Official PA daily claims Palestinian heritage is "thousands of years old"
Headline: “In the name of the oath in the shadow of the flag”
Op-ed by Muwaffaq Matar, Fatah Revolutionary Council member and regular columnist for the official PA daily
“The Palestinian Fida'i’s (self-sacrificing fighter’s) keffiyeh (Arab headdress) came before the appearance of the Palestinian flag as the symbol of the Palestinian fighting for freedom, despite the leadership of the Palestinian revolution’s insistence on the presence of the Palestinian flag as a symbol of the homeland, in other words a symbol of a people with a land and a state. The symbolism of the keffiyeh is not confined only to the period since the outbreak of the Palestinian revolution, but rather it has historical symbolism, being the headdress of the first men of Palestine, who emerged from the womb of the holy land of Palestine from the dawn of human history. Therefore, we are interested in the symbol of the state – the flag – as a means to stop the expansion of the Zionist occupation and settlement project on our land, and we are also interested in the Canaanite keffiyeh as a heritage that is thousands of years old, in order to maintain one of the examples of our historical and natural right to our land, Palestine.”
