Abbas and other PA officials eulogize archbishop who smuggled weapons to Palestinian terrorists

"The State of Palestine, its [PA] President Mahmoud Abbas, and its forces and national activists yesterday [Jan. 1, 2017] eulogized [former Greek Catholic] Archbishop Hilarion Capucci, who died yesterday in Rome, the capital of Italy, at the age of 94.
President Abbas described Archbishop Capucci, who was known for his patriotic positions and his defense of the rights of the Palestinian people, as a great fighter. It should be noted that President Abbas awarded the late archbishop the Star of Jerusalem Medal in 2013 in Rome. The national unity government led by [PA Prime Minister] Rami Hamdallah eulogized Archbishop Capucci. Official [PA] Government Spokesman Yusuf Al-Mahmoud said that the death of Archbishop Capucci left deep sorrow in the heart of every Palestinian, due to the his overflowing life of struggle and the positions he adhered to in the defense of the Palestinian people and the Palestinian cause – and this alongside his religious eminence.
The Fatah Movement eulogized fighter Capucci, who filled a large and active role in supporting the Palestinian resistance, both by providing aid to the Palestinian revolution, and through his unceasing defense of the rights of the Palestinian people and its just cause."

Hilarion Capucci – former Greek Catholic Archbishop of Jerusalem who exploited his status as a religious leader to smuggle weapons to terrorists. He was arrested in 1974 and sentenced to 12 years in prison. He was released in 1977 due to the Vatican’s intervention. In October 2013, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas awarded him the Star of Jerusalem Medal.
