Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms expresses concern over journalist arrests
“The Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedoms, MADA, expressed its concern and worry in view of violations against journalists that were recorded in PA areas, in Gaza and in the [West] Bank.
This was said in its monthly report, which included violations recorded by the center during the past November [2013]…
The report said that the Palestinian investigation department in Salfit arrested director of the Voice of Tomorrowradio station, Majdi Taha, on Friday, Nov. 1, 2013, for his report on the disappearance of a young girl from the village of Biddya. In addition, on Sunday evening, Nov. 10, 2013, the Bethlehem police arrested director of Radio Bethlehem 2000, George Qanawati, in his home, for [material broadcasted on] his weekly radio program Peace, Land.
Internal Security personnel in the Gaza Strip arrested French agency photographer Yahya Hassouna on Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, while he was preparing a report on the ninth anniversary of President Yasser Arafat’s death.
In addition, on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, Presidential Guard Intelligence Service personnel arrested the Wattan TV crew, including 26-year-old reporter Ibrahim Anqawi and 33-year-old photographer Nael Al-Rajoub, while they were preparing a report on front organizations near the Muqata’a (the PA's Presidential Headquarters) in the city of Ramallah.
In addition, Preventive Security Forces in the city of Tulkarem summoned Wattan TV reporter Sami Al-Sa’i on Wednesday, Nov. 13, 2013.”
