Official PA daily: Israel foresaw humanitarian crisis in Gaza Strip and therefore gave it to Hamas

Op-ed by Yahya Rabah, columnist for the official PA daily and a member of the Fatah Leadership Committee in Gaza
“Israel in its current situation cannot continue the game it entered with Hamas, and therefore the Israeli journalism has begun to publish in the name of international sources things already known for 30 years, and presents them as if they are fresh merchandise, regarding the declining situation in the Gaza Strip, according to which in a number of years the Gaza Strip will not be fit to live in! These are things that the first to say them was Israel itself in 1985, when it asked its research centers to provide the government with scenarios regarding the Gaza Strip. The research centers at the time emphasized that the situation will become very urgent between 2015 and 2020, and that in order for the Gaza Strip not to explode in their faces, the best thing would be to give it to the Muslim Brotherhood, who are now called Hamas. The Gaza Strip was given from Israel to Hamas by [former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel] Sharon in 2005, and Hamas agreed to enter the tragic game that is the 2007 rift (between Hamas and Fatah that occurred when Hamas took over the Gaza Strip. See below –Ed.).”

2007 Hamas takeover of the Gaza Strip - Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah won the 2005 Palestinian Authority Presidential election. However, Hamas won the 2006 parliamentary elections in both the Gaza Strip and West Bank, with a majority of 74 out of 132 seats, to Fatah’s 45 seats. Fatah’s rule of the PA Presidency and Hamas’ rule of the PA government led to friction and eventually armed conflict between Hamas and Fatah. Hamas defeated Fatah militarily in the Gaza Strip in 2007, and since then Hamas rules in Gaza while the PA continues to rule the West Bank under Fatah.
