Fatah spokesman: Abbas keeps to the Palestinian basic principles, even if sometimes he employs “maneuvers and tactics”
Headline: "It will be recorded in history that President Mahmoud Abbas kept the basic principles and did not waive our people's rights"
"Fatah Spokesman Osama Al-Qawasmi stated that history will bear witness to the fact that President Mahmoud Abbas kept the basic Palestinian national principles ratified by the Palestinian National Council in Algeria in 1988 (i.e., the declaration of a Palestinian state by former PA Chairman Arafat), in the presence of all the leaders of the Palestinian national activity, from the right and the left, and that he clearly defended the independent Palestinian national decision [making capability]. Likewise, it will bear witness that he brought the Palestinian cause back from the darkness of oblivion to its natural place in the world, strengthened the rights of the Palestinian people legally and internationally, built the institutions of the Palestinian state, and succeeded in protecting his people from annihilation and doom in light of the devastating, sweeping wars occurring in the region, and kept the sail and compass [pointed] toward Jerusalem, the state, the building, and the unity.
Al-Qawasmi explained in a press release that President Mahmoud Abbas is traveling the world, from east to west, around the clock, and is carrying on his shoulders the pain and hopes of an underprivileged people that awaits freedom and independence, and therefore he bears what mountains are incapable of bearing, whether pressures and threats from Israel and the US, from some of those who call themselves friends and brothers, or from some of our people.
However, he stands strong and steady, and continues on his path of liberation which places the interests of the Palestinian people first, before making any decision…
Al-Qawasmi concluded by saying that the president carries out maneuvers and tactics regarding secondary issues, but is as hard as stone when it comes to the significant and critical ones, and the greatest proof of this is that the negotiations were stopped and the conflict continues, and if the president had given up, the cause and dispute would have come to an end."
This article refers to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas' interview in Der Spiegel in which he stated that he opposes stabbings and that the Palestinian security system is working in coordination with Israel and even arrested three young people who tried to carry out an attack. This interview drew a lot of criticism from Palestinian factions, including Hamas.

Palestinian declaration of independence - On Nov. 15, 1988, before the Palestine National Council (PNC), the Palestinian parliament in exile in Algeria, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Yasser Arafat declared the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Although the borders were not specified in the declaration, it recognized the UN partition plan of 1947, which called for the creation of a Jewish state and an Arab state in the former British Mandate for Palestine.
