The Norwegian city of Stavanger should cut ties with its sister city of Nablus, Stavanger city council member Mats Danielsson has proposed. Danielsson made his proposal after Palestinian Media Watch reported in August that the Palestinian Authority had dedicated another square in Nablus to the memory of a terrorist responsible for the murders of civilians.
According to Palestinian Media Watch, the square is named after terrorist Naif Abu Sharakh, who was responsible for numerous terrorist attacks against Israelis, including a double suicide bombing in Tel Aviv on Jan. 5, 2003, in which 23 people were killed and dozens injured. He was the Nablus commander of Fatah's military wing, the terrorist Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, and was killed by the Israeli army on June 26, 2004.
Furthermore, according to Palestinian Media Watch, in March this year the governor of Nablus publicly honored terrorist Dalal Mughrabi, who led the killings of 37 civilians, among them 12 children, as "a model on our nation's path," and in April the Nablus district held a ceremony honoring the families of the murderers of dozens of Israelis. In April and May, the city's Education Ministry posted multiple maps that erase Israel, covering it and the PA areas with the Palestinian flag. At a summer camp in Nablus, children carried rifles and wore military uniforms, and the governor of Nablus spoke at the camp's closing ceremony in June.
"Our sister cities should share our values, norms and traditions. This is proof of the opposite. Our sister city Nablus honors terrorists," Danielsson told Norwegian newspaper Rogalands Avis in August.
If this proposal is accepted, it will be the first of its kind in Europe, particularly in Scandinavia, where the PA's celebration of terrorist martyrs usually bothers no one. As the practice is not reported in European media, most Europeans are not aware of it either.
