Abbas receives letter from North Korean dictator

“[PA] President [Mahmoud Abbas] received a telegram from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un [for the 31st anniversary of the Palestinian declaration of independence], in which he emphasized the [North] Korean people’s support for and constant solidarity with our people in its just cause seeking to end the occupation and establish its independent state whose capital is East Jerusalem. He also expressed his hope to strengthen and develop the historical friendship between the Korean people and the Palestinian people.”

Palestinian declaration of independence - On Nov. 15, 1988, before the Palestine National Council (PNC), the Palestinian parliament in exile in Algeria, Chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Yasser Arafat declared the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Although the borders were not specified in the declaration, it recognized the UN partition plan of 1947, which called for the creation of a Jewish state and an Arab state in the former British Mandate for Palestine.
