Abbas’ advisor: The Balfour Declaration was a “historic mistake”
“Prominent Palestinian leaders, individuals, factions and institutions welcomed today the decision of the British House of Commons to recognize the State of Palestine… Mahmoud Al-Habbash, the Supreme Shari’ah Judge and Mahmoud Abbas’ Advisor on Religious and Islamic Affairs, said that [with its decision] today, Britain was correcting, even if only symbolically, the historic mistake it committed against the Palestinian people in 1917, almost 100 years ago, by means of the Balfour Declaration, which called for the establishment of a national home for the Jews on the land of Palestine.”
Note: The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and is seen as the basis for later international commitments to establish the State of Israel.
