PA official calls for cooperation with Hamas and the Islamic Jihad Movement
“As part of a research project, [PA] chief negotiator Saeb Erekat recommended calling for the convening of the National Council as soon as possible, with the participation of Hamas and the Islamic Jihad Movement, and recommended electing a new Executive Committee to serve as the ‘temporary government of the State of Palestine,’ in accordance with the UN decision to recognize the state.
The recommendation was part of a study entitled ‘How to Deal with the US Proposals.’ Erekat proposed [holding] the National Council’s session in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
The study also recommended informing the members of the ‘Quartet for Peace’ (i.e., the Quartet on the Middle East) that it would not be possible to extend the negotiations beyond the nine month period, and also recommended renewing joint activities with the ‘peace camp’ in Israel."
