PLO official: no one has the right to stop paying the prisoner salaries
Headline: “[PLO] Executive Committee member: No one has the right to stop the prisoners’ allowances (mukhassasat)”
“PLO Executive Committee member Tayseer Khaled said that the Government of Israel and the American Administration are trying to drag the Palestinians into side battles and even invented [battles], like the Jewishness of the state, the salaries (rawatib) of the prisoners and Martyrs (Shahids), and the dismantling of UNRWA (UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East), and far from the gist of the conflict, which was and remains the Israeli occupation and the legal national rights of the Palestinian people.
He emphasized that the allowances that the PLO provides to the families of the Martyrs, wounded, and prisoners of Palestine were, still are, and will continue to be a political, national, human, and moral obligation, and that no one in the PLO or PA has the right to stop paying these allowances, other than the Palestinian National Council (i.e., the legislative body of the PLO), which has the political and legal authority on this matter.
These statements were made in response to American Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s statements at a Senate hearing yesterday, Tuesday [June 13, 2017], regarding the 2018 American State Department budget, which is expected to include an increase in the financial aid that Washington is providing to the PA.”
