Will of the self-sacrificing fighters (Fedayeen) of the Munich operation from Sept. 4, 1972
To our brothers, the comrades on the long path… Tonight, Sept. 4, [1972,] at 10:00 p.m., a number of hours before our operation, one of the comrades suggested we write things to our friends, family, and nation, and to the global public opinion which is not worth anything in our eyes. We began to discuss and to write a summary of the things so that it will be our group will…
One of us asked: What do you expect will be the response to our operation? And another answered: It depends on our behavior and stability, and our success in highlighting our human voice – for we are not murderers and not robbers. We are oppressed; we do not have a land or a homeland; we do not have an identity [card] or a passport; we do not have anything to fear; and we have nothing that will frighten us. As refugees we have been silent for over 18 years, and we have pleaded for mercy and compassion, and all that they gave us was aid for the wretched, salvation from the winter and the summer. And as for the land and the homeland, these are for our enemies, who do with them as they please – until we took up the rifle, and began to feel our humanity, and then they plotted against us.
What do we expect from these enemies, will their response to us be violent, will they say: terrorists, fascists, murderers, and such, descriptions that are inappropriate for anyone but them.
One asked: Will the Zionist occupation state respond to our demands? And another answered: I don’t know, but this time we will force it to understand that we are serious, and that we will carry out our plan in its entirety. The greatest guarantee of our plan’s success is that we gave our lives the moment we joined the ranks of the revolution, and one who sells his life for his goal will certainly succeed and will certainly triumph.
Another said: And what will be the fate of our relations with Germany as Arabs? Then the commander of the operation laughed and said: Germany sustains the Zionist entity and pays the price of its [Germany’s] mistakes with other mistakes against our people. Shall I count for you the money that Germany has paid to our enemy? ...Despite this we are not against the German people, whom we know how it sees our unity and breaking free of the colonialism and imperialism that is ruling in our lands. We are not against any people in the world, and at the same time we ask: Why does the Zionist delegation have a special place in this round [of Olympic Games]? Why is the flag of the occupation – which is based on terror and oppression – raised alongside all of the flags of the world, while our flag is absent? The entire world is watching and enjoying, and we are suffering and suffering and fighting… and no ear hears our complaints and sighs… and we even receive the blow from those who claim they are Arabs and nationalists and take care of the people and the homeland, and that is what hurts… Do you remember [Jordanian King] Hussein's [Black] September (referring to events in September 1970 when the Jordanian army struck PLO bases in Jordan –Ed.)? We will undoubtedly still take revenge and the flag will pass from generation to generation until the land is liberated and the homeland purified of the agents.
One of the brothers suggested we write a will in points after this discussion is recorded and secretly sent tonight to our secret headquarters… One of the brothers wrote…:
We, the rebels of the Kafr Bir'im and Iqrit operation (two Christian villages whose residents were expelled during the Israeli War of Independence –Ed.) in Munich, guarantee to our people that we will not be negligent and not shirk the mission assigned to us, and that our lives will be cheap for the freedom of our prisoners in the occupation's prisons. We do not intend to kill innocents in our operation, and we fight for justice… but for the oppressed we will do anything.
1. In our revolutionary operation we do not want to destroy… We want the world to understand and recognize the criminal essence of the Zionist occupation in our land…
2. We call on the free people and the respectable people of the world to understand our path in the revolution, through which we seek to harm the colonialist and imperialist interests in the world…
3. We are part of the armed Palestinian revolution movement, which is part of the Arab liberation movement. And therefore we are commanded not to abandon the rifle, regardless of the plot against us…
4. The world respects only the strong, and we will not be strong through talk… but rather when we instill practical content of struggle into our slogans that will cause our enemies to doubt their ability to deal with us, and in the end will cause them to believe that they have no choice but to accept our just demands.
5. We apologize to the young athletes of the world who are participating in the Olympic Games if we have offended their sensibilities with our operation. However, we demand that they understand that there is a people whose cause has continued for more than 24 years, during which its land has been occupied and its dignity trampled; a people that is suffering and being tormented, and there is nothing wrong with the young people of the world understanding our tragedy for a number of hours – so let the games be stopped for a few hours – and after all there is a people that is suffering for years from an enemy that is occupying its place among you.
6. We do not worry about the question of where our bodies will be buried, as 'after its slaughter the sheep is not harmed by its skinning,' as our forefathers said, but we command the young people of the Arab nation to seek death, so that life will be given to them – to them, and to their countries, and to their peoples.
7. To our comrades in the Black September organization (i.e., a secret branch of Fatah), to our brothers in arms and in the struggle from among the Palestinian revolutionary forces, we say: Your loyalty to our blood will be expressed by you continuing on the path…
8. In conclusion, our brothers, we have left $500 and 73 [German] marks in our letter that we saved for the revolution…
Long live our Palestinian people and Arab nation, and the free rebels of the world."
