As Pope recognizes "Palestine,"
PMW reveals continued PA terror glorification

Headline: Consternation as Pope calls Abbas "angel of peace"

Sub-headline: The Pope's description of Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas as an "angel of peace" is confounded by his own faction's association with terrorism.

Recent remarks made by Pope Francis that Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas is an "angel of peace" have caused consternation among many observers of the long-running conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Former Italian MP and activist Fiamma Nirenstein said on Monday that her impression of Mr. Abbas was that he continually put obstacles in the way of peace and ceaselessly participated in incitement against Israel.

Watchdog Group Palestinian Media Watch has also documented voluminous evidence that Abbas and his Fatah faction glorify terrorism as a matter of course.

Just last week, the group highlighted a case in which a member of Fatah's Central Committee made the following remarks about a terrorist who orchestrated the deaths of 125 people: "He had a talent for persuading young people to die as Martyrs".

Analysts said it was not clear how such statements could be seen as compatible with a genuine commitment to peace.
