Protests against PA Security Forces suppression of peaceful demonstrations in Ramallah
Headline: "The [Palestinian] People's Party condemned the suppression of the demonstration in Ramallah and demanded an accounting of those responsible for it and an apology to the people"
"The Palestinian People's Party (i.e., a member of the PLO) expressed its strong condemnation of the attack by the Palestinian [PA] Security Forces against participants in the sit-in strike that was held as a sign of protest today in Ramallah. The party demanded that the PA leadership investigate this attack, which was directed against civilians who were protesting putting Martyr (Shahid) Basel Al-A’araj (i.e., head of terror cell) and his comrades on trial.
The People's Party said in a statement that was published this afternoon, Sunday, March 12, 2017, and which reached the [independent Palestinian news] agency Wattan, that the Security Forces’ attack against a peaceful protest rally in Ramallah and its suppression through stun grenades, tear gas, pepper spray, and beating participants with batons and harassing them, alongside attacking Martyr Al-A'araj's father and journalists, constitute a scandalous violation of the national norms and values and of the democratic freedoms that are fixed by law. It also noted that these violations repeat themselves in different ways and expressions, despite the repeated promises to stop them."
Basel Al-A’araj – head of a Palestinian terror cell that planned to attack Israeli targets. Al-A'araj and his cell were arrested by the PA Security Forces in spring 2016 and held in prison until they were released on Sept. 9, 2016, largely due to a public Palestinian campaign. Israeli soldiers tried to arrest Al-A'araj in El-Bireh on March 6, 2017, but he resisted and opened fire on them at which point they shot and killed him.
