Thousands attend ceremony where PA officials honor bomber
“Fatah’s South Hebron [district] branch continued its celebrations marking the release of the most veteran prisoner of the southern [prisoners] (i.e., prisoners from the Hebron district), Na’im Al-Shawamreh, and the 49th anniversary of the launch of the Palestinian Revolution.
Maher Al-Namura, the official [Fatah] spokesman [of the South Hebron region], reported that the lighting of the Intilaqa (launch of the revolution) torch in downtown Dura (a Palestinian town south of Hebron) took place yesterday [Jan. 2, 2014] in honor of the veteran prisoner from the south, Na’im Al-Shawamreh, in the presence of [PA] Minister of Prisoners’ [Affairs] Issa Karake. [The ceremony was attended by] Secretary of the South [Hebron district Fatah] Branch Yasser Dudin, [Fatah] Revolutionary Council member Ziad Rajoub, and a large crowd of Fatah supporters and masked men who bore the Intilaqa torch while cheering the Martyrs (Shahids) and prisoners.
Al-Shawamreh lit the torch among the crowd, which asserted its support of President Mahmoud Abbas and the Palestinian leadership, and expressed its appreciation of this great achievement. The thousands of well-wishers continued to arrive, one after the other, at the house of prisoner Al-Shawamreh, at the site set up by Fatah’s Southern Branch in his native village, Khallat Al-Aqd, in southern Dura…
Present at the ceremony were Fatah Central Committee member Jibril Rajoub, [PA] Minster of Prisoners’ [Affairs] Issa Karake, Chairman of the Prisoners’ Club Qadura Fares, District Governor of Hebron Kamel Hamid, District Governor of Ramallah and El-Bireh Laila Ghannam, [PA] Health Minister Jawad Awad and a large delegation representing all the Security Forces at the Hebron District headquarters.”
Intilaqa - "the Launch" (i.e., the “launch” of Fatah. Refers to the day of Fatah's first terror attack against Israel in 1965 when it tried to blow up Israel's National Water Carrier.)
Na’im Al-Shawamreh – was arrested on March 14, 1995 for planting an explosive device. The device exploded and killed Yossi Hayoun, a police sapper, while he was defusing it (June, 1993). Al-Shawamreh was serving a life sentence, but was released in December 2013 as one of the 104 terrorists whom Israel agreed to release to fulfill the PA's precondition for renewing negotiations.
