PA daily op-ed blames Britain and the League of Nations for “the ominous Balfour Promise”
Op-ed by Khaldoun Al-Barghouti, regular columnist for Al-Hayat Al-Jadida:
“While the Balfour Promise (i.e., Declaration) laid the cornerstone of the Zionist plan to occupy Palestine, it was the White Paper of Sept. 11, 1922 (sic. – should be June 3) that formulated the practical steps for the implementation of the Zionist plan… The marking of the anniversary of the ominous Balfour Promise while laying the blame on Britain alone, without drawing the world’s attention to the role played by the League of Nations in its [the Balfour Declaration’s] realization by means of the Mandate’s charter, amounts to a letter of indulgence to the League of Nations for its crime against us, and for the UN’s crime in its partition decision and afterwards.”
Note: The Balfour Declaration of Nov. 2, 1917 was a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Baron Rothschild stating that “His Majesty's government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people” and is seen as the basis for later international commitments to establish the State of Israel.
