The US “conspires against Egypt” and ‎prevents Arab countries from becoming ‎regional powers

Op-ed by Hafez Al-Barghouti, regular ‎columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:
‎“Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi ‎will leave for Russia on his first visit ‎abroad since assuming power in his ‎country… The Egyptian president is ‎working to build, fortify and defend his ‎country – but this is not in the interests of ‎US policy, since a strong Egypt means an ‎Egypt with a strong Arab [character] – an ‎Egypt that leads. This is impermissible ‎according to the US way of thinking, since ‎US strategy forbids the emergence of an ‎Arab power equal to Israel, Turkey or ‎Iran… In practice, Washington is ‎conspiring against Egypt and El-Sisi, ‎using regional pawns: The Muslim ‎Brotherhood, the remnants of the terror ‎organizations, Qatar and Turkey. The ‎importance of El-Sisi’s visit to Russia is ‎thus similar to that of [Egyptian leader ‎Gamal Abdel] Nasser’s visit after the ‎blockade was imposed on him by the US, ‎the West, Israel and the Muslim ‎Brotherhood, as he was struggling to build ‎the Aswan Dam (in the 1950s, -Ed.). How ‎similar the past is to the present! The same ‎enemies, the same conspirators [who are ‎becoming] Americanized, [sharing] the ‎same pie: Arab oil mixed with Arab blood.”‎
