Abbas’ advisor: Israel “lies and [makes] false claims… [and] has acted to mislead the world and forge history”
Headline: "Advisor Zumlut: We are continuing our legal battle against the occupation"
"Advisor to [PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas] for Strategic Affairs Husam Zumlut emphasized that the [PA] leadership is continuing its legal battle against the occupation and the Israeli extremism and settlement government in order to hold the world legally, ethically, and politically responsible for finding a fair solution to the Palestinian cause similarly to many of the international disputes…
He noted that the international and legal effort of the leadership has put us in to action and exposed the lies and false claims of the Israeli side, which has acted to mislead the world and forge history. Likewise, he noted that the latest UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) resolution regarding Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque shook the occupation state and exposed all the efforts of its false institutions…
He added that the leadership is serious about opening the topic of the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration), and about holding Britain legally, ethically, and politically responsible for what happened to the Palestinian people for an entire century, following the decision to give what was not in its ownership to one who had no right to it. He noted that Britain has taken the Palestinian position very seriously, and that a meeting will be held on the subject in the coming days between Palestinian and British top officials in order to discuss the Palestinian position that demands that the British government apologize to the Palestinian people for what has happened to it, recognize its political rights and the State of Palestine, and help end the occupation.
He emphasized that the leadership will act to bring about a new discussion of Partition Resolution 194 (sic., Resolution 181) (calling for the partition of the British Mandate of Palestine into two states, Arab and Jewish, which the Arabs rejected –Ed.), which was published by the [UN] Security Council, and on the basis of which Israel was established on the land of Palestine without implementing the second part of it – the establishment of an Arab state, and of Resolution 181 (sic., Resolution 194) , which specifically demanded the return of the Palestinian refugees to their homes from which they were expelled by force, and by which the State of Israel did not abide, despite [the fact] that it drew its international legitimacy from them."
The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government views with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and is seen as the basis for later international commitments to establish the State of Israel.
UN resolution 194 (Chapter 11, Dec. 11, 1948) states that "the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return." Palestinian leaders argue this means that all Arabs who left Israel during the war (hundreds of thousands) and their descendants (a few million) have a "right of return" to Israel. Israel argues that the resolution only calls for a limited return and only under certain conditions, especially focusing on the words "wishing to return... and live at peace with their neighbors."
