"[PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas'] advisor on Foreign Affairs and International Relations Nabil Shaath said that occupation [Israeli] Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wishes through his statements – in which he demanded to carry out an additional cut in the support provided to UNRWA (UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East) and to transfer its offices to Jordan (sic., Netanyahu reportedly called to transfer UNRWA authority and funds to other bodies such as the Jordanian government and UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency); see note below –Ed.) – to complete his settlement enterprise in Palestine, and to put an end to the issue of the refugees and their right of return. Shaath emphasized in a statement to the [PA] state radio station The Voice of Palestine that no one can ignore the refugees' right of return… Shaath said that the American proposal to settle the refugees as part of what is called the ‘deal of the century' is a real crime (Details of the US plan are unknown as it has not yet been published –Ed.). He explained that the leadership has not been waiting for 'the lie of the century,' as it put it, and rejected the American role and [US President Donald] Trump's plan even before he has announced it."
During a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres in February 2018, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly said that he thinks the Palestinian refugees should continue to receive material aid, but that their status as refugees should not be perpetuate; therefore he suggested UNRAs authority and funding be transferred to other bodies such as the government of Jordan - where a majority of the Palestinian refugees live - and UNHCR (The UN Refugee Agency).
