PA municipality names street after Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez

“The Aqaba Municipality north of the city of Tubas named one of the town’s streets after former Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. This was in the presence of Venezuelan Ambassador to Palestine Maher Taha, General Supervisor of the [PA] Official Media Ahmad Assaf, [PA] Security Forces Spokesman Adnan Al-Damiri, and Acting Tubas District Governor Ahmed Al-As’ad. Taha thanked our people for this gesture. He emphasized that his state is making every effort to strengthen the ties between the two states.
He added that the naming of a Palestinian street after Chavez testifies to the strong connection between the two states, which affirms the statement: ‘Palestine is Venezuela, and Venezuela is Palestine.’”

Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias (1954-2013) was President of Venezuela from 1999 until his death in 2013. He endorsed a socialist, anti-Imperialist political ideology. Chavez was a vocal critic of America and Israel, calling Israel worse than Hitler in its treatment of Palestinians. His anti-Zionism and close relations with Iran led to allegations of Antisemitism by the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
