Boys' elementary school named after Al-Qaeda co-founder
Headline: “Jenin: Festival to mark Land Day at the Abdullah Azzam School for Boys”
“Martyr (Shahid) Abdullah Azzam (i.e., Palestinian co-founder of Al-Qaeda) Elementary School for Boys held a sports and arts festival under the title ‘Homeland,’ under the auspices of [Jenin] District Governor Ibrahim Ramadan and Jenin’s Education Department Director Salam Al-Taher for the eternal Land Day.”
Land Day – an annual commemoration of the general strike and demonstrations organized by Israeli Arab residents of the Galilee on March 30, 1976 to protest the Israeli government's decision to expropriate land in the Galilee for security and settlement purposes, which it later implemented. During the protests, demonstrators burnt tires, blocked roads, and threw rocks and firebombs. Six demonstrators were shot and killed by the Israeli army and police. Israeli Arabs and Palestinians consider Land Day a national day.
Abdullah Azzam - Palestinian co-founder of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization and the Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist organization in Pakistan. Azzam was a proponent of global Jihad and the establishment of an Islamic state. Azzam fled the West Bank in 1967 and reached Saudi Arabia in the 1970s, where he taught Osama bin Laden at King Abdul Aziz University. In 1979 Azzam moved to northern Pakistan where he took an active role leading the fight against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, enlisting bin Laden in the effort as well. Azzam intended to attack Israel and Europe after the Soviet-Afghan War. It remains unclear who was responsible for Azzam's assassination with a bomb in Peshawar, Pakistan, on Nov. 24, 1989.
