PA official refers to Israel as the “areas occupied in 1948”

“Head of the Statistics Department in the Ministry of Prisoners' Affairs, Abd Al-Nasser Farawneh… noted that the ‘veteran prisoners’ list includes prisoners from all Palestinian areas, as it includes 26 prisoners from the [West] Bank, 14 from areas occupied in 1948 (i.e., Israel), 9 prisoners from Jerusalem, and 3 prisoners from the Gaza Strip. Prisoner Karim Younes from the areas occupied in 1948, who has been imprisoned since January 6, 1983, is the most veteran prisoner.”

Note: Karim Younes – an Israeli Arab serving a 40-year sentence for kidnapping and killing an Israeli soldier in 1980. Originally sentenced to life in prison, but Israeli President Shimon Peres reduced his sentence in 2012.
