Op-ed published in official PA daily attacks the US, speaks about its "excess of stupidity" and its attempt "to destroy the native people"
Excerpt of an op-ed by Muwaffaq Matar, a member of the Fatah Revolutionary Council and regular columnist for the official PA daily, on the Israeli and American responses to PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ speech before the UN Security Council on Feb. 20, 2018
Headline: “Your honor the [PA] president, what did you do to them?”
“What did you say, what did you do, that those who rebel against international law rushed to shoot poisoned arrows at you?
They watched the [PA] president of peace, the man Mahmoud Abbas, convince the hearts and minds of the representatives of the states of the world about the Palestinian people’s historical and natural right to its homeland, Palestine…
However, due to the their great hostility and the excess of stupidity that is characteristic of the oppressors from the colonialist twins – the representative of the occupation state (Israel) [Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon] and the representative of the US [US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley] – they emptied all of the poisoned words in their arsenal and fired indiscriminately, exactly as they fire their shells, their rockets, and their bullets at the chests and heads of our young people and our children. Here they are at the peak of an attempt to politically eliminate you before the world, while you sit at the [UN] Security Council chair and speak about your people’s rights…
They said that you are giving the prisoners and the families of the Palestinian Martyrs (Shahids) monthly allowances and salaries, and that your insistence on doing so is a sort of support for terror. When their words (i.e., criticism of Abbas for insisting to continue to pay salaries to prisoners and “Martyrs” –Ed.) reached the ears of the prisoners and their families, the families of the Martyrs, and the souls of those who outlined the path to freedom for us with their blood and lives, they calmed the hearts of the believers… This means that they understood how much you are insisting and standing on your national position regarding the continued loyalty to the Martyrs and prisoners. They unintentionally confirmed your adherence to this matter, and this is not unusual when talking about a representative of the occupation state (i.e., Danon) and a representative of [US President Donald] Trump (i.e., Haley), who have a common denominator: They both represent states that have attempted to destroy the native people, in Palestine and before that the Indians in America…
O leader of the Palestinian National Liberation Movement [Fatah], you have taken them down with the net of your initiative and the peace plan that you presented before the world…
You have embarrassed the representative of the slap of the century’s initiator (i.e., Trump’s representative Haley; “slap of the century” rhymes with “deal of the century,” a term for Trump’s Middle East peace plan. After Trump’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, Palestinians began to refer to his peace plan as “the slap of the century” -Ed.) and the representative of [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu the liar and most corrupt person in the state of corrupt people and war criminals in the current century!”
PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas left the UN Security Council immediately after his speech on Feb. 20, 2018, in which he demanded that an international conference replace the US as patrons of peace efforts. U S Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley responded to him afterwards, saying: “I sit here today offering the outstretched hand of the United States to the Palestinian people in the cause of peace. …The United States stands ready to work with the Palestinian leadership. Our negotiators are sitting right behind me, ready to talk, but we will not chase after you. The choice, Mr. President, is yours.” She further emphasized that the decision to transfer the US embassy to Jerusalem “will not change.” Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon responded to Abbas’ abrupt departure from the UN Security Council meeting, saying: “Once again, he is running away. He put his demands on the table and he left, and he is expecting you to deliver the results. It’s not going to work that way. The only way to achieve results is to have direct negotiations.”
