“Regional and colonialist powers” may have been behind clashes between Egyptian football team supporters
Following clashes between Egyptian football team supporters in February 2012, which led to the death of more than 70 people:
"Deputy Chairman of the Olympic Committee, [Walid] Ayoub, expressed profound sorrow over what happened at Port Said. He said, 'I believe that the matter is not related to sports.' He noted that the matter has many dimensions, and that regional and colonialist powers may be behind it, their aim being to harm the security of the Arab Republic of Egypt."
