Op-ed in official PA daily: "Castro is the last of the greats"
Headline: “Castro is the last of the greats”
Excerpt of an op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, regular columnist for the official PA daily
“The last of the greats of the 20th century died in the land of Communist Cuba, which was liberated by him and [where] he conducted the struggle against the tyrants, and particularly the US. Fidel Castro died this Nov. 25, [2016], after 90 years of an ongoing struggle to defend Cuba, its people, and its development. However, the father of the great Cuban revolution of January 1959, its leader and a beacon of light for the peoples of Latin America and the third world, will [live] on as long as the pages of history continue to proudly tell the stories and splendor of the great pioneers and leaders like him…
Despite the American and Western siege, Cuba stood firm against the capitalist tyrants, did not surrender, paved the way of building and liberation, promised free mandatory education for residents of Cuba, provided the people with comprehensive health insurance, and built the material basis for Cuban industry and agriculture. Likewise, Cuba constituted a beacon of light to Latin America and the peoples of the third world in the struggle for liberation. It constituted fertile ground for revolutions and inspiration for the commanders of the revolutions in Nicaragua, Venezuela, Honduras, Chile, Argentina, and additional countries, and [Nicaraguan President Daniel] Ortega and the great [Venezuelan President] Hugo Chavez followed the paths of Castro and the Cuban revolution.”
