Sermon on PA TV glorifies Palestinian mothers for making ululations over their children's Martyrdom
Official PA TV, broadcast of Friday sermon by PA Ministry of Religious Affairs official Sheikh Ibrahim Mudayris
PA Ministry of Religious Affairs official Sheikh Ibrahim Mudayris: “This faith is what made Al-Khansa (an Arab female poet who converted to Islam in the early period of the religion and rejoiced over the “Martyrdom” of her four sons –Ed.) into a mountain, similar to all the men of the Ummah (i.e., Islamic nation); Al-Khansa who mourned over her brother Sakhr (i.e., who died avenging another brother) for many years before she entered under the wings of Islam. She cried over him, went to his grave… but in the firm religion (i.e., after she converted to Islam) she presented her four sons (i.e., in battle for Islam) and gave them a sermon before Al-Qadisiyya (i.e., a battle that tipped the scales in favor of the Muslims in conquering Persia), in which she spurred them to go out to Jihad and to fight the enemies, and said to them: ‘Go to the battle, you know that I, by the life of Allah , did not betray your father, and you are the sons of one man, and of one woman… I did not place shame upon you, so go to the battle, so that Allah will honor me through you.’
And they went to the battle, and the news of their deaths as Martyrs (Shahids) reached Al-Khansa and she said…: ’Praise to Allah who honored me by their killing’ – four of her sons… ‘Praise to Allah who honored me by their killing,’ and ‘Ask of Almighty Allah that He gather me to them at the fixed place of His mercy.’
This is the Islamic faith. Through the faith the Palestinian people succeeded in fighting this oppressive military machine (i.e., Israel) for over 50 years, and we are holding on and standing firm, because Jerusalem is part of our faith, because the love of Palestine is a large part of our faith. We will give to it, and we will sacrifice, and we will give our souls, our sons, our lives, and our homes for this part of our faith… the women of Palestine have succeeded in worrying the enemies when news of the death as a Martyr of the mother’s child arrives, and she makes ululations (i.e., sounds of joy) and says ‘Praise to Allah,’ and holds on. Thanks to this faith we will succeed in holding on and winning, with the help of Almighty Allah.
…
Avenge our Martyrs, O Avenger, O Allah
…
Take revenge on our enemies
…
Take the Jews and their helpers.
Take the US and its allies.”
Al-Khansa - an Arab woman and poet from the earliest period of Islam (7th century) famous and honored in Islamic tradition for rejoicing when all four of her sons died in battle as Martyrs. She has been lauded by the PA and often presented as a role model for mothers, and the PA has named 8 schools after her.
