PA Mufti Muhammad Hussein: “Without a doubt Jerusalem is important… and it is part of the faith of every Muslim. And Jerusalem, as great as the injustice is, as the brother [who called in] mentioned, the injustice will certainly pass and the occupation will pass… In other words, if we turn to the history of Palestine it has been occupied by many peoples, and many invaders have entered it, but in the end the occupation left and the invaders left, and the Palestinian people have remained rooted deep in this land since the Canaanite period until this very day (sic., the Palestinians have no history prior to the modern period), and they will remain until the hour [of resurrection] comes.

As Prophet [Muhammad], Allah’s blessing upon him, said: ‘A group of my nation will remain on the side of truth, overcoming its enemies, and it will not be harmed by those who abandon it… until Allah’s word will come as they are.’ They said: ‘Where are they, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘In Jerusalem and its surroundings.’ We have tidings from the prophet… that the perseverance of this believing group will remain until Allah’s word comes, and Allah’s word is victory, honor, and redemption…

Thus Jerusalem was occupied more than once and liberated anew. If we speak about the Islamic period, we are speaking about Omar [ibn Al-Khattib’s] (i.e., one of the companions of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad) conquest of Jerusalem, which was in year 15 of the Hijri [Muslim calendar], 636 or 637 CE, and we are speaking about its renewed occupation by the Crusaders… Afterwards it was liberated by Saladin (i.e., Muslim leader), and Jerusalem will certainly be liberated and return to the embrace of Islam, noble and strong with its holy sites and its people, and the evil will pass, Almighty Allah willing.”

Muhammad Hussein also serves as Deputy Secretary-General and acting Secretary-General of the PLO Popular National Conference of Jerusalem.

Saladin - Muslim leader and Sultan of Egypt and Syria who defeated the Christian crusaders and conquered Jerusalem in 1187. The Battle of Hattin (July 1187) took place in the Lower Galilee in what is today Israel and paved the way for Saladin’s reconquest of Jerusalem (October 1187).
