Rewriting history
Heritage theft
Rewriting history
Rewriting the history of the Land of Israel in order to deny Israel's right to exist is central to Palestinian Authority (PA) policy. Long before it started the PA terror campaign (the "Intifada," 2000-2005), the PA was fighting a history war – erasing Jewish history and replacing it with a fabricated Palestinian history. This rewriting has two central goals:
1- Erase the Jewish nation's 3,000 year history in the Land of Israel;
2- Invent ancient Palestinian, Muslim and Arab histories in the land.

The goal of this historical revision as a political strategy was first expressed publicly at a conference of Palestinian historians in 1998, when rewriting history was linked to the political goal of denying Israel's right to exist:
"Dr. Yussuf Alzamili [Chairman History Department, Khan Yunis Educational College] called on all universities and colleges to write the history of Palestine and to guard it, and not to enable the [foreign] implants and enemies to distort it or to legitimize the existence of Jews on this land... [History lecturer Abu Amar] clarified that there is no connection between the ancient generation of Jews and the new generation." [Al-Ayyam, Dec. 4, 1998].

Erasing Jewish history in the land of Israel is followed by the PA’s invention of ancient and modern histories that support its political ideology and claim to the land of Israel. The Holocaust and other aspects of Jewish history are alternately denied, downplayed or distorted. Another distortion is to hide from Palestinians that Jesus was a Jew who lived in the Land of Judea/Israel. PA leaders repeatedly define Jesus as a Palestinian who preached Islam, thus denying not only Jewish history, but also the history and legitimacy of Christianity.

Citing numerous examples, this section will document that these and other historical revisions are an integral part of Palestinian policy and are used to create political ideology.
Heritage theft
The PA policy of rewriting history in order to deny Israel’s right to exist is expressed in different ways. As noted above, the PA erases Jewish history and fabricates an ancient Palestinian history in an attempt to delegitimize Israel’s claim to the land. Another expression of this PA policy is the accusation of heritage theft, in which Israel is said to steal Palestinian heritage and history. According to this logic, Israel has no heritage of its own in the land and must therefore resort to stealing Palestinian heritage in order to justify its claim to the land.

PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas himself propagated this libel, reported in the PA official daily:
"President Abbas emphasized… ‘We know that they (i.e., Israelis) are trying to change its landmarks, to change our land, and to build over our homes and over the graves of our people, in order to erase the traces of the Palestinian people, but they will not succeed.'” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Jan. 1, 2012]

The same accusation was made on PA TV by a newscaster reporting on a folkdance festival in the Ramallah district:
"[The dance groups] are directing a message to the entire world, that the Palestinian nation still retains its identity and its cultural heritage, while Israel attempts to steal this heritage." [PA TV (Fatah), July 15, 2011]

At the same time that the PA promotes the libel of Israeli heritage theft, the PA itself frequently claims Jewish history in the land of Israel as its own. Since the Palestinian Authority was established under the Oslo Accords in 1993, the PA has undertaken a rewriting of history which includes the misappropriation of Jewish history, artifacts, traditions, texts, as if they had a Palestinian historical connection.

In one striking example, the official PA paper claimed that a Hebrew shekel coin from 66 CE was in fact “an ancient Palestinian coin.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, March 4, 2012] The coin, with ancient Hebrew lettering that reads “Shekel of Israel [Year] 1,” can be seen above.

Similarly, a song broadcast on PA TV mimicked the Jewish biblical expression from Psalms, “If I forget thee, oh Jerusalem, may my right hand forget its skill” [Psalms 137:5]. The song appropriates Jewish longing for Jerusalem with lyrics that clearly imitate the Jewish biblical verse:
"May my right arm forget me, may my left arm forget me.
May the light of my eyes and the openings of songs forget me, if I forget Jerusalem."
[PA TV (Fatah), March 11, 2012]

This section documents the PA’s mimicking and expropriating of Jewish tradition as well as the libel that Israel steals Palestinian heritage in order to forge a “false” Jewish connection to the land:
PA government: Israel is "targeting the identity, heritage, and faith of the Palestinians in Jerusalem," which will "ignite a religious war"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, July 19, 2017
“[PA] Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah held the government of Israel – as the occupying power – fully responsible for the harm to the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque…
During the weekly government meeting led by him, which was held yesterday [July 18, 2017] in Ramallah, the prime minister warned against the consequences of the occupation government’s steps in Jerusalem, which began last Friday [July 14, 2017] with the closure of the Al-Aqsa Mosque (the Temple Mount was closed for two days and afterwards metal detectors were placed at the entrances to the site in response to a terror attack there in which 2 were murdered)… [The PA government] emphasized that what is happening constitutes blatant aggression and an Israeli plan that is targeting the identity, heritage, and faith of the Palestinians in Jerusalem, and their presence in the occupied holy city – something that is only liable to intensify the tensions in Jerusalem in particular and in the region in general, to lead to an explosion of the situation, and to ignite a religious war for whose disastrous consequences the government of Israel will be fully responsible.”

Israeli demand to remove monument to terrorist is part of conflict between "false Zionist narrative" and Palestinian "narrative" and "identity"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, June 25, 2017
Headline: “The Martyr Nazzal monument remains”

Excerpt of an op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, regular columnist for the official PA daily

“At the height of the heated conflict between the [Palestinian] national narrative and the false Zionist narrative that contradicts history and geography, the extremist Zionist leadership of Israel is attempting to ‘dissolve’ the national narrative by persecuting its symbols…  [Israel] will not stop with the removal of the Martyr Khaled [Nazzal (i.e., terrorist, responsible for murder of 31)] monument, but rather will continue to extort us regarding our identity, our names, our birthdates, and the livelihood of our prisoners and their relatives. Every time that we retreat before it in the name of the superficial argument of flexibility and cutting corners, it will persecute us until we turn into slaves of its colonialist narrative’s will and logic.”

PA Minister of Religious Affairs claims Israel desecrates Al-Aqsa, "Judaizes" Jerusalem, and "attempts to steal our heritage and culture"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Apr. 4, 2017
Headline: “Ida’is: 99 Israeli violations of freedom of worship”
“[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Ida’is warned against the dangers of the occupation’s actions at the Al-Aqsa Mosque…
The minister of religious affairs explained that those who are called ‘the alleged Temple organizations’ have strengthened their calls to invade the Al-Aqsa Mosque plazas (i.e., the Temple Mount) during the Hebrew Passover holiday and sacrifice Passover sacrifices there…
He said that the steps that the occupation government is carrying out have begun to move to the most dangerous stage for the future of the holy city [of Jerusalem] by giving a green light to the settlers and extremist Jews to enter the Al-Aqsa Mosque, to do as they will in its holy plazas and to carry out shameful acts that desecrate the sanctity of the site (See note below –Ed.)…
Ida’is explained that in the shadow of the Arab and Islamic silence and international conspiracy, the Zionist occupation authorities are continuing their plans to erode occupied Jerusalem and take all of the Islamic characteristics from it while using all of the arbitrary means to Judaize the city and expel the original [Arab] Jerusalem residents from it: taking control of the lands and establishing settlements on them, the continuation of the excavations under our blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque… and the many attempts to steal our heritage and culture – and this is not the first time: a Jewish ‘archaeologist’ attempted to steal a stone from the ancient Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

Guest on PA TV: Hebrew word "Gilboa" is "Arabic-Canaanite-Palestinian" name stolen by Israel
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Mar. 16, 2017
Official PA TV program Palestine This Morning, on the launching of the National Flower of Palestine – Gilboa Iris campaign, hosting Green Life Association Chairman Faisal Zakarneh

Green Life Association Chairman Faisal Zakarneh: “This is a flower that grows in the Gilboa Mountains (i.e., in northern Israel). At this opportunity, let me explain that Gilboa is an ancient Palestinian-Canaanite-Arabic word, and not Hebrew-Israeli. This needs to be clear. In our minds [the name Gilboa] is connected to the Gilboa Prison... but the occupier has always made us used to him using our language and stealing it and its Arabic-Canaanite-Palestinian names.”

Mount Gilboa has been the Hebrew name of the location since Biblical times, and notably appears in Samuel 1 Chapter 31 as the location where Saul, the first king of Israel, died in battle.

PA Ministry of Tourism Director-General of the Northern Districts (i.e., the West Bank) Ibrahim Al-Hafi: “The heritage that the Israelis are trying to steal, advance, and market as Israeli handicrafts – and in particular the Palestinian clothing, our Palestinian kitchen, our foods, and our traditional handicrafts – we must protect it [the heritage] and develop it.”
PA TV: Israel is “Judaizing” Palestine, committing acts of “forgery and robbery” against holy sites, and “steals our Canaanite heritage”

Official PA TV program The Occupied Capital, on heritage and folklore

Official PA TV host: “The Palestinian heritage refuses to undergo Judaization, despite the terror of the occupation that attempts to harm our heritage and Judaize it. Palestine, with its people, its land, its history, its trees, and everything within it – it is the faithful protector of our heritage, and it is waging a daily struggle against the occupation, at a time when Israel does not cease its acts of forgery and robbery against the Muslim and Christian holy sites and the antiquities sites - which are the required basis for heritage and national culture - and steals our Canaanite heritage.”

PA TV discounts archaelogical find as a "forgery": Israel "fabricates lies" as part of plan to "build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque"
Source: Official Palestinian Authority TV, Oct. 29, 2016
Official PA TV News, on Israeli archaeologists casting doubt on the authenticity of the newly found papyrus from 700 BCE on which is written "Jerusalem" in ancient Hebrew script
Official PA TV reporter: "The Israeli media is attempting to use a document which is said to be a certificate on which is written in the ancient Hebrew script 'Jerusalem,' and which was found four years ago. According to the story, Israel attempts to fabricate lies and to find proof of them or to write what it wants about them (i.e., the finds) in order to impose the Israeli plan that aspires to build the alleged Temple in place of the Al-Aqsa Mosque. Here begins the story, in the middle of the West Bank desert (i.e., Judean Desert) a piece of papyrus form the 7th century BCE is found, and according to the claims it is a certificate for the transfer of a certain type of wine that was sent by the king from the town of Na’arata in the Jordan Valley, north of Jericho... The thief who claims that Israel has a history through his pursuit of antiquities thieves – is looking for the first market to display what he stole. Thus also [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu, who is attempting to stand in the path of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) after the slap on the cheek he received last week. Against the background of events that have shaken the Israeli archaeologists regarding the level of reliability due to the precedents of forgery of documents with ancient tools and years of excavations, one of the Israeli archaeologists comes out, Israel Finkelstein [from Tel Aviv University], who denies the presence of any connection of the Jews to Jerusalem, or even any archaeological evidence pointing to the location where the Temple was located (sic., see note)."

Fatah official appreciates UNESCO resolution during "difficult period in which the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem are subjected to the dangers of Judaization and ... even ethnic cleansing"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 20, 2016
Headline: “Hamad expressed appreciation for the UNESCO resolution to recognize Jerusalem as an Islamic heritage”
“Fatah Central Committee member Amal Hamad said that the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) resolution to recognize East Jerusalem as a pure Islamic heritage is a return of the right to its owner, a slap on the cheek of the Israeli occupation, and a refuting of its claims that it has been marketing for many decades through its enormous communications mechanism.
Hamad added that this resolution is very important, particularly in this difficult period in which the Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem are subjected to the dangers of Judaization and settlement, and even to ethnic cleansing.
She emphasized that the resolution comes in order to limit the arrogance of the occupation, and the continuation of its seizing control over everything that is Palestinian and the theft of Islamic history and culture in the holy city [of Jerusalem].”

UNESCO passed a resolution in Paris on “Occupied Palestine” on Oct. 13, 2016, with 24 countries voting in favor, 6 against, and 24 abstentions. The resolution was later approved by UNESCO's World Heritage Committee on Oct. 26, 2016, in a secret ballot in which ten countries voted in favor of the resolution, two opposed, eight abstained, and one country, Jamaica, was absent.
In the resolution UNESCO refers to the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism, only as “Al-Aqsa Mosque/Al-Haram Al-Sharif,” and presents it only as a “Muslim holy site.” For more details about the resolution, click "full article."
PA Ministry of Information: Jews attempt to "plunder the forefathers' heritage and pass off a fake Israeli narrative full of holes"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 6, 2016
Headline: “Ministry of Information: The Palestinian heritage is stronger than the Judaization”
“The [PA] Ministry of Information considered Palestinian Heritage Day – Oct. 7 – to be a rebellion against the Judaization despite the occupation’s terror that targets our heritage and [the occupation’s] falsification of it… The ministry said that the war on the national clothing, traditional foods, trees, fruits, birds, rocks, and land constitute a continuation of the desperate Israeli attempts to plunder the forefathers’ heritage and pass off a fake Israeli narrative full of holes. Likewise, the ministry praised the decision of the previous [Palestinian] government to adopt the northern orange-tufted sunbird as a national bird and the iris haynei as a national flower of our freedom-deprived land, due to the symbolism and importance of the matter for the struggle against the Israelization.”
PA Minister of Religious Affairs: "No non-Muslim has any connection to" Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., the Cave of the Patriarchs) or to Al-Aqsa Mosque, which "is defiled" by "settlers"
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Oct. 2, 2016
Headline: “Marking the anniversary of the emigration of the Prophet at the Ibrahimi Mosque”
“The [PA] Ministry of Religious Affairs yesterday [Oct. 1, 2016] marked the anniversary of the emigration of the Prophet (i.e., the Muslim New Year) at the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., the Cave of the Patriarchs) in the Old City of Hebron, in the presence of several official and civilian dignitaries, heads of institutions, and a crowd of civilians.
[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Yusuf Ida’is emphasized that the Ibrahimi Mosque will remain an Islamic mosque, as no non-Muslim has any connection to it, and likewise the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, which is defiled on a daily basis by the occupation and its settlers in front of the world, and particularly in front of the Arab nation and the Muslim nation.”
PA Council: Israel perpetrated "the theft of an entire culture, with all its details and antiquities"
Source: Wattan (independent Palestinian news agency)‎, Sept. 16, 2016
Headline: "The Islamic-Christian Council: 34 years since the Sabra and Shatila massacre and the crimes continue"
"The [PA] Islamic-Christian Council for Jerusalem and the Holy Places emphasized today, Friday [Sept. 16, 2016],… in a statement that the Israeli occupation authorities, with their ongoing violations in occupied Jerusalem, are willingly desecrating the sanctity of the sites holy to Islam and Christianity, and attack them with fires, destruction, and impurity. This is in addition to the theft of an entire culture, with all its details and antiquities, and the excavation of networks of tunnels under the Old City of the occupied city [Jerusalem], and particularly under the foundations of the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, in preparation for a despicable crime and massacre against the first direction of prayer (i.e., Jerusalem) and the third holiest sanctuary (i.e., the Al-Aqsa Mosque)."

Sabra and Shatila - Sabra and Shatila are Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. In 1982, during the first Lebanon War, Muslim residents of the camps were massacred by Christian Phalangists. The PA has a longstanding policy of falsely accusing Israel of committing the massacre or actively helping to carry it out.
PA cartoon: Israeli soldier eats ancient archaeological site
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Sept. 6, 2016

Text at top of cartoon: “Sebastia…”

The cartoon shows an Israeli soldier eating a Roman column from the antiquities of Sebastia, as if it were a hot dog. Sebastia was the capital of the northern kingdom of Israel in the 9th and 8th centuries BCE and today is under the jurisdiction of the Israeli Nature and Parks Authority. The cartoon refers to the PA claims that Israel is trying to take over the archeological site of Sebastia – which is located in Area C, under full Israeli security and administrative control.
PA minister claims Cave of Patriarchs is a "purely Islamic site," condemns Jewish "invasions" of Al-Aqsa and calls for Ribat
Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Sept. 1, 2016
Headline: “The occupation closed the Ibrahimi Mosque today, and banned the sounding of the call to prayer 49 times during the past month”
“The Israeli occupation authorities today, Thursday [Sept. 1, 2016], closed the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron, and used the Jewish holidays as an excuse…
[PA] Minister of Religious Affairs Yusuf Ida’is condemned the occupation’s decision to close the mosque. He emphasized that it is necessary to act immediately in order to save it and put an end to this and all of the daily violations and attacks. Likewise, he viewed this as ‘an outrageous blow to the Muslims and to the purely Islamic site.’…
He added: ‘In the same way, the occupation continues its policy at the Al-Aqsa Mosque – daily invasions, Talmudic (i.e., Jewish) prayers, and plans to change the face of the land adjacent to it. [Even] the dead were not saved from its policy, especially in the historical Ma’man Allah (i.e., Mamilla) cemetery, which was and still is subjected to the ugliest attack. It [the occupation] is holding an alcohol drinking festival (i.e., the Jerusalem Beer Festival at Independence Park at the end of August 2016) on its land, and there is no need to mention the digging [in graves], the shattering [of tombstones], and the planting of fake graves.’
Likewise, he called to maintain a permanent presence [at the Al-Aqsa Mosque], and to go up to it and continue [carrying out] Ribat (i.e., religious conflict/war over land claimed to be Islamic).”

PA Minister of Culture warns: We must preserve Palestinian heritage "in order to prevent the occupation from making it Israeli"

This was during his participation in the Live with the Government program that is produced by the Palestine Live channel (i.e., official PA TV Live) in cooperation with the [official PA] Palestinian News and Information Agency WAFA…
He [Bessaiso] said: ‘The preservation of the heritage is the joint responsibility of the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Culture, because the heritage is in the sights of the occupation… We are also in need of a diplomatic effort in order to internationalize the issue of preserving the heritage, and this is in order to prevent the occupation from making it Israeli.’”
PA daily: Israel imposes Israeli curriculum on Palestinian schools in Jerusalem as part of its “Judaization” and “falsification of history”
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 10, 2016
Headline: "The occupation is trying to impose the Israeli curriculum on the schools in Al-Quds (i.e., Jerusalem)"

"The Israeli Ministry of Education is trying in every way to harm the Palestinian curriculum. Since the occupation of Al-Quds (i.e., Arab name for Jerusalem) in 1967 and until this day, it implements a number of methods and does everything in its power to control the minds of the Palestinian students and falsify the Palestinian history, and to change the face of the Arab and Islamic archeological remnants, in order to inculcate the Hebrew names in the minds of the Al-Quds students (i.e., Palestinian students).

Lately, the intention of the Israeli Ministry of Education to budget 20 million [Israeli] shekels for the renovation and building of classrooms, the renovation of [sport] fields, the installation of air conditioners, and the construction of labs and computer rooms - on the condition that the Israeli 'matriculation' curriculum be taught - was revealed.

Chairman of the Al-Quds Committee of Students' Parents Ziyad Al-Shamali revealed in an exclusive interview with Al-Hayat Al-Jadida new devious ways that the Israeli Ministry of Education is using to wipe out the Palestinian curriculum.

Al-Shamali clarified that according to the law, the allotment of these funds for renovations is not a privilege, but rather an obligation imposed on the occupation municipality, the Israeli Ministry of Education, and the Department of Education, as many of the schools in Al-Quds belong to them. However, today the standards have changed; money has become a type of temptation for the school administrations – meaning for private schools, which are targeted for the implementation of the Israeli curriculum even more than the municipality schools.

Al-Shamali emphasized that the Al-Quds Committee of Students' Parents will not allow these [schools], including as many as possible of the
PLO Education official: Israeli program benefiting East Jerusalem schools is attack on Palestinian students’ identity
Source: Official PA daily, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Aug. 9, 2016
Headline: “Al-Sudani condemned the occupation’s targeting of the Jerusalem schools and called to refuse the budget's conditions”

“Secretary-General of the [PLO] National Committee for Education, Culture, and Science Murad Al-Sudani condemned the latest decision of the occupation government, according to which the sum of 20 million [Israeli] shekels will be transferred to Arab schools in Jerusalem [only] after they agree to replace the Palestinian curriculum with the Israeli one…

Al-Sudani emphasized that this policy is part of the occupation’s large settlement plan against Jerusalem and its Arab and Islamic identity. He added that this devious step against our schools and students in Jerusalem oversteps the boundaries of the level of the courses of study , the quality of the studies, and keeping up with the pace of changes, as the occupation markets it, and that the truth is that the occupation is attempting through this to target the [Arab] identity, to tamper with the students’ brains, and to cut them off from their history and the history of the holy city and its Arab identity. Likewise, he emphasized that the Israeli occupation is attempting to use every means at its disposal in order to destroy the culture and education sector in Jerusalem by forging, eradicating, and negating it, and that the occupation’s policy targets more than 180 Arab schools in which the Palestinian curriculum is taught.”

Source: WAFA, official PA news agency, Aug. 8, 2016
Headline: “The Council for Higher Education: The occupation’s actions against the education [system] in Jerusalem are a crime”

“The [PA] Council for Higher Education condemned the Israeli occupation’s racist actions against the education [system] in Jerusalem, and primarily the brutal attack that it is waging against the Palestinian curriculum, through which it seeks to pull the Palestinian students into the Israeli curricula and universities.
These statements were made during the meeting that the council held today (Monday) [Aug. 8, 2016] in Ramallah, led by [PA] Minister of Education and Higher Education Sabri Saidam.
The council called on all of the local, international, humanitarian, and media organizations and institutions that deal with the field of human rights to come out against this attack, whose goal is to harm the educational process and blur the Palestinian national identity in the holy city.
It emphasized that the occupation’s racist steps against the education [system] and the Palestinian presence in Jerusalem require taking practical steps at the highest levels, with the support of the Arab brothers and all free people of the world, as the occupation does as it pleases in the occupied city in all fields.
Minister Saidam addressed the steps taken by the [PA] Ministry of Education and Higher Education in order to save the educational process in Jerusalem, the most recent being the distribution of the Palestinian curriculum books for free in all of the schools in Arab Jerusalem.
Saidam repeated his call to join efforts and to provide generous support, so as to preserve the education system and the Palestinian identity in Jerusalem.
He added: ‘The occupation is mustering all of its strength for the purpose of erasing the Palestinian presence in Jerusalem and destroying the education, in order to spread ignorance among the Palestinian students. It is an obligation f

He noted that the occupation authorities are pushing the region towards an abyss by their blatant desecration of the sites holy to Islam and Christianity, and particularly the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and their use of forgery and distortion in order to reverse the historical and religious facts.”

“Today, Sunday [July 24, 2016] a group of settlers invaded the village of Kifl Hares (i.e., where the tomb of the Biblical figure Caleb Ben Yefuneh is located) north of Salfit (i.e., near Ariel) in order to defile Islamic holy sites under the pretext of them being Jewish [holy sites]…
Head of the Kifl Hares municipality Abd Al-Rahim Boudhiyeh said that the religious sites Dhu Al-Kifl, Dhu Al-Nun, and Khadem Salah Al-Din are subjected to ongoing defilement and invasions by the settlers who have even burnt them in the past.”
