The cartoon, drawn by the regular cartoonist of the official PA daily Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, shows on the left an Israeli soldier with an Israeli flag on his shoulder holding a handgun and kneeling on a Palestinian with a keffiyeh (Arab headdress) around his neck, and on the right a white American police officer with an American flag on his shoulder holding a baton and kneeling on an African American. The soldier and officer have their free hands wrapped around each other’s shoulders.
The cartoon refers to the death of African American US citizen George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on May 25, 2020, when white police officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on his neck for an extended period while arresting him. Following the incident, nationwide protests ensued in the US. Officer Chauvin was since charged with 3rd degree murder and manslaughter.
