PA Ministry of Prisoners’ Affairs: 7,000 Palestinians in Israeli prisons, 477 serving life sentences
“The Ministry of Prisoners’ Affairs said yesterday [Aug. 26, 2014] that the number of Palestinian prisoners and detainees in the occupation prisons has reached 7,000… The Ministry’s statement clarified that 60 of the prisoners had been released as part of the deal for the captured Israeli soldier, Gilad Shalit… 477 prisoners are serving life sentences.”
Note: In October 2011, the Israeli government agreed to release 1,027 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli prison in exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, who had been held hostage by Hamas for more than 5 years. Dozens of the terrorists released in that deal were rearrested in June 2014, following the abduction of Israeli teens Eyal Yifrach, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Frenkel, 16.
