PA Education Ministry: Israel is “distorting” the PA curriculum, as part of “racist plans” to “occupy the collective consciousness and harm the Palestinian historical narrative”
Headline: “[PA] Ministry of Education: The religious ruling banning the Israeli curriculum in Jerusalem is valid, the distortion of the Palestinian curriculum is a crime of forgery”
“The [PA] Ministry of Education and Higher Education condemned the occupation municipality in Jerusalem for distorting the Palestinian [PA] curriculum, and said that this act is a despicable crime of forgery.
It emphasized that the religious ruling issued by the Palestinian Dar Al-Ifta (lit. house of religious rulings, the office of the PA Mufti of Jerusalem –Ed.) on Sept. 20, 2017, which bans teaching the Israeli curriculum in the Palestinian schools in Jerusalem, is valid to this day. On the same matter, the ministry emphasized that it will thwart any attempt and policy whose goal is to distort the curricula… and will thwart all of the racist plans whose goal is to occupy the collective consciousness and harm the Palestinian historical narrative…
[PA Minister of Education and Fatah Central Committee Deputy Secretary Dr. Sabri] Saidam noted that the distortion of the national curricula in Jerusalem by removing several lessons and pictures and manipulating the contents again reveals the occupation authorities’ intentions, and their attempts to deprive the young generations of their national history and culture…
It should be noted that the religious ruling given by [PA] Mufti of Jerusalem and the Holy Territories [and Palestinian Supreme Fatwa Council Chairman] Sheikh Muhammad Hussein determined that ‘the study of the Israeli curriculum in the schools in Jerusalem contains great dangers, and it is forbidden to agree to their implementation in our schools instead of the approved Palestinian curriculum.’ On the same matter, Minister Saidam sent a letter to Director of the UNESCO Office in Palestine Lodovico Folin Calabi that included a reference to the escalating Israeli attack against the education in Jerusalem through the targeting of the curricula.”
Sabri Saidam also holds the following positions: Fatah Revolutionary Council Deputy Secretary and PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’ advisor for communications and information technology.
PA religious ruling banning the Israeli school curriculum – On Sept. 20, 2017, a religious ruling was published by PA Mufti Sheikh Muhammad Hussein banning the use of the Israeli school curriculum in Palestinian schools. In his ruling, Hussein said: “Teaching the Israeli curriculum in the Palestinian schools contains within it great dangers and corruption, and it is forbidden to accept its implementation in our schools instead of the approved Palestinian curriculum.” [Donia Al-Watan, independent Palestinian news agency, Feb. 27, 2018]
