PA TV accuses Israel of being behind 1969 Al-Aqsa Mosque arson

Official PA TV News, on the anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Mosque arson

Official PA TV newsreader: "Today is the 50th anniversary of the Al-Aqsa Mosque arson by the terrorist settler Michael Denis [Rohan] (sic., a mentally ill Australian Christian tourist), which led to the burning of more than two thirds of the total area of the mosque, including the Nour Al-Din Mahmoud pulpit which Saladin Al-Ayyubi (i.e., founder of the 12th-13th century Ayyubid dynasty) placed [there]."

Official PA TV reporter: "The Al-Aqsa Mosque was a target of the haters' hatred when 50 years ago Michael Denis Rohan, originally Australian and pro-Israel, committed his despicable crime – setting the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque on fire… On the night of the fire (sic., the fire was started and discovered in the early morning hours), the firetrucks of the Palestinian cities and our people hurried to extinguish the fire, [while] the occupation authorities delayed the firetrucks and cut off the water in the area on the day of the fire (sic., Israeli firefighters – who eventually put out the fire and not Palestinian firefighters – arrived within minutes but rioting Muslims interfered with their work and broke the only fire hydrant at the site; PMW found no evidence for claims that Israel cut off the water)… Israel returned criminal Denis to Australia, claiming he was mentally ill. After the Al-Aqsa Mosque arson, [then Israeli Prime Minister] Golda Meir claimed that Israel could do whatever it wanted but in Jerusalem events developed in a way that Israel had not expected, and our people defended Jerusalem and its holy sites… The words of Saladin Al-Ayyubi on the eve of the liberation [of Jerusalem] are still deeply etched. This is Jerusalem, which since the enemy has taken it over costs [us] prisoners."

A number of texts are shown over a picture of Jews walking past the Dome of the Rock on the Temple Mount describing various "Israeli attacks against the Al-Aqsa Mosque." One specifies the arson committed by Australian Michael Rohan:

Text on screen: "An extremist with Australian citizenship named Michael Denis Rohan set the Al-Aqsa Mosque on fire"
