Official PA daily Editor in Chief: “Trump ‘declared’ Jerusalem - with no justification – the capital of the occupation state”

Official PA TV program Palestine This Morning, on the PA media campaign for Jerusalem, hosting official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida Editor in Chief Mahmoud Abu Al-Haija

Official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida Editor in Chief Mahmoud Abu Al-Haija: “We should not use the term that [US] President [Donald] Trump ‘recognized’ Jerusalem as the capital [of Israel]. The word ‘recognition’ has the meaning of recognizing something that exists. Trump ‘declared’ Jerusalem - with no justification – the capital of the occupation state, and therefore this decision should be treated as a declaration and not as recognition.”

Official PA TV host: “We must mention the significance of the consolidation of the Palestinian media effort on that which concerns terminology and conveying the news, in order to deal with the Israeli media that always attempts to spread false rumors, and convey facts in a distorted way… [What is] the significance of the consolidation of the media efforts?”

Abu Al-Haija: “The significance of the consolidation of the media terminology, the consolidation of the words - every Arab media institution can participate in the effort of defending the matter of Jerusalem, but [this should be] through the consolidation of the media terminology, through the consolidation of the media discourse. The media efforts continue. Every institution and every paper and every [radio] station can do what it thinks is in service of this sacred cause, and in the language that it chooses. However, it must use precise terms, our terms, that we will write, that we will invent, and we should not be dragged after the Western and Israeli media…”

Host: “We will talk a little about the efforts of [the official PA daily] Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, of the teams that always cover the events around the clock. We send a blessing here, through you, to our colleagues at Al-Hayat Al-Jadida. Since Trump’s declaration, the Al-Hayat Al-Jadida daily is fully dedicated to the matter of ‘Jerusalem the eternal capital of Palestine.’”

Abu Al-Haija: “It is part of our duty, part of our mission. We are leading or fulfilling a national mission in this work, and not just from a professional perspective… I, as editor in chief – we thank them very much, as they are doing professional coverage at a high and excellent level, at least on the first page… All of this excellence is in order to emphasize the national identity of the Palestinian media discourse.”

Host: “They have essentially become a source for conveying news items, and we all see this, everyone is passing on [news items] from Al-Hayat Al-Jadida.”

Abu Al-Haija: “Thank you…
The Arab journalists – and I was at their conference in Baghdad – it can be said that they are the conscience of the Arab nation, and they are completely unified regarding its causes, questions of the Arab fate; and the most prominent cause is the cause of Palestine and Jerusalem, which has become more and more urgent following American President Trump’s announcement…
The Arab journalists, on all levels, are Palestinians in one way or another - Palestinians in thought, idea, Palestinians in the texts that they present – whether news reports or op-eds – everyone tries to serve – to fulfill his role in the system of defending the Palestinian cause.”

US recognition of Jerusalem as capital of Israel - On Dec. 6, 2017, US President Donald Trump formally recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and instructed the State Department to begin preparations to transfer the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Trump added that the final borders of Jerusalem will be determined during negotiations.
