasized yesterday [Feb. 14, 2017] - in a press release in response to the statements of Israeli Minister of Public Security Gilad Erdan (about the necessity to gather archeologists to attest to the Jewish history of Jerusalem –Ed.) - that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is a pure Islamic heritage, and that non-Muslims have no right to it. He emphasized that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is part of the Islamic faith, and prayer there [at the mosque] is the right of Muslims alone. Likewise, the Islamic [Jordanian] Waqf has the legal sovereignty over all facilities of the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount) – the plazas, the gates, and the walls, including the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall).”

Abbas advisor: Israeli Muezzin law regulating noise will lead to “ruinous religious war”
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Feb. 12, 2017
Headline: “Al-Habbash: Israel is dragging the region into a religious war with the law banning the call of the Muezzin”
“Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash condemned the Israeli decision to approve what is called the Muezzin Law, which prevents the freedom of sounding the call of the Muezzin (i.e., the person who sings the Muslim call to prayer) with loudspeakers at mosques (sic., the law does not refer to any specific religion), and particularly in the dawn prayer. He said that these policies are liable to drag the region into a ruinous religious war that will not stop at the borders of Palestine, but rather could even spread to the region and the world.”

Abbas' advisor on religious affairs calls on Imams and Christian clergy to preach about the dangers of transferring the US embassy to Jerusalem
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 13, 2017
Headline: "Al-Habbash called on Imams of mosques in Arab and Muslim states to focus on the dangers of transferring the US embassy to Jerusalem"
"Supreme Shari'ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas'] Advisor on Religious [and Islamic] Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash yesterday [Jan. 12, 2017] called on religious scholars and Imams of mosques in the Arab and Islamic world to speak in the Friday sermons about the dangers of transferring the American embassy to occupied Jerusalem.
Al-Habbash related in a press statement to the dangers inherent in the US taking this unwise step, due to its implications for international peace and security.
He added: 'We call on the Imams of mosques in all Arab and Islamic states to deal with this grave matter during the Friday sermons. We also hope that the Christian clergy will also do this in their religious sermons this Sunday, as Jerusalem has an important place in the hearts of more than 1.3 billion Muslims in the world. In addition, it is also holy to Christians, and we do not agree to the damaging of its religious status and its identity.'
He continued: 'Everything could collapse if they transfer the embassy to Jerusalem and damage its value and meaning, as this could open wide the door to scenarios that no one wishes for. This is because the Al-Aqsa Mosque is the first direction of prayer for the Muslims and the third holiest “Noble Sanctuary.” Jerusalem also includes holy sites important to Christians, and primarily the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.' Al-Habbash said: 'Transferring the American embassy to Jerusalem constitutes an unacceptable step as it contradicts international law, and we hope that the administration of [US] President[-elect] Donald Trump will not take such a step.’"

Abbas’ advisor on religious affairs: If the US moves its embassy to Jerusalem it is “a declaration of war on all Muslims”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Jan. 6, 2017

Official PA TV, Friday sermon by Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash, in the presence of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas

Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash:  "The new American administration intends to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem. In a simple, calm, and rational manner, in clear words that need no explanation and which are unambiguous: Such a step, for every Muslim, is a declaration of war on all Muslims. It's a declaration of war on all Muslims. We are no one's enemies, and we do not want to be. We are not enemies of the US and we do not want to be. However, when something harms our faith and our existence, we cannot stand by and do nothing. We will not agree to this under any circumstances. This will not pass in silence... The entire Muslim world will not accept it, and the entire Christian world will not accept it. Occupied Jerusalem is our eternal capital, the capital of our existence and the capital of our state. In politics there can be compromises here and there... In politics there can be negotiation. However, in matters of religion, faith, values, ethics, and history, there can be no compromises. Therefore, it isn't possible to compromise on or negotiate over Jerusalem. This of course does not mean that we will prevent anyone from considering Jerusalem their direction of prayer. Our Jerusalem will remain open to all believers as it has been. Open to all of the monotheists."
Abbas’ Advisor on Religious Affairs invents Palestinian history: Palestinians have existed in this land “from before Abraham came to it, more than 5,000 years ago”
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Dec. 30, 2016

Official PA TV, broadcast of Friday sermon by PA Supreme Shari’ah Judge and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash, with Abbas in attendance

Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash:
”They (i.e., the Israelis) have denied our existence and our lives. They have denied that we are a people that has existed on this land from before Abraham came to it, more than 5,000 years ago. We have been on this land in a continuous existence.”

Al-Habbash claims that there was an ancient Palestinian people that predated Abraham. The Bible says Abraham dwelt “many days in the land of the Philistines.” (Genesis 21: 34). The Bible’s “Philistines” have no connection to the modern Arab Palestinian people. The Philistines were a people of Greek origin who settled in the land of Canaan at the beginning of the Iron Age (1150 - 586 BCE) and lived beside the Israelite tribes. The Philistines were exiled by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon in 604 BCE and ceased to exist as a nation soon afterward.
The land of “Judea” was renamed “Palestine” by Rome in 136 CE, as a punishment to the Jews for participating in the Second Jewish Revolt against Rome, known as “The Bar Kochba Rebellion.” Arabs first arrived in the land of Israel/Judea with the Muslim invasion of 637 CE. Arabs of “Palestine” first identified themselves as “Palestinians” in the 20th century.
Abbas’ advisor on Religious Affairs meets with families of murderers

Headline: “Habbash to the relatives: The [PA] president is determined to ensure the release of the Martyrs’ bodies”

“Supreme Shari’ah Judge of Palestine and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious [and Islamic] Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized that the leadership, and President Mahmoud Abbas at its head, is determined to ensure the release of the bodies of the Martyrs (Shahids) [being held by Israel] and to ease the tragedy of their families. At the same time, he emphasized that the president opposes the impossible conditions that the occupation is placing in order to delay the transfer of the bodies and their burial.
These statements were made during a meeting that Al-Habbash held yesterday [Dec. 15, 2016] at his office in the supreme Shari’ah judge office building with a delegation on behalf of the families of the Hebron district Martyrs whose bodies are being held in the occupation’s [morgue] refrigerators. Al-Habbash clarified that the decision to hold the bodies of the Martyrs and the delay in their release is an Israeli political decision, which is included as part of the extortion of members of our people, making them succumb, and carrying out a policy of collective punishment against their families. Likewise, he noted that it is the right of the families to bury their Martyr sons, and promised them to pass their pleas to His Honor the President.
The families of the Martyrs expressed their appreciation for the positions of the president and for the ongoing aid to ease their suffering, and thanked the supreme Shari’ah judge for his interest in their just cause.”

Supreme Shari’ah Judge, Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “In the last two days we have seen, and all the others have seen, the fires that have taken place (i.e., a wave of suspected Palestinian arson attacks in November 2016). We could have stood on the sidelines, and it is possible that no one would have blamed us. And it is even possible that some of the demagogues would have thought that this was the proper position to take. But our values, our religious values and our national cultural values, compel us to take part in putting out these fires. The Palestinian search and rescue forces took part in putting out the fires in Israel out of ethical and humane motives, because of the wonderful culture, and because of the most ethical direction of the Palestinian leadership. These are our values, and we will not deviate from them, even towards those who have done injustice to us and attacked us. Aggression is not a reason for aggression, or for renouncing values.”
Abbas advisor:"Israel is disturbed by the call to prayer because it reminds [Israel] five times a day that this land is Palestinian and a waqf that belongs only to the Muslims"
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Nov. 14, 2016
Headline: "Al-Habbash: The call to prayer will be sounded and our mosques are full of believers, despite the occupation's opposition"
"Supreme Shari’ah Judge and [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash condemned the steps of the occupation with all its institutions... especially in everything regarding the decision of the committee of Israeli government ministers to bring the bill banning the sounding of the call to prayer in the mosques to what is called the 'Israeli Parliament' for ratification.
In a press statement this evening (Monday) [Nov. 14, 2016], Al-Habbash described these steps as steps of oppression and a harsh blow to the freedom of worship… He clarified that these steps will lead the occupation and its leaders to the International Criminal Court as war criminals, especially after the latest resolutions of UNESCO (UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), according to which the Jerusalem Noble Sanctuary (i.e., the Temple Mount) is Islamic and the Old City of Jerusalem is an exclusively Islamic heritage [site]. He added that Israel has gone crazy in the wake of UNESCO's latest resolutions…
The supreme shari’ah judge emphasized: 'Our mosques will remain full of believers, and no one in this world will be able to silence the call to prayer as long as there is one Palestinian on this land.' He noted: 'Our mosques precede the occupation state; it has never happened and will never happen that they will not sound the call to prayer.' Likewise, he clarified: 'Israel is disturbed by the call to prayer because it reminds [Israel] five times a day that this land is Palestinian and a waqf (i.e., an inalienable religious endowment in Islamic law) that belongs only to the Muslims."

Abbas’ advisor on religious affairs: The entire Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza has always been a purely Islamic property. Not even the Jews ever claimed ownership of it

And no one, [not] even the Jews, ever claimed - they have not claimed ownership of it before. Friday sermon in presence of PA Chairman Abbas, on official PA TV, on Oct. 14, 2016

Mahmoud Abbas' advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "Jerusalem is occupied Palestinian land. Jerusalem is the property of the Palestinians. The UNESCO resolution yesterday [Oct. 13, 2016] is a victory for the truth. It is a victory for justice. It is a victory for the true history of this land and for all of humanity. UNESCO's resolution confirms what we think and believe in, that Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular, and the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., Western Wall) and the Al-Buraq [Wall] plaza are all purely Islamic and Palestinian assets and no one has the right to be our partner in that. No one has the right. We are the owners and we have the right to it. Only the Muslims have the right to the Al-Aqsa [Mosque] and the Al-Buraq [Wall] and the Al-Buraq [Wall] plaza which is purely Islamic waqf property... This is a message to Israel from us (i.e., the Palestinians) that we have the right and from all of the international community. [The message] from us is that we will not renounce our right as long as we live. And even if we die, future generations will follow us from our sons and grandchildren who will adhere to this right."

"[Supreme Shari’ah Judge and] Advisor to [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas on Religious [and Islamic] Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash confirmed to [the independent Palestinian news agency] Wattan the veracity of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy report [from Oct. 13, 2016], which stated that a meeting was held that was described as 'unprecedented' between Palestinian figures led by Mahmoud Al-Habbash and top Israeli rabbis, hosted by the occupation [Israeli] President Reuven Rivlin.
The institute stated in its report: 'In the first event of its kind, top Israeli Jewish and Palestinian Muslim religious leaders met, including the greatest rabbis in Israel, top [rabbis] from a prominent Jewish yeshiva in the West Bank, and top advisors on religious affairs to President Mahmoud Abbas, together with Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in order to strengthen peace and emphasize their opposition to all forms of violence based on religion.'
In the statement given by the participants it was stated: 'God created life and commanded life. Therefore, we denounce the killing of innocents or any type of attack against the other and believe that the deliberate killing of innocents or an attempt to kill them constitutes terror, whether it is carried out by Muslims, Jews, or others. On this basis, we encourage all our people to act for a just peace, mutual respect for human life, maintaining the status quo of the holy sites, and the eradication of religious hate.'"

Whoever gives that which does not belong to him to one who has no right to it will end up in the garbage bin of history as [British Foreign Minister Arthur] Balfour did before him, but the Palestinian people will remain and Jerusalem will remain.”

The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and is seen as the basis for later international commitments to establish the State of Israel.

He noted that the ongoing escalation, the consecutive invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza and the attempt to spill the blood of the worshippers clearly exposes without a shadow of a doubt the planned Israeli intentions to create facts on the ground, on the way to a division of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza according to areas and times.”

Abbas' advisor: Jews “are thieves who stole the land… we have been here for 5,000 years”

Mahmoud Abbas' advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "They [the Jews] claim that there was a Temple here. Those are unfounded claims, myths, and rumors. However, the problem between us and them is not a problem of religious or historical narrative. The problem is that they are thieves. The problem is that they are thieves who stole the land, and who want to steal the history, but history cannot change and cannot be falsified. The facts bear witness to it. We have been here for the last 5,000 years, and have not left this land. We have not left this land. Our forefathers are the monotheist Canaanites and Jebusites. There never was an ancient Palestinian-Arab nation. Arabs first arrived in the land of Israel/Judea with the Muslim invasion in 637 CE. Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "The use Americans or others make of the term 'Temple Mount' rather than the 'Al-Aqsa Mosque [plaza]' is unacceptable and should be condemned... The Al-Aqsa Mosque, which includes its plaza, all the gates, all the walls, all the facilities with and without a roof, and all the walls, including the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall) which is an Islamic wall, an Islamic Waqf - a property of the Muslims - no one can deprive them of this ownership... In his announcement today [Sunday, July 26, 2015], Al-Habbash warned the decision-makers in the occupation state not to take advantage of any Jewish extremist organizations’ actions against the holy city and holy places for the purpose of establishing facts on the ground that would lead to the division of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque [between Jews and Muslims] according to space and time. Abbas’ advisor: Israel benefits from ISIS attacks in Egypt

Supreme Shari’ah Judge, Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs and Chairman of the Supreme Council for Shari'ah Justice Mahmoud Al-Habbash writes in reply to the ISIS terrorist attack in Egypt:
“I have no doubt that the main beneficiary – and perhaps the only one that really benefits – of the attack in Egypt is Israel. Simply put, this means that whoever harms Egypt is acting for the good of Israel, whether or not they want to.”

Al-Habbash received many replies supporting his words. One was the anti-Semitic response of Ashraf Salameh Abu Islam which Al-Habbash ‘liked’:
“This is what the Jews are working towards: the establishment of the great kingdom from the Iraq river [Euphrates] to the Nile. It used people with twisted, extreme faith, and the Jews are behind all that is happening from Iraq to Egypt. Unfortunately, there are those who implement their (i.e., the Jews) plans in the name of Islam.”

Al-Habbash emphasized that at the end of the road, the meeting place would be there, in Jerusalem, at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque – noble, dignified and liberated – without which there would be no peace or stability for anyone in the region and the world at large, [Jerusalem] being the crown jewel, and without it there can be no state, no life and no honor.”
Abbas advisor: The Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem are under “dangerous attack”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 23, 2014
Headline: “Al-Habbash: The Holy City is subjected to the most dangerous attack since the beginning of the occupation – a protest at the Al-Aqsa Mosque against the invasions”
“[Supreme Shari’ah Judge and PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas’] advisor on Religious [and Islamic] Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash warned of the danger in the Israeli attack against the Al-Aqsa Mosque. He emphasized that Jerusalem is being subjected to the most dangerous attack since the beginning of the Israeli occupation.”

The PA and its leaders consider all of the Temple Mount an integral part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Therefore they view any presence of Jews on the mount as an “invasion.” It should be noted that Jews who visit the Temple Mount only enter some sections of the open areas, and do not enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock.

“Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that Arabs and Muslims around the globe, especially those with foreign citizenship, must go to the Al-Aqsa Mosque and come together to Jerusalem to support the resolve of its residents. During a political forum held at the embassy of the State of Palestine in Algeria, Al-Habbash said: ‘Our people is now in the last stage of a war of existence and self-coercion against the occupation, which is seeking in any way possible to eradicate our identity, force a Caesarian birth of a Jewish entity and clone an illegal entity at our expense.’… In addition, he emphasized that the occupation – which thinks it has succeeded in winning the geographic war with [its] racist fences and roadblocks and that it will have the last word in the fairy tale of Jewish Jerusalem by taking over the Al-Aqsa Mosque – must be opposed.”

Abbas’ advisor and Supreme Shari’ah Judge Mahmoud Al-Habbash delivers Friday sermon in the presence of Mahmoud Abbas:

“The [Israeli] violations, arrogance, recklessness, stupidity and foolishness will lead to what we fear - outbreak of a religious war between them [Israelis] and all Muslims... If [war] breaks out, it will not be confined to Palestine’s borders, nor to those of the Middle East. It may spread to the entire world. Wherever there are Muslims, there will be confrontations. Al-Aqsa is a part of the religion, creed and faith of every Muslim, so he will never accept any violation or any attack against it, or any desecration of its sanctity, or any non-Muslim sovereignty over even a millimeter of its land and the land of Jerusalem.”

All this is waqf and kharaj land (i.e., land belonging to Muslims) and no one is permitted to sell it or negotiate over it or forfeit it. It is ours and will remain ours. Note: Islam's Prophet Muhammad is said to have ridden during his Night Journey from Mecca to "al aqsa mosque", i.e., "the farthest mosque" (Quran, Sura 17), and there tied his miraculous flying steed named Al-Buraq to a "stone" or a "rock." (Jami` at-Tirmidhi, Book 47, Hadith 3424). In the 1920's, Arab Mufti Haj Amin Al-Husseini decided to identify the Western Wall of the Temple in Jerusalem as that "rock" or "stone," and since then Muslims refer to the Western Wall as the "Al-Buraq Wall."

“The Prophet Muhammad was the one who commanded us, and we obey him. Allah has chosen us, and Praise be to Allah for this choice. He has chosen us to live in Jerusalem and its environs, and to stand against [the enemy], protest against him, carry out Ribat (religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic) against him, and defend what belongs to the religion and the nation. We will protect the first direction of prayer, the second Mosque, the third Sanctuary after the other two Holy Sanctuaries (Mecca and Medina), the site of Muhammad’s Night Journey and the cradle of Christ. We will protect the land of the prophets from the enemies of the prophets. We will protect the land of the Apostles from the enemies of the Apostles. The campaign being waged in Jerusalem today – I am telling you, brothers – I think it is the final chapter. The final chapter after which our banners will be raised, with the aid of the one, exalted and omnipotent Allah, over the towers of the muezzin of Jerusalem, the churches of Jerusalem, the domes of Jerusalem, and its hills, mountains, alleys and houses.”

“Today, the protection and defense of Al-Aqsa, the efforts and the Jihad – Jihad by means of the body and Jihad by means of supply – for Al-Aqsa are a personal religious obligation [Arabic: fard ayn] for every Muslim man and woman from one end of the land to the other…We see a crazy and insane war being waged against the holiest place for the Muslims in Palestine: the Al-Aqsa Mosque… If this escalation continues – and we have warned, the President [Mahmoud Abbas] has warned of this [possibility] – it may lead to a religious war.... A religious war – to put it simply, that is – every Israeli would become a target for every Muslim from America to Japan, everywhere in the world, from all parts of the world. Every Muslim will feel that his religion and faith are being targeted, and that one of his holy places – the most important of his holy places – is being targeted. By whom? By these Israelis. These Israelis are [our] enemies and have become targets, because they are Israelis, for no other reason. The world’s Arabs and Muslims are the ones who will engage in direct confrontation [with Israel] on the material, operational and practical [level]. That is, you will be at war with a billion and a half Muslims…And this religious war will not be confined to Palestine. As I said, it may well [spread] to America, to Washington itself, to Europe, Asia, Africa. The fire of this war will reach every place in the world...”

Abbas' advisor on terror murders: "We are behind them in every movement, in every action and every deed"

Supreme Shari'ah Judge and Abbas' advisor, Mahmoud Al-Habbash:
“First of all, allow me to say that we kiss every forehead, every hand and even every foot that carries out Ribat (religious conflict/ war over land claimed to be Islamic) at the Al-Aqsa Mosque and in Jerusalem... I am not talking about strengthening their resolve; I am talking about participating in their resolve... We are behind them. The leadership is with them. A few days ago, President [Mahmoud Abbas] greeted them, reinforced them and requested more Ribat from them. This statement may have angered the Israelis and the occupation, that the President is inciting the Palestinians from Jerusalem to [perform] Ribat. Yes, we are inciting the people in Jerusalem to [perform] Ribat. Ribat means to protect and to hold on to your ground. We are with them in every movement, in every action and every deed, and we welcome what they are doing at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

“Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that the complete closing of the Al-Aqsa Mosque for the first time [since 1967] was planned by the official establishment of the occupation state. In addition, he said that ‘the claim of the attempted murder of the extremist Yehuda Glick, who engineered the daily invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s plazas and calls for the construction of the alleged Temple over the ruins of the Mosque, was the excuse needed to carry out this premeditated plan to divide Al-Aqsa and permit the Jews to pray in it just like the Muslims. This constitutes the first step toward the complete Judaization [of the Mosque] and toward the banning of Muslims from going to it.’”

In addition, in a statement to the press made today, Sunday, he demanded the boycotting of all Palestinian stores that refuse to comply with the call for the boycott. He noted that boycotting [Israeli products] was a religious, national and moral duty, and that it was one of the legitimate means of resistance, guaranteed by all [international] laws and conventions, to achieve our people’s goals and force the Israel occupation to end its brutal aggression against the Gaza Strip and to accede immediately to the demands of our people… He demanded that the preachers in the mosques and on the local media outlets act to explain the importance of the boycott, and to advertise local products. Abbas advisor opposes law allowing both Jews and Muslims to pray on Temple Mount
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 8, 2014
Official PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon from the Al-Tashrifat Mosque in the presidential compound in Ramallah. The sermon was delivered by Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs. He mentions the “physical division and [division] according to time,” referring to a law proposed in May 2013 and currently being reviewed by the Israeli Parliament, that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount. The law seeks to implement separate prayer times for Muslims and Jews at the site.
Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs: “Our goal is Jerusalem… the occupation perhaps wanted to take advantage of our and the world’s preoccupation with the aggression against Gaza, in order to further the scheme of dividing the Al-Aqsa Mosque according to time, between those who have the right and the foreigners, who have no right to even a single grain of our occupied land or of Jerusalem.
In effect, the battle is here, at the symbol of our existence, the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and Gaza is paying the price for Jerusalem… Our goal must remain the expulsion of this occupation and the establishment of a free and independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. Therefore, the Palestinian leadership’s position is that if Israel acts to violate the Palestinian right at the Al-Aqsa Mosque by the so-called physical division and [division] according to time, we will be exempt from everything – negotiations, agreements, everything. Then we will not be bound by anything, and will have a position that might shake the earth beneath their feet.”

Note: The “aggression against Gaza” that Habbash mentions in his statement refers to Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza.

During a conference in Ramallah, Al-Habbash called for the Arab and Islamic nation and the world to act immediately to save Al-Aqsa and halt the occupation’s plots… [PA Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories] Sheikh Muhammad Hussein emphasized that non-Muslims have no right to interfere in the affairs of Al-Aqsa. ‎     “Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme ‎Shari’ah Judge and the President’s ‎‎[Mahmoud Abbas’] Advisor on Religious ‎and Islamic Affairs, condemned the flying ‎of a small plane equipped with a camera ‎over the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque by a ‎settler. He described this as a step toward ‎‎[the mosque’s] bombing.‎
The Supreme Shari’ah Judge explained ‎that the plot to bomb the blessed Al-Aqsa ‎‎[Mosque] using a remote control plane ‎bearing large quantities of explosives, or ‎with a small plane piloted by a Jewish ‎suicide bomber, exists in the thought and ‎schemes of Jewish extremist groups. This ‎has been confirmed by the Israeli media in ‎recent years. ‎
Al-Habbash said that the danger hanging ‎over the Al-Aqsa Mosque obligates the ‎international community and the Arab and ‎Islamic world to intervene urgently and ‎quickly, in order to force the Israeli ‎occupation authorities to halt their crimes ‎against the places holy to Islam in ‎Palestine, especially the blessed Al-Aqsa ‎Mosque. He reiterated his call to Arabs and ‎Muslims in the world to visit the Holy City ‎and the holy places more frequently, in ‎order to protect them from the occupation’s ‎schemes to obliterate its [Jerusalem’s] ‎landmarks and judaize it.”‎
PA minister: "We have been on this land for 5,000 years"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, May 16, 2014
Official PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon from the Khaled Bin Al-Walid Mosque in Ein Munjid. The sermon was delivered by PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash.
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: "We have been on this land for 5,000 years, perhaps the Palestinian nation itself. Of course, over the course of all these years and long centuries, for over 5,000 years, Many empires and nations came to this land, to Jerusalem, one after the other, They came and went, lived here for a certain period of time, and then left. But the essential substance that remained -- like the rocks of this land, like the grains of sand of this land, like the water of this land, like the air of this land, like the olive tree of this land -- the essential substance that stayed is the Palestinian people. There was no period in history without the presence of the Palestinian people on this land. We are the salt of this earth, we are its essence, we are its air and water and we will never leave it. Many transients left and will leave... This land is ours. The Nakba (i.e., "the catastrophe," Palestinian term for establishment of State of Israel), believe me, the Nakba will pass, just as the others who passed. The foreigners, the imperialism of the Crusaders, lived here for more than 92 years, and then scattered and left. The Tatars came and then left. Others came and left and the land remained with its people, its sons. The Palestinians remained in Palestine, and they will stay until Allah inherits the earth."

Abbas rep: Palestinian presence in Jerusalem is 5000 years old, Israel threatens the city's Islamic-Christian identity
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, May 13, 2014
“The talks at the International Conference for the Support of Jerusalem, organized by the UN, the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and the Turkish Foreign Ministry, began in the Turkish capital, Ankara, yesterday [May 12, 2014], with the participation of PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ representative, [PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash…
In the speech [given in the name] of the President [Abbas], Al-Habbash asserted that Palestinian presence in Jerusalem dates back over 5,000 years, and that the Palestinians are the only permanent element in Jerusalem, while the others came and went. Al-Habbash described the grave dangers threatening Jerusalem under the Israeli occupation – despite the fact that nobody in the world recognizes Israel’s sovereignty over it. He called on all powers, parties and governments to cooperate in defending Jerusalem and protecting its Islamic-Christian identity.”

Official PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon from the Al-Tashrifat Mosque in the presidential compound in Ramallah. The sermon was delivered by PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash. The audience included PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and PA Finance Minister Jawad Naji.
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “Our rights are non-negotiable and we state them clearly. We want a real state with clear borders, with Jerusalem as its capital – and hear [me] well: Jerusalem as its capital, not with its capital in Jerusalem; its capital is the whole of Jerusalem, all of Jerusalem – who ever wishes [otherwise], let them wish [otherwise] and whoever opposes, let them oppose, in spite of them. Jerusalem will be nothing other than ours, or there will be no peace…
Forming one government for one people, one authority, one state, with one leadership and one weapon; with one decision that will lead, in a few months’ time, to free elections, in which the Palestinian people will state its will…
[The new unity government] will concentrate the administrative decisions (i.e., all internal affairs) of the Palestinian government and the Palestinian people under one umbrella, one authority, one weapon and one security [establishment], which will protect the rights of the Palestinian people and the dignity of the Palestinian person.”
PA minister: Israel attempts to "Judaize" Jerusalem, plans to build the "alleged Third Temple" in place of Al-Aqsa
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 15, 2014
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that since Israel occupied Jerusalem, it has been working to extend control over it and alter its landmarks, in order to Judaize it and put an end to the Arab presence in it…
In a statement to the press yesterday [April 14, 2014], Al-Habbash said… that the Israeli establishment is seeking to fulfill its dream, with the aim of building what it refers to as the alleged Third Temple in place of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, and of completely altering the heritage and culture of the city and its Islamic light . This has become evident in the wake of the series of steps [it has taken] to Judaize [the city], the increase in the number of daily, official invasions [of the Al-Aqsa Mosque], and the intensification and expansion of their media campaign regarding the need to build the alleged Temple.”

The PA considers any presence of Jews on the Temple Mount an "invasion." However, all visitors are subject to rigorous checks by Israeli security personnel before being granted access to the Temple Mount.

They are an inseparable part of this national Palestinian movement and one of its authentic elements."

PA minister accuses Israel of planning to destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque and build Temple
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 7, 2014
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash emphasized that the continuing settlement and Judaization of the holy city [Jerusalem], the attacks on its holy sites, the escalating Israeli aggression against Jerusalem, the falsifying of its history with the aim of erasing its cultural, human and historical heritage, and the demographic and geographic changes in the city are all moves that are null and void according to international law, the decisions of the international institutions, and the Geneva and Hague Conventions for the Protection of Cultural Property.
In addition, he warned again of the danger of the racist Israeli violations being planned against [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], the Ibrahimi Mosque (Cave of the Patriarchs), and the rest of our people’s holy sites, all of which confirm that Israel’s aim is to tighten its control over [the] Al-Aqsa [Mosque], in preparation for destroying it and building their alleged Temple.”

PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “In the occupation state (i.e., Israel), they are talking about a tale, about a lie and [the] insane [idea] of extending Israeli sovereignty to the Al-Aqsa Mosque. What sovereignty is this? Whoever told you we even recognize your existence in Jerusalem? Whoever said we recognize your right to even a single millimeter of the land of Jerusalem? Who said this? You even talk about [having] sovereignty over our hearts, over our faith, over our religion. Who said this? Who can imagine such insanity? This insanity will not end well. It will not end well; it will not lead to anything good. They must understand that the Al-Aqsa Mosque is not a red line. PA minister: Western Wall "belongs exclusively to Muslims"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Feb. 21, 2014

PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash:‎ ‎“This is our land and we will not leave our land. ‎Our Al-Aqsa Mosque – no one has the right – no one has the right to a single millimeter of it. The ‎entire Al-Aqsa Mosque is a pure Islamic-Palestinian right. It is not permissible or acceptable that even a ‎single millimeter of it will be ruled, dominated or seized by these usurping terrorist settlers... The right ‎to pray at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs exclusively to Muslims, exclusively to Muslims... The ‎Al-Aqsa Mosque with its courtyards, its colonnades, its stone benches, its domes, its trees, its walls, ‎includes the Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount), especially the Al-Buraq ‎Wall... Our land is our land. Our Jerusalem is our Jerusalem. Our Al-Aqsa is our Al-Aqsa. The names will ‎not change. The identity will not change. The place will not change. The Al-Aqsa Mosque will remain ‎the Al-Aqsa Mosque until the Hour [of Resurrection]. We ask Allah the Almighty to watch over it, ‎protect it and liberate it.”‎
Deviation from “sermon topic demanded by the Ministry” only permitted if preacher can “convince” minister

Official PA TV program Topic of the Day hosted PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash.
PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “We determined more than four years ago that the [Friday] sermon would have a unified theme - not that the sermon [itself] would be unified. There’s a difference between the two things. For example, [in a sermon] about the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the importance of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, the preacher can decide how to express the content of this sermon. Apart from this, if [the preacher has decided] there is a social, human or national issue more important than the sermon topic demanded by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, he can change it… he only needs to convince me that the topic he has chosen is more important than the one we chose; he shouldn’t say: ‘this came from the Ministry of Religious Affairs, I don’t want to listen to them.’ You are a clerk, after all.”

It has been said, ‘Where are they, Messenger of Allah?’ He said, ‘They are in Jerusalem and its surroundings.’ This land has given us this honor, and therefore, we are prepared to give it the most precious of our possessions - even [our] life and blood, so that it will remain pure, so that it will remain honorable and noble. Official PA TV Live broadcast an event honoring released prisoners in the Salfit District.
The event was attended by PA Minister of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karake, PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Fatah Central Committee member Jamal Muhaisen and Salfit District Governor Issam Abu Bakr.
Released prisoners Fahim Sarhan, Mustafa Al-Haj and Bilal Damra were honored at the event.

PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “Brothers, honored ones, who we are proud to be honored by today by honoring you, peace be upon you. All words are dwarfed when standing in the presence of such people. Those who, one day, voluntarily gave up part of their lives. And it is possible that while they were waging the battles of honor, resistance and struggle, they were prepared to give up their whole life for Palestine.”

Note: Mustafa Al-Haj murdered Frederick Rosenfeld while he was hiking near the city of Ariel in the West Bank (June 17, 1989). He was released in August 2013 as one of 104 prisoners released by Israel, which was the PA's precondition for renewing negotiations.
Bilal Damra was serving a life sentence for participating in the murder of Frederick Rosenfeld, who was killed while he was hiking near the city of Ariel in the West Bank (June 17, 1989). Damra was released in December 2013 as one of the 104 terrorists whom Israel agreed to release to fulfill the PA's precondition for renewing negotiations.
Fahim Sarhan was serving a life sentence for committing an act of terrorism against Israel. PMW has been unable to verify the details of his crime. He was released in October 2011 as part of the Shalit prisoner exchange deal brokered between the Israeli government and Hamas. In that deal, Israel released 1,027 Palestinian prisoners in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas for more than 5 years.

We say to them: ‘The venue for resistance and Jihad is not the Yarmouk refugee camp. Whoever wants resistance, whoever wants Jihad, the direction for Jihad is well-known and clear. Everyone knows it. I don’t think that there is anyone who doesn’t know where Jihad is supposed to take place. [Applause from the audience] I don’t think that there is anyone who doesn’t know to where we should direct efforts or where to concentrate the masses. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t know this. Those who send young people to Syria or elsewhere to die for a misdirected cause must stop and understand that Jerusalem is still waiting. Jerusalem is the direction, Jerusalem is the address. [Abbas and audience applaud.] A compass that does not point to Jerusalem, Muhammad has nothing to do with it. Put an end to your ignorance, and recognize that you [those fighting in Syria] are nothing more than small tools in a game [controlled by] malicious hands that are running a filthy game to crush the Ummah (Islamic Nation) and diminish it, and deflect the compass, away from its true direction.”

PA Minister of Religion promotes “victory or Martyrdom” in Friday sermon
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Dec. 20, 2013
PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon delivered by PA Minister of Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash from the Al-Yarmouk Mosque in Ramallah:
“We know for certain that as long as we [adhere] to the truth, we will face challenges and be made a target – as individuals and as groups – we know this for certain. Nonetheless, we are also confident in the words of Allah: ‘Say, ‘Do you await for us except one of the two best things’ (Quran, Sura 9:52, translation Sahih International). What do you expect, enemies, cowards (indistinct word), what do they expect will happen to us? ‘One of the two best things.’
Brothers, Allah willing, only one of the two best things will happen to us – victory or Martyrdom (Shahada) – and what a good fate this is, what a good level is this – victory or Martyrdom…
I swear in a God, beside whom there is no other God, that the end of the tyranny and the tyrants is near. This occupation and its growths and creations that wish to spread corruption in our land… We tell them all, the occupation and the occupation’s instruments and any who serve the occupation: ‘Await for us except one of the two best things’ – we, Allah willing, [will be] either Martyrs or victors on our land. […]
We ask for victory more than we ask for life. We ask for the strengthening of our people in this good and blessed land.”

We are its inheritors and it belongs to us and to no one else. Visit Jerusalem. We, as Palestinians, Arabs and Muslims, must visit the Al-Buraq Wall. The Al-Buraq Wall (i.e., the Western Wall of the Temple Mount) is an authentic part of the Al-Aqsa Mosque only... It [the Wall] is our right, it is our permanent right. It is part of our Al-Aqsa [Mosque], without intending to harm the rights of others in any way, and without harming the rights of others. Freedom of worship in our Jerusalem is guaranteed to all... PA Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “After prophecy and righteousness there is no status Allah has exalted more than Shahada (Martyrdom)... ‘And think not of those who have been killed in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they are alive (and) are provided sustenance from their Lord.’ Allah forbade us to consider them [the Shahids] (as dead or to speak of them as being dead… The Shahid has merit with Allah, a merit that no one else has... No one - not even the righteous - yearns to return to this world after death. Only Shahids. Why? Because they see the great honor Allah has prepared for them. One of them aspired to return to this world in order to be killed again, in order to die as a Shahid yet again...  After all he saw in Paradise, he wanted to return and be killed [again] in order to taste the pain of death a second time...
Allah Himself is conveying to us the message from the Shahids. The prophets convey Allah’s message and Allah conveys the message of the Shahids. What kindness!
‘The Shahid - his sins are forgiven with the first gush of his blood from his wound... The Shahid advocates on behalf of 70 members of his family, and saves them all from hell...'
When they threatened Yasser Arafat, [he said] ‘You threaten me with death? I yearn to die! I come only to it; I seek only it.’
We will never reach the level of the prophets. We won’t. So let us reach the level of the Shahids."

When he was dying, he said to [his wife] Aisha: ‘I feel the same pain I felt from the poison that I ate at Khaibar (Jewish village).’ Poison that he ate at Khaibar. He continued to feel the pain until he died. ‘I feel the same pain I felt from the poison that I ate at Khaibar...’ Be satisfied, oh mighty one, oh Martyr Arafat, that you were killed the same way Allah’s Messenger was killed... PA minister: PA agreements are modeled after Muhammad's Hudaybiyyah Peace Treaty
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, July 19, 2013
PA Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash:
"We hate war. We don't want war... The Palestinian leadership's sense of responsibility towards its nation made it take political steps about 20 years ago (i.e., signing the Oslo Accords). Despite the controversy, despite much criticism and much opposition by some, it brought us to where we are today: We have a [Palestinian] Authority and the world recognizes the [Palestinian] state.
All this never would have happened through Hamas' impulsive adventure, but only through the wisdom of the leadership, conscious action, consideration, and walking the right path, which leads to achievement, exactly like the Prophet [Muhammad] did in the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah, even though some opposed it...
The hearts of the Prophet's companions burned with anger and fury. The Prophet said: 'I'm the Messenger of Allah and I will not disobey Him.' This is not disobedience, it is politics. This is crisis management, situation management, conflict management...
Allah called this treaty a clear victory...
Omar ibn Al-Khattab said: 'Messenger of Allah, is this a victory? Is this logical? Is this victory? We are giving up and going back, and not entering Mecca. Is that a victory?' The Prophet said: 'Yes, it is a victory.'
In less than two years, the Prophet returned and based on this treaty, he conquered Mecca. This is the example, this is the model."

PA Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “On the contrary, what [Mufti] Haj Amin Al-Husseini warned of has become reality. There is a planned action that is getting worse, to Judaize Jerusalem and take it out of [both] its human and cultural historical course and place it in a distorted and false history by claiming that it is an Israeli city and a Jewish city etc. Jerusalem was and will remain the city of all believers. Its Arab and Muslim identity endures, is rooted and is prominent throughout history and no one can change it.”

Note: Haj Amin Al-Husseini - Grand Mufti of Jerusalem at the time of the British mandate, and spiritual and a political leader of the local Arab population. He strongly opposed Zionism and was behind riots and attacks on Jews. During World War II he actively collaborated with Nazi Germany, meeting Adolf Hitler personally and recruiting Muslims for the Nazi army.
PA Minister: “Armed resistance” (i.e., violence) not possible because Arabs lack military power
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, May 13, 2013
PA TV program Religion and Politics:
Host Moaz Shraideh: “There are some who propose launching a resistance in the Palestinian areas, in the ‘West Bank’ in quotation marks.”
Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash: “What resistance?”
PA TV host: “Armed resistance. There were some who demanded that you initiate the armed resistance to liberate the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and enough with the speeches etc.”
PA Minister Al-Habbash: “Let’s assume, for argument’s sake, let’s assume this. Let’s say we remove all restrictions from the ‘armed resistance’ in quotation marks. From where will the resistance get weapons? From where will it get money in order to fight? From where? Do we have factories to manufacture this?”
PA TV host: “You’ll find a way.”
PA Minister Al-Habbash: “We don’t need to find a way. There is a [Muslim] nation with a billion and a half [people]. We, the entire Palestinian nation, what percentage are we of this nation? And just as I am responsible for Jerusalem, the Saudi Arabian, the Egyptian, the Jordanian, the Iraqi, the Indonesian, and the Moroccan are all responsible for Jerusalem. I resist as much as I can. This resistance can [only] reach the popular civilian resistance’s limit because I don’t have military power.”

“The Palestinian prisoners (i.e., in Israeli prisons for security offenses and terror related crimes)… are paying and have paid a heavy price for defending justice. They are those who are worthy of receiving a Nobel Peace Prize. The Palestinian prisoners are worthy of this prize because they defend justice, defend peace for their nations, for the world’s nations and all the nations on earth. They are not criminals, they demand justice, demand peace, demand humanity, they defend human dignity…”

“Brother believers, our struggle and our Jihad will go on. The Palestinian struggle, fighting, and Jihad will not be stopped until our wish and our hope are realized and the State of Palestine becomes fact, just as it has now become a fact according to international law. From a legal point of view, Palestine has become a state. In practice, this state must take shape and be firmly established on the ground. The Palestinian struggle will continue, now, through popular, peaceful resistance that has become the Palestinian consensus.”

PA TV broadcast the Friday sermon delivered by PA Minister for Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash at the Tashrifat Mosque in the PA presidential compound, Ramallah on Dec. 21, 2012. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and the Secretary General of his office, Al-Tayeb Abd Al-Rahim, were in the congregation.
Habbash: “We say to the whole world, we say to the occupation government, to whoever supports the occupation government to whoever defends the occupation government in international forums: As Allah lives, we are continuing what we do; we are continuing our Ribat (religious conflict to defend Islamic land). We are continuing our Jihad. We are continuing with our resolve. We are continuing to hold on, until Allah grants us victory, until Allah grants victory to our cause, until our Jerusalem is returned to us, until our state is established, or until we die. As Allah lives, this is one of two good things: Victory or Shahada (Martyrdom death for Allah). There is no third option. Either victory or Martyrdom death.”
PA minister: Jews have no connection to Western Wall, which is "the sole right of Palestinians"
Source: WAFA news agency, Dec. 17, 2012
"Minister for Religious Affairs Mahmoud Al-Habbash said that Jerusalem and all its features, its geography, and its Islamic and Christian holy sites, and this includes the Western Wall, are the sole right of Palestinians. (The Arabic throughout the text for the Western Wall is Al-Buraq Wall - Ed.) In a press release he stressed that [Israeli Prime Minister] Netanyahu's recent statements concerning the occupation's (i.e., Israel's) ownership of the Western Wall are nothing but nonsense and an attempt to manipulate both history and geography, and are worthless from a religious, historical, or legal point of view. (See Netanyahu's exact quote below - Ed.) Al-Habbash made clear that Netanyahu's statements about Jerusalem and the Western Wall lack the elementary scientific basis for approaching history which has always proven Islamic ownership of the Western Wall... that no person besides Muslims ever used it as a place of worship, throughout all of history, until the ominous Balfour Declaration was issued in 1917."

PA Minister of Religious Affairs encourages Ribat in Friday sermon
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 17, 2012
Friday sermon delivered by Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash. In audience: PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas; Secretary General of the Presidential Office, Al-Tayeb Abd Al-Rahim; Jibril Rajoub.
Al-Habbash: "This [Al-Aqsa] mosque will remain a mosque. We will not abandon this soil; we will not abandon this land; we will not abandon this mosque. We will remain in it, we will live in it and we will die in it. We will resist through our presence upon our land. We will resist through Ribat (religious conflict/war to defend Islamic land) and resolve; we will resist by building, and we will resist by every means... Ribat upon this land is an honor… Yesterday, this occupation perpetrated a crime. It was carried out by one of the members of the terror movements, who are referred to as the so-called 'settlers'. These settlers are all – all of them – terrorists; terrorists in the full sense of the word. Every settler who lives upon Palestinian land, who steals Palestinian land, is a terrorist."
Minister of Religious Affairs: The "owners of Jerusalem" are the Muslims and Christians
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 10, 2012
Friday sermon, speaker: Minister of Religious Affairs, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash
Present in audience: President Mahmoud Abbas; Tayeb Abd Al-Rahim, Secretary General of the Presidential Office.

Al-Habbash: "The Arabs and Muslims, all of them… are invited to come to Jerusalem, to come to Al-Aqsa [Mosque], in order to tell the whole world: This mosque is ours; we will not abandon it, nor will we abandon the Palestinian people in its struggle [against] the schemes to harm the Al-Aqsa Mosque. In its struggle against the schemes and the plans, which aim to alter the landmarks of Jerusalem and the landmarks of the Al-Aqsa Mosque… Israel does not want the Muslims and the Arabs in Jerusalem. Are we acceding to what it wants? Are we acceding to its [Israel’s] desire, to separate Jerusalem from its owners? The owners of Jerusalem are all the Muslims and all the Christians in the east and the west of the country. Jerusalem is today in great danger… A few days ago we heard some nonsense that has no legal or religious value. It was said by one of the Israeli MPs who wants to propose a law to divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque between Muslims and Jews. Simply and firmly [I say] – this is a recipe for blood, fire, and war… No one can imagine that a single centimeter of the Al-Aqsa Mosque will belong to non-Muslims, not even a single millimeter, not even a breath in the Al-Aqsa Mosque belongs to someone who is not Muslim… These calls and statements are a great danger. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is in danger. These [MPs] are trying to claim a false right to this mosque for themselves … Anyone who wants to harm the Al-Aqsa Mosque will burn himself and destroy himself… These worthless calls, uttered by some of the worthless Israeli MPs – we will trample them. They have no value, they are not even worth the dust that our feet tread upon anywhere in this world."
PA Minister of Religion: Israel will pass like chaff in the wind
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, June 29, 2012
Friday sermon by Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash. Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is in the audience.
Al-Habbash emphasizes that the believing Muslim should never give up or despair, but should stand resolute in the face of difficulty, because anything else is not complete faith in Allah:

"Al-Aqsa will be Al-Aqsa only, and Palestine will belong only to its people. That's the end of the road. That's what we must be certain of, to believe in… We, Allah be praised, are not heretics and not misled; rather, we follow the path of Muhammad, Allah willing. Until Allah has His word – we will continue in this. We base ourselves on justice, we are resolute upon our land, and adhere to our rights. [Even if] they (i.e., Israel) burn our fields, cut down our trees, burn our mosques, destroy our homes, arrest, kill – we remain here, and they will depart; they will leave. Upon this land there shall remain only that which is useful to people, while the chaff passes with the wind."
PA Minister's different message to foreign audience: Conflict is not religious
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Dec. 18, 2011
"Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Al-Habbash, met yesterday at his office with the Norwegian Minister of Church Affairs…
Habbash noted that the Palestinians believe in religious co-existence, love, and tolerance between people, to bring about peace and justice. He said that the disagreement between Palestinians and Israelis is not a religious one, but rather a disagreement whose reason is the [Israeli] occupation and settlement on the Palestinian territories. He also said that security and stability would not be attained in the Middle East unless the occupation was removed, settlement stopped, and an independent Palestinian state established."
PA Minister: Israel is using Eilat terror attack to serve government interests
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 19, 2011
On August 18, 2011, several Palestinian terrorists armed with rifles and bombs carried out a series of coordinated terror attacks near Eilat killing 6 civilians, a soldier and a security officer. Israel responded to the attacks by targeting the leaders of the organization behind the terror attack, the Popular Resistance Committees, killing 5 members of this terror organization and a child in an air strike on Gaza.
PA TV broadcast an interview over the phone with Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Minister of Religious Affairs, on the subject of the attack and Israel’s response:
"Israel [in its response] is trying to export its crisis... It has found refuge in the situation in which we now find ourselves in the wake of the operation (i.e., terror attack) that took place in Eilat; it has found refuge in it. Now it is trying to escalate the crisis through an attack on the Gaza Strip and attacking civilians in Gaza, in order to try to turn the situation around, in an attempt to confound the internal Palestinian scene and the international political scene, thinking that this might be [a possibility for] escaping the realization [of the Palestinian state] at the UN."

PA Minister of Religious Affairs: Mosques should only convey messages of "tolerance, love, compassion"

PA Minister of Religious Affairs: “We are proud of this [our prisoner’s] crime” – “love for Palestine”
PA TV transmits Friday sermon at the Al-Tashrifat Mosque in the presidential compound, Ramallah, delivered by Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Minister of Religious Affairs:
"We deal with suffering caused by the occupation (i.e., Israel), which holds thousands of Palestinian prisoners – thousands of prisoners, who are moved from place to place in the occupation's prisons; perhaps hundreds of thousands of prisoners, who have been moved from place to place in the occupation's prisons – they have committed just one transgression, they have only one charge [against them], and how good and how honorable is that charge: resistance to the occupation, the effort to be rid of the occupation, national action for the sake of Palestine, for the sake of independence and for the sake of liberty. That is the great charge, that is the charge which we are proud of. Yes. We are proud of this charge, and we are proud of this crime, if they refer to it as a crime. If our love for Palestine is a crime, if our resistance to the occupation is a crime, if our resolve in our land is a crime, then how good and how honorable is this charge! We are proud of this charge… Our resolve does not mean submission; our resolve does not mean foregoing; our resolve does not mean acceptance of the situation as it is. We do not accept this situation. We are acting to change it, and we are acting to be rid of it. Our Jihad for Allah continues until the day of Resurrection; our resolve in this land continues until Allah rules on the matter with certainty. If we have accepted negotiations and peace solutions, this does not mean that we are relinquishing our rights – not in negotiations and not outside of them. There are red lines, which all the decisions of the Palestinian people and all the decisions of
PA Ministry warns of "electronic Judaization" campaign falsifying history of the Al-Buraq Wall [Western Wall]
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Mar. 14, 2011
“Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Habbash, said that the Islamic holy places and houses of worship have been subjected, over the past 2 months, to more than 30 attacks carried out by the occupation [Israel] and its settlers.
In a report published yesterday on the subject of Israeli attacks and violations against sites holy to Islam, houses of worship, and Waqf [Islamic Trust] land during January-February, the Ministry of Religious Affairs stated that these attacks included defilement of the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas and invasions into them, targeting of Islamic heritage, digging of tunnels and preventing the call to prayer at the Ibrahimi Mosque [Cave of the Patriarchs].
The report noted that Jewish organizations had embarked, on Jan. 3, 2011, on a campaign of electronic Judaization, in an attempt to falsify the history of the Al-Buraq wall [Western Wall]. The so-called ‘Western Wall Heritage Foundation’ launched a worldwide electronic service for the i-Phone, making it possible to watch the goings-on at the Al-Buraq wall in real time.
He stated that this service made it possible for the viewer to take a virtual tour of the Al-Buraq tunnel and the tunnel of the western wall of the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and noted that there is also a service [providing] a worldwide compass which points in the direction of Jerusalem, in order to hold Jewish prayer in the direction of the alleged Temple.”
PA Minister of Religious Affairs glorifies female Martyrs and prisoners who engage in Jihad
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Mar. 11, 2011
Minister of Religious Affairs, Mahmoud Habbash, Friday sermon:
“Look at Palestinian women. Have they lagged behind men in anything? Have they lagged behind in the struggle, in Jihad? Have they lagged behind in Ribat? Have they lagged behind in [violent] resistance? The existence of female prisoners is proof that my words are correct. Our Shahidas (Martyrs), from among our daughters and mothers and the women of Palestine, are proof of what I am saying. The women have not lagged behind, and in our society no door is closed to them. All doors are open, so that women may participate together with men in all spheres of life: in action, in Jihad, in resistance, in politics, in the legal system…
Women’s liberation will happen [when they are] shoulder-to-shoulder with men in building society, in liberating Palestine, in building identity, in consolidating values, in educating the younger generation, in creating men. That is the woman’s role.’”

Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 27, 2010

They want to see the Arabs and the Muslims at their side; they want to see all the Arabs and all the Muslims coming to Jerusalem, emphasizing its status and its identity, and telling the usurpers (i.e., Israel): ‘You have no place here.’ Telling the occupiers, ‘This is not your place, but ours. This is not your city, but ours.’ Our religion demands this. Our faith demands this of us.”
PA Minister of Religious Affairs: Violence and war still an option
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Aug. 20, 2010
Friday sermon by Mahmoud Al-Habbash, PA Minister of Religious Affairs, at the mosque at Mahmoud Abbas’s offices in Ramallah. PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas was in the audience:
"Jerusalem is not just a city. Al-Aqsa is not just a mosque. Jerusalem is the key to peace, and Jerusalem can ignite a thousand and one wars. Unless the issue of Jerusalem is solved, so that it returns to its owners; unless Jerusalem will be Palestinian, as it was throughout history, the capital of the Palestinian state and the capital of the Palestinian people, the place which is the object of heartfelt longing and which all Muslims aspire to reach; unless Jerusalem is like that way, there is no peace. There is no peace without Jerusalem. There is no stability without Jerusalem. If Jerusalem is dishonored, if Jerusalem is disgraced, if [Jerusalem] is lost, it may leave the door open to all possibilities of struggle, all possibilities of war. The term 'war' cannot be erased from the lexicon of this region as long as Jerusalem is occupied, as long as Jerusalem is disgraced, as long as the residents of Jerusalem are being targeted. It's not possible; Jerusalem has to return to its owners. And we are its owners."

Statement by Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Minister of Religious Affairs, about PA responsibility for mosques and what goes on inside them as reported in the official PA daily from a press conference held at the governmental media center in Ramallah:
He emphasized that it is the Ministry which is unquestionably responsible for all activity within the mosques – the functioning, the centers for Quran study, the calls to prayer, and the sermons – and that the Ministry would not take lightly or be negligent in the fulfillment of its obligation. He noted that the religious lessons, Quran study and other activities going on in the mosques require prior approval by the Ministry.”

The problem between us and the Israelis is not a problem over religion or tenets of faith; it is not a religious problem or one concerning the fulfillment of religious ceremonies, but rather a problem with the occupation.”

He [PA Minister of Religious Affairs, Dr. Mahmoud Al-Habbash] clarified that Jerusalem is a part of our belief and our religion and taking Jerusalem lightly is taking our religion lightly…: ‘The position of the leadership is a firm position, just as our faith is firm. To make light of Jerusalem is to make light of our faith. Jerusalem is the capital of the Palestinian state. There will be no peace, nor stability in the region, without Jerusalem. It is not possible for anyone to sign a document relinquishing it.'”

"This is the obligation of our times, right now. We cannot fulfill other forms of the obligations. PA Minister of Religious Affairs: Allah commands religious war in Israel
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Feb. 12, 2010
It is a struggle between those whom Allah has chosen for Ribat and those who are trying to mutilate the land of Ribat."

Refugees left homes in 1948 because of Arab promises

Mahmoud Al-Habbash, Palestinian Journalist:
"The leaders and the elites promised us [refugees] at the beginning of the "Catastrophe" in 1948, that the duration of the exile will not be long, and that it will not last more than a few days or months, and afterwards the refugees will return to their homes, which most of them did not leave until they put their trust in those Arkuvian* [worthless] promises made by the leaders and the political elites. Afterwards, days passed, months, years and decades, and the promises were lost with the strain of the succession of events.."
[Note: The term "Arkuvian" is after Arkuv - a figure from Arab tradition - who was known for breaking his promises and for his lies.]
Op-ed in official PA daily supports suicide attacks against Israelis
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Nov. 9, 2006
Article by Mahmoud Al-Habbash in his regular column

Headline: "Fiction falls, and long live the truth"
"The truth can be told here, that it is not surprising that the Israelis carry out these massacres, for that is what they are like, as the Quran said: 'You will surely find the most intense of the people in animosity toward the believers [to be] the Jews and those who associate others with Allah.' (Sura 5:82)
But what is strange – and distasteful in light of all the criminal deeds [committed by] Israelis – is the sluggish Arab position and the international conspiracy that encourages and entices the criminals in Olmert's Nazi government to follow the footsteps of their predecessors, i.e. aggression against our people… This new Israeli criminal deed in Gaza will be – and moreover should be – the basis for natural Palestinian reactions whatever form and dimension they may take, because for every action there is a reaction. Daily Israeli attacks and crimes like these – must be met by Palestinian resistance in every manner presently possible, including suicide attacks, as is to be expected. That will require… informational and political stimuli… through a realistic informational campaign that will explain to the world that all Palestinian responses to Israeli aggression are no more than legitimate self-defense… so that Palestinian truth will vanquish Israeli fiction."
