Official PA daily: U.S. pursues "goal of fragmenting the countries of the region, in keeping with [their] plan for a new Middle East"
Op-ed by Omar Hilmi Al-Ghoul, regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida
"Relations between the US and Saudi Arabia have cooled somewhat in recent years as a result of the Obama administration’s treatment of regional issues, especially the Iranian and Syrian issue: Saudi Arabia has openly expressed its reservations about the US’ careless handling of the issue of the political settlement between the Palestinians and Israel. In addition, the Saudi leadership has expressed dissatisfaction at the weakening of its role in the region, with Qatar’s role being emphasized at its expense; and as if that weren’t enough, the US-supported Qatar forged an alliance with the Muslim Brotherhood and gave them a free hand to wreak ruin and destruction in Saudi territory, the Gulf states and the entire Arab world.
[The US achieved] this through [a policy of] ignoring the Houthis (Yemeni Shia insurgents) and their ally, Iran, or through a tacit agreement between them – in order to fulfill the goal of fragmenting the countries of the region, in keeping with [their] plan for a new Middle East.”
