Former Arafat advisor accuses Israel of committing Sabra and Shatila massacre, bombing US embassy in Beirut, and killing John Kennedy
Official PA TV program Memory of the Homeland interviewed former advisor to Yasser Arafat Bassam Abu Sharif.
Abu Sharif explains that the reason former Israeli PM Ariel Sharon carried out the Sabra and Shatila massacre was his concern over the high number of Israeli Defense Forces’ casualties in Operation Peace for Galilee (1982). The aim of the massacre was to increase the number of Palestinian casualties, he claimed. Abu Sharif also said that Philip Habib, chief mediator for the US in the Middle East (1976-1978), told him in a meeting in Paris that Robert Ames, the CIA station chief in Beirut, had sent a report directly to President Reagan, in which he recommended a peace agreement between Israel and the Arabs based on the land-for-peace principle, and that Israel, in revenge, blew up the American embassy in Beirut, killing the CIA personnel.
Bassam Abu Sharif: “Reagan’s wife and the head of the CIA in the Middle East agreed that he would send his reports directly to the White House, contrary to usual practice, according to which the CIA sent its reports to the State Department… and one of the documents sent directly to the White House was a peace initiative, entitled ‘Land for Peace’, which Reagan proclaimed… And [Habib] told me: ‘This is the reason Israel took revenge on Bob Ames and the CIA representatives in the Middle East, by blowing them up in the American embassy in Beirut…’
John Kennedy was killed in accordance with an Israeli decision, because he refused to supply the [Israeli] nuclear power plant in Dimona with equipment that would make it possible to build nuclear missiles, unless the US monitored the reactor.”
Note: Sabra and Shatila are Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon. In 1982, during the first Lebanon War, Muslim residents of the camps were massacred by Christian Phalangists. The PA has a longstanding policy of falsely accusing Israel of committing the massacre or actively helping to carry it out.
The bombing of the US embassy in Beirut in 1983 was a terror attack perpetrated by a Hezbollah suicide bomber. The bomber rammed a pickup truck loaded with explosives into the embassy, killing 63 people.
