Abbas rep celebrates street named after "Prince of the Shahids" Abu Jihad

"Yesterday a ceremony was held in Ramallah inaugurating the Shahid (Martyr) Khalil Al-Wazir Abu Jihad street, with the participation of Tayeb Abd Al-Rahim, Secretary General of the Presidency, representing the President [Mahmoud Abbas]... In his speech on behalf of the President, Tayeb Al-Rahim said: 'Today we are celebrating the inauguration of a street named after the leader Khalil Al-Wazir, Prince of the Shahids (Martyrs)... He had the honor of introducing the idea of starting the armed Palestinian struggle, together with his brethren and colleagues, and especially the Shahid President Yasser Arafat.
He said: 'They [Israel] thought that if they were to murder Abu Jihad, they would stop the Intifada… But we say that the entire [Palestinian] nation has become Abu Jihad, and that our people are proud of him. His name has been given to hospitals and schools and centers and streets. Abu Jihad did not die; he lives on in our midst. Abu Jihad is the engineer of the revolution; the first bullet… Abd Al-Rahim congratulated the [Ramallah] city council on the naming of streets and squares after leaders, fighters and poets who gave up what was most precious for the sake of Palestine...
Janet Mikhail delivered a speech on behalf of the Ramallah municipality and said: '… We shall continue to follow in the footsteps of Abu Jihad. The Shahids – and you, their Prince – are still in our midst… Their spirit is still fighting in the field. They are in every Palestinian house, in every Palestinian birth, and [their spirit] will undoubtedly prevail."
