UNWRA official: UNWRA delivers food aid to a million refugees in Gaza

Headline: “Abu Hasna: UNRWA is delivering food as aid to a million refugees in the Gaza Strip”
“UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Media Advisor Adnan Abu Hasna said yesterday [Sept. 10, 2017] that UNRWA is delivering food as aid to a million Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip.
He added that every two years UNRWA assesses the situation of the needy families in order to check if it has improved, if they have become poorer, and if new families have joined the lists of the eligible. He said: ‘We are currently delivering food as aid to approximately a million Palestinian refugees. This is a record number that is unprecedented in past decades.’
Abu Hasna explained that the number of those receiving food as aid from UNRWA was 80,000 in 2000, whereas today aid is delivered to a million refugees – in other words, roughly 12 times as many. He added that despite the deficit in the UNRWA general budget, which stands at $125 million, it is continuing to deliver its services effectively.”
