PA and PLO launch campaign to nominate terrorist imprisoned for 5 life sentences for Nobel Peace Prize

"The national institutions that deal with the prisoners' issues and rights launched a national and international campaign yesterday [April 13, 2016], in cooperation with the [PA] Parliament (Legislative Council), in support of the candidacy of prisoner Marwan Barghouti (i.e., terrorist who orchestrated three shooting attacks in which 5 were murdered) for the Nobel Peace Prize, on the 15th anniversary of his abduction (i.e., he was arrested)…
At the press conference, Director of [PLO] Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs Issa Karake, Ramallah and El-Bireh District Governor Laila Ghannam, head of the Fatah parliamentary faction Azzam Al-Ahmad, Coordinator of the National and Islamic Forces in the Ramallah and El-Bireh District and Secretary of Foreign Relations of the Supreme Council for Monitoring Prisoners' Affairs Issam Bakr, and Mufti of Jerusalem and the Palestinian territories Sheikh Muhammad Hussein spoke one after the other, while Secretary-General of the People's Party and head of the Al-Badil list Bassam Al-Salhi gave a speech in the name of the national forces.
Karake said: 'The candidacy for the [Nobel] prize of a Palestinian prisoner who is in the occupation's prisons exposes the occupation, its lies, and its treatment of the prisoners as 'criminals', and constitutes a victory for the prisoners and the Palestinian cause.'

Mufti Hussein said that his [Barghouti's] candidacy constitutes a victory for our people’s just right to struggle for freedom and independence, and constitutes support for the prisoners' cause and their legal struggle for freedom and honor…
Likewise, he emphasized that this is a natural response to all of the Israeli measures and actions against the prisoners and to the fact that their [the prisoners’] legal standing and status as fighters have been denied them, and that the legality of their struggle against the occupation is not recognized …
In addition, Al-Salhi called to increase the efforts and widen the scope of the campaign through the launch of a popular campaign to gather as many signatures as possible in support of Marwan Barghouti's candidacy for the prize, out of an understanding of its significance in refuting the false Israeli version which attempts to define Barghouti and the prisoners as criminals."

Marwan Barghouti - serving 5 life sentences for orchestrating three shooting attacks that killed 5 people: one in Jerusalem (June 12, 2001, 1 killed), another in Givat Zeev near Jerusalem (Jan. 15, 2002, 1 killed), and one in Tel Aviv (March 5, 2002, 3 killed). When arrested in 2002, he headed the Tanzim (Fatah terror faction). After he was convicted and imprisoned, he was re-elected member of the Palestinian Authority parliament.
