"Yesterday was the 42nd anniversary of the Al-Khalisa operation (i.e., Kiryat Shmona massacre on April 11, 1974, 18 killed ), in which three self-sacrificing fighters (Fedayeen) infiltrated a building being used by an Israeli military Nachal unit in the Kiryat Shmona settlement which is located on the lands of the village of Al-Khalisa.
The self-sacrificing fighters held a number of Israelis [hostage] and demanded the release of 100 Arab prisoners from the Israeli prisons. However, the Israeli army broke into the building and the three self-sacrificing fighters died as Martyrs (Shahids); 19 were killed (sic., 18 were killed –Ed.), and an additional 16 of the attacking Israeli soldiers were injured.
The heroes [of the operation] were the Martyrs Munir Mughrabi 'Abu Shaker', a Palestinian born in 1954, Ahmad Mahmoud 'Abu Shaker', a Syrian born in Halab in 1954, and Yassin Al-Hourani 'Abu Hadi', who was born in southern Iraq in 1954.
On April 11, 1974, a squad of fighters of the Popular Front – General Command (i.e., the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, PFLP – GC) infiltrated the Kiryat Shmona colony in northern Palestine (i.e., Israel), took over a school and a building of 15 apartments and held a number of Israeli hostages after a battle with an Israeli force.
The self-sacrificing fighters demanded the release of 100 self-sacrificing fighter prisoners who had been imprisoned in the Israeli occupation prisons since 1966 according to the length of their imprisonment, including the Japanese self-sacrificing fighter Kozo Okamoto, who was sentenced to life for participating in the Lod airport operation in 1972 (i.e., terror attack, 24 killed).
The occupation authorities refused the demands of the self-sacrificing fighters and reinforced their forces in the colony. Afterwards, they began an attack on the building in which the hostages were being held. A fierce battle took place between the unit's fighters and the occupation forces, and the self-sacrificing fighters carried out their threat and blew up the building after planting bombs in different places inside it.
The operation led to the death as Martyrs of the three self-sacrificing fighters, the death of 18 Israelis, and the injury of an additional 15 (sic., 16)."
Kiryat Shmona Massacre – three Lebanese terrorists infiltrated Israel and entered a building in Kiryat Shmona where they murdered 18 Israelis – 16 civilians, 8 of them children, and 2 soldiers - and wounded 16 on April 11, 1974. They blew themselves up when Israeli soldiers entered the building.
The DFLP (Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine) has carried out numerous terror attacks, including the Ma’alot massacre in which 22 schoolchildren and 4 adults were killed (May 15, 1974), the Avivim school bus massacre, in which 9 children and 3 adults were killed (May 22, 1970), the Kiryat Shmona massacre (18 killed, April 11, 1974), the Beit Shean attack (4 killed, Nov. 19, 1974), the Jaffa street bombing in Jerusalem (7 killed, Nov. 13, 1975) the Tiberias bombing (2 high school students killed, May 15, 1979), the Night of the Gliders (in which two terrorists infiltrated Israel from Lebanon using hang gliders, killing 6 Israeli soldiers on Nov. 25, 1987), and the Geha junction suicide bombing near Tel Aviv (4 killed, Dec. 25, 2003.) The DFLP has participated in and claimed responsibility for dozens of other terror attacks.
The PFLP has planned and carried out numerous terror attacks against Israeli civilians since its founding in 1967 and throughout the Palestinian terror campaign between 2000- 2005 (the Intifada).
Lod Airport attack – on May 30, 1972, Takeshi Okudaira, Yasuyuki Yasuda and Kozo Okamoto – members of the Japanese Red Army who had been recruited by the Palestinian terror organization Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) – carried out a terror attack at Israel’s Lod (Tel Aviv) airport, killing 24 (8 Israelis and 16 foreign tourists), and wounding over 70. Okudaira and Yasuda were killed during the attack; Okamoto was arrested.
