Abbas spokesman at Fatah event: Abu Jihad is "the most famous of the great Shahid (Martyr) commanders"
“During a ceremony held by the Fatah movement and the National Association of Families of Shahids (Martyrs), marking the anniversary of the Martyr death of the commander Khalil Al-Wazir [Abu Jihad]…
In [speech delivered on behalf of] President Abbas… Mahmoud Al-Aloul said: ‘I am honored to represent the President at this large gathering, the gathering [in honor] of Shahid Khalil Al-Wazir, the most famous of the great Shahid commanders who bore the yoke of leading this campaign.’ He added, ‘We speak about the heroism and about the Shahids, and hold these gatherings every year in order to remember their life stories. Many [people] wonder, what is the point of these ceremonies? We hold them in order to get to know their lives, their acts of heroism, and their qualities.’ He called to take them [the Shahids] as an example and to act with courage, as they did…
Al-Aloul emphasized that the negotiations would not continue in a pointless manner, and that activity would continue to restore unity to our people and to our homeland. He added, ‘Our principal conflict will continue to be with the occupation, and we shall remain united because the Shahids were united.’
Mahmoud al-Aloul said that the main challenge is how to continue to be in conflict with the occupation, and noted: ‘The President’s steps are in this direction, and in the direction of this choice. What is the President’s initiative [for reconciliation with Hamas] for, if not so that our people will be a single row facing the occupier.’
District Governor of [Qalqilya] Rabih Al-Khandaqji greeted those present and praised the struggle of our people and of its Shahids… The district governor said: ‘We raise the memory of the Shahids in order to renew the commitment towards them. We continue their path…’.
The district governor said, ‘The occupation government must know that the Palestinian people is the key to peace in the Middle East. The government of Israel must understand that we shall not agree to a state which includes [even] a single settlement or a single settler. We shall not agree to Jerusalem in which there is [even] a remnant of a settler.’ He called not to buckle, especially since we are armed with thousands of Shahids, as well as prisoners.”
