PA TV film: Israel sought to destroy Al-Aqsa Mosque to build “the alleged Temple”
In September 1996, Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu opened a tunnel near the Temple Mount to ease access to and from the Western Wall. Arafat called for Palestinians to protest violently and Palestinian-Israeli fighting went on for 3 days.
The film The Revolution Will Go On produced by the Fatah Council in Gaza was broadcast as part of the celebrations of Fatah’s 48th anniversary. The film described the events as follows:
“The ‘Tunnel Uprising’ [in September 1996] was in reaction to the occupation’s planning to harm the Al-Aqsa Mosque’s foundations so as to destroy it and build the alleged Temple. Our Palestinian people rose up to protect its holy places and some were killed or wounded [so severely that they] were disabled. The [PA] national security personnel and security forces stood with their people, and many of them fell as Martyrs (Shahids).”
