Abbas calls murderer "heroic" and claims his actions "constitute the correct path" to Palestinian statehood

Headline: "The president: Emptying the prisons is our top priority, and the blood of the Martyrs will not be in vain"
"[PA] President Mahmoud Abbas said that the prisoners' movement gave and still gives to the Palestinian national project, and therefore the leadership places the issue of emptying the prisons and ending the suffering of our prisoners in the Israeli occupation's prison cells at the top of our list of priorities and concerns.
This was said when the president yesterday [Oct. 15, 2016] at the [PA’s] presidential headquarters in Ramallah received the petition of the family of Martyr (Shahid) prisoner Yasser Hamdouni, who died as a Martyr on Aug. 25, 2016, in the Israeli Soroka Hospital after having a heart attack in the Rimon Prison.
The president conveyed to the Hamdouni family his warm condolences over the death as a Martyr of its heroic son in the occupation's prisons, and emphasized that the Martyrs' blood and their sacrifices will not be in vain and will constitute the correct path to the establishment of our independent Palestinian state, whose capital is East Jerusalem. Martyr Hamdouni's family expressed its thanks and appreciation of the president's position and his standing by their side in this tragedy, and said that Martyr Yasser sacrificed his soul for Palestine, its liberation, and its independence.”

Yasser Dhiab Hamdouni was serving a life sentence for participating in the murder of Israeli citizen Avner Maimon in the Palestinian town of Ya'abad in the West Bank (June, 12, 2003). Hamdouni, a member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades (Fatah’s military wing), died on Sept. 25, 2016, after collapsing while exercising in the Israeli Rimon Prison yard.
