PLO official: Israeli security measures after terror attack are part of “plan whose goal is to divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and afterwards to destroy it and establish the alleged Temple in its place"
Op-ed by Head of the PLO Department of Jerusalem Affairs and PLO Executive Committee member Ahmed Qurei
Headline: “Be careful, just not the Al-Aqsa Mosque”
“The provocative steps that the occupation authorities took in all of Jerusalem, and around the Al-Aqsa Mosque in particular, since Friday morning (the placing of metal detectors following an attack there on July 14, 2017, in which 2 were murdered; see note below –Ed.), have aroused all of the Palestinian, Arab, and Islamic nightmares at once and brought back to memory all of the similar steps that Israel took against the Ibrahimi Mosque (i.e., Cave of the Patriarchs) in Hebron about half a century ago, which led to the division of the mosque [between Jews and Muslims] by times and areas and dictated a precedent that we seriously fear the occupation force will repeat again… And we see with our own eyes the first steps that are paving the way for the implementation of the plan whose goal is to divide the Al-Aqsa Mosque, and afterwards to destroy it and establish the alleged Temple in its place… At the same time, we must be careful not to ignore any step by the occupation against the Al-Aqsa Mosque and consider it just a temporary step by the occupation. We also must not turn to notices and unfounded statements or deal with the clear Israeli intentions to divide the Jerusalem mosque as if the matter does not require an exceptional stance of a different character or the issuing of this blatant challenge does not justify carrying out urgent self-criticism. Criticism through which Palestinians will abandon their minor disputes and rise above their narrow accountings, and afterwards will hurry to unite behind a common critical goal, which is the defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque by all legal and possiblemeans as this is the hour of truth.”
Muhammad Ahmad Muhammad Jabarin, Muhammad Hamed Abd Al-Latif Jabarin, and Muhammad Ahmad Mufaddal Jabarin - Israeli Arab terrorists aged 29, 19, and 19, who shot from the Temple Mount at Israeli policemen, murdering 2 Israeli Druze border policemen - Haiel Stawi and Kamil Shnaan, on July 14, 2017. Two of the terrorists were shot and killed by other policemen during the attack. The third terrorist was shot and killed while trying to flee.
"Division according to areas and times" refers to a proposed law (May 2013) being reviewed in Israeli Parliament that would allow for both Jews and Muslims to pray on the Temple Mount, what the Palestinians call the Al-Aqsa Mosque plaza. The law seeks to designate separate prayer times and areas of the site for Muslims and Jews. However, Israeli PM Netanyahu has stated on many occasions that the Israeli government has no intention of changing the status quo on the Temple Mount, which means Jews are allowed to enter the Temple Mount, but cannot pray there or engage in any type of worship.
The terms "all means”, "all means of resistance," “all forms,” are used by PA leaders to include using all types of violence, including deadly terror against Israeli civilians such as stabbings and shootings, as well as throwing rocks and Molotov Cocktails.
