Released prisoner claims Israel tortures prisoners, who are turned into “medical guinea pigs”
“Dozens of family members of prisoners and released prisoners, representatives of official and popular institutions, and representatives of the national activity factions in the Jenin district participated in a solidarity rally in Silat Al-Harithiya for sick prisoner Anas Jaradat, who was sentenced to 35 life sentences and another 35 years…
[Released prisoner] Muhannad Jaradat said in a speech he gave on behalf of Director of [PLO] Commission of Prisoners’ Affairs [Issa Karake] that the occupation tortures the prisoners in many mental and physical ways, while ignoring all of the international humanitarian norms and conventions. He held the occupation authorities fully responsible for the life of prisoner Jaradat and the rest of the prisoners, ‘who have become the medical guinea pigs of the occupation authorities.’”
Anas Jaradat was the leader of the Islamic Jihad terror organization in Jenin. He was assistant to the Islamic Jihad leader Iyad Sawalha who was head of the Islamic Jihad in the West Bank. Jaradat planned and organized 3 car bombings in Israel (bus no. 830 from Tel Aviv to Tiberias, June 5, 2002, 17 killed. Karkour junction, Oct. 21, 2002, 14 killed. An attempted attack thwarted when a car loaded with hundreds of kilograms of explosives was seized near Haifa, Sept. 5, 2002). Jaradat was arrested by Israeli soldiers on May 11, 2003 and sentenced to 35 life sentences and 35 years.
Muhannad Jaradat was serving a 20-year sentence. Israel released him in July 2007 as a gesture to the PA after he had served 18 years in prison. PMW has been unable to verify the specific nature of his crimes.
